In the recent years, the high strength concrete has increasingly been used according to extending market of tall buildings. However, Ministry of Land, transport and Maritime Affairs was established by law with an alternative plan after June 2008 because of the weakness of high strength concrete accompanied spalling phenomena in fire. The mix design of concrete has to properly meet standards which are the spalling resistance of concrete and limited temperature of steel reinforcement. The fire proof concrete mixed fiber has widely been used to meet spalling safety on the many construction sites, the most researches about the fire proof concrete mixed fiber had being carried out focused on fire resistance, compressive strength and cast in place of concrete. But the most important thing is column shortening used the fire proof concrete within the vertical members. In this paper, the fire proof concrete filled spalling safety standards was experimented by required material when the column shortening is revised between normal concrete and fire proof concrete mixed fiber and then the results have done a comparative analysis. Also, The paper aimed to indicate a basic data for revision of column shortening of fire proof concrete.

With the recent emergence of high rise buildings, this study was conducted in order to examine shortening, which has been used only in civil engineering structures, in such buildings. Examination of the shortening of vertical members is basically focused on deformations caused by load applied to concrete, material characteristics, etc. Shortening is analyzed through calculating parameters from the factors or characteristics of concrete, but analysis in the aspect of material tests has been somewhat unsatisfactory. Thus, this study purposed to analyze basic material test items for correcting the shortening of vertical members, namely, columns, to determine the reliability of material tests before parameter calculation for correcting shortening, and to examine the performance of material tests.

This study presents the optimal grouping technique of columns which groups together columns of similar shortening trends to improve the efficiency of column shortening compensation. Here, Kohonen's self-organizing feature map which can classify patterns of input data by itself with unsupervised learning was used as the optimal grouping algorithm. The Kohonen network applied in this study is composed of two input neurons and variable output neurons, here the number of output neuron is equal to the column groups to be classified. In input neurons the normalized mean and standard deviation of shortening of each columns are inputted and in the output neurons the classified column groups are presented. The applicability of the proposed algorithm was evaluated by applying it to the two buildings where column shortening analyses had already been performed. The proposed algorithm was able to classify columns with similar shortening trends as one group, and from this we were able to ascertain the field-applicability of the proposed algorithm as the optimal grouping of column shortening.

PURPOSE: This study examined the relationship between lumbar instability and shortening of the iliopsoas muscles in patients with chronic low back pain. METHODS: Forty-nine patients with chronic low back pain participated in this study. The modified Thomas test was used to examine the shortening state of the iliopsoas muscle. The length of the iliopsoas muscle was measured using the hip flexion angle, and those with a flexion angle of 10° or more were classified as positive. Five subtests were used for the lumbar instability test: testing for prone lumbar instability, passive lumbar extension, anterior-posterior mobility, passive straight leg raise, and age. Those who tested positive for at least three of these tests were classified as positive for the lumbar segment instability test. RESULTS: There was a significant association between the results of the lumbar instability test and the shortening of the iliopsoas test (p < .05). After analyzing the association between the iliopsoas length test and the five lumbar instability subtests, the results of the prone lumbar instability test (p < .001) and the anterior-posterior mobility test (p < .05) showed a significant association with the iliopsoas length test. CONCLUSION: The association between lumbar instability and shortening of the iliopsoas muscles was examined in 49 patients with chronic low back pain. Patients with shortened iliopsoas muscles tested positive in the lumbar instability tests more often. Hence, the length test of the iliopsoas muscle can be used to determine lumbar instability in patients with chronic low back pain.

The objectives of this paper are to estimate differential column Shortening and to determine appropreate compensation amount in 52 story Amatapura Apartment in Indonesia. for this, a computer program based on PCA and CEB-FIP code is developed. The results show that Elastic and Creep strain are the main factors of column shortening and the maximum differential shortening is appeared near the middle of the building height. The results between field survey and estimation have some difference, the most influential factor of the difference can be lateral restraints provided by horizontal members, which cannot be handled in this developed program. Hence introducing the modification factors from various field survey, this program can be used properly in design and construction procedures.

