The aim of this research was to manufacture sludge-particle board using paper sludge with wood particle and to investigate physical and mechanical properties of various sludge-particle boards, fabricated with ratios of sludge to particle of 10 to 90, 20 to 80, 30 to 70, 40 to 60 and 50 to 50(oven dry weight based). Sludge-particle boards were manufactured by urea-formaldehyde resin, 0.8 target specific gravity, and 10mm thickness. It was possible to manufacture sludge-particle board as the same processing in the present particleboard manufacturing system. This sludge-particle board have different properties as composition ratios of sludge and particle. And sludge-particle board made from 10 percent to 20 percent of sludge mixing ratio have similar mechanical properties compared with control particleboard. Especially, the sludge-particle board made from 10 percent to 40 percent mixing ratios of sludge have superior to control particleboard in internal bond, screw withdrawal holding strength and modulus of elasticity. In the case of dimensional stability, water absorption was increased and thickness swelling was decreased as increased with sludge mixing proportion. The sludge-particle board made of different mixing ratios of our laboratory design was able to concluded that there is possibility of partial substitution of wood particle materials.

The purpose of this study is the development of the simple and precise sampling and analysis method of methyl isocyanate(MIC) in the work place as their secondary aliphatic amine derivatives by gas chromatography with flame ionization detector. The urea derivatives are quantitatively and simultaneously derived from MIC with secondary aliphatic amines such as dipropylamine(DPA), dibutylamine(DBA), and dipentylamine (DAA) in methylene chloride. The method is based on sampling glass tube in XAD-2 resin which is coated with secondary aliphatic amines. The samples are desorbed by $2m{\ell}$ methylene chloride and analysed using gas chromatography with flame ionization detector(GC/FID). In the results, the detection limit of the overall procedure and reliable quantity are $0.020-0.027{\mu}g$($1.347-1.740{\mu}g/m^3$(0.529-0.684 ppb) based on a 15 L air volume) MIC per sample. The average desorption efficiencies are 97.96 - 101.23 %. The results of versus storage time are high and stable recovery rates.

Polyurethane-ureas(PUUs) were prepared from 4,4'-methylenebis(cyclohexyl isocyanate) and various diols including isosorbide. Isosorbide is starch-derived monomer that exhibit a wide range of glass transition temperature and are therefore able to be used in many applications. PUU was synthesized by a pre-polymer polymerization using a catalyst. Successful synthesis of the PUU was characterized by fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy. Thermal properties were determined by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and dynamic mechanical analysis. It was found that by tuning isosorbide content in the resin, their glass transition temperature(Tg) slightly decreased. Physical properties were also determined by tensile strength and X-ray diffraction. There is no significant differences between petroleum-derived diol and isosorbide in XRD analysis. Moreover, their physical and optical properties were determined. The result showed that the poly(tetramethylene ether glycol)/isosorbide-based PUU exhibited enhanced tensile strength, transmittance, transparency and biodegradability compared to the existing diols. After 11 weeks composting, the biodegradability of blends increased in ISB-PUU. The morphology of the fractured surface of blend films were investigated by scanning electron microscopy.

In this study, reaction mechanism and curing characteristics of adhesives formulated with NaOH- and $H_2SO_4$-hydrolyzed chicken feather (CF) and formaldehyde-based crosslinkers were investigated by FT-IR and DSC. In addition, adhesive properties and formaldehyde emission of medium-density fiberboards (MDF) applied with the adhesives were measured. CF-based adhesives having a solid content of 40% and over were very viscous at $25^{\circ}C$, but the viscosity reduced to $300{\sim}660m{\cdot}Pa{\cdot}s$ at $50^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the adhesives could be used as a sprayable resin. Through the FT-IR spectra of liquid and cured CF-based adhesives, addition reaction of methylol group and condensation