This study presents optimal compensation algorithm of differential column shortening for more than two column groups. The proposed algorithm produces the minimum story groups and their compensation thicknesses which satisfy constraint conditions on performance and construction and enables not only the relative compensation but also the mixed compensation considering absolute shortening. The simulated annealing algorithm is used as the main optimization technique. The applicability of the proposed algorithm was verified by applying it to the 61-storey building where compensation of differential column shortening had already been performed. Using, the proposed algorithm compensation was performed easily and the number of compensation was less than the field method.
The principal objective of this study was to assess the effects of various ratios of sesame oil to shortening on the characteristics and stability of lipids in Yackwa. The sesame oil to shortening ratios assessed herein were 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, and 1:100. The lipid contents of Yackwa prepared with various shortening ratios ranged from 25.20 to 29.12%. The lipids in these Yackwa consisted primarily of the frying oil (soybean oil), and the oil contents were measured between 84-90%. The fatty acid compositions of the lipids in the Yackwa were unrelated to the ratio of shortening. The fatty acid compositions were as follows: linoleic acid 49.1-51.27%, oleic acid 26.05-26.77%, palmitic acid 10.07-11.71%, linolenic acid 5.51-5.72% and stearic acid 4.51-4.68%. These compositions were similar to that of soybean oil, which was the frying oil used to prepare the Yackwa. The acid value, peroxide value, and carbonyl value of the lipids in Yackwa did not differ with the various shortening ratios used during the storage time. Stability of lipids in Yackwa were mainly effected by frying oil. Our results suggest that shortening should prove useful as a substitute for sesame oil in the preparation of Yackwa.
In this study, changes in total trans fatty acid (tFA) and fat contents were determined in soybean oil, shortening, and olive oil after potato sticks were fried 30 consecutive times, respectively. Prior to frying, the potato sticks contained 3.8% fat, with 43.2% tFAs, After the first frying in soybean oil, the total tFA content of the potato sticks sharply decreased to 3.2%, and then it gradually increased to 8.1 % after 30 consecutive times of frying. However, the total fat content of the potato sticks, fried in soybean oil increased to 15.2% after the first frying and thereafter it decreased to 9.75% with 30 repeated episodes of frying. When the potato sticks were fried in olive oil, similar changes in tFA and fat contents were shown; while such changes were not observed when shortening was used. After 30 consecutive frying events, the tFA contents in the soybean oil and olive oil increased to 4.15 and 5.75%, respectively; however, such an increase was not observed in the shortening. One can assume that most of the tFAs in the fried oils were from the potato sticks, which contained relatively high tFA content during the repeated deep-frying process.
The signification of calorie/water (C/W) ratio was investigated in the treatment of highly concentrated organic wastes by thermophilic oxic process (TOP). Swine waste was used in this study. When C/W ratio was 1.6, most of swine waste was decomposed and all water was evaporated in the 24-h injection cycle. To improve treatment efficiency of TOP treating swine waste, the effect of shortening the swine waste injection cycle was examined. The shortening of injection cycle was conducted to stimulate the activity of thermophilic bacteria. A high temperature in the reactor was maintained by shortening of the injection cycle. When the swine waste injection cycle was shortened, the C/W ratio was fixed at 1.6. As a result, by shortening the swine waste injection cycle from 24-h to 12 and 6-h, the maximum loading rate of swine waste per day could be improved 1.9 and 3.5 times, respectively.
In the preliminary design stage of an RC 3D-frame, repeated sequential analyses to determine optimal members' sizes and the investigation of the parameters required to minimize the differential column shortening are computational effort consuming, especially when considering various types of loads such as dead load, temperature action, time dependent effects, construction and live loads. Because the desired accuracy at this stage does not justify such luxury, two backpropagation feedforward artificial neural networks have been proposed in order to approximate this information. Instead of using a commercial software package, many references providing advanced principles have been considered to code a program and generate these neural networks. The first one predicts the typical amount of time between two phases, needed to achieve the minimum maximorum differential column shortening. The other network aims to prognosticate sequential analysis results from those of the simultaneous analysis. After the training stages, testing procedures have been carried out in order to ensure the generalization ability of these respective systems. Numerical cases are studied in order to find out how good these ANN match with the sequential finite element analysis. Comparison reveals an acceptable fit, enabling these systems to be safely used in the preliminary design stage.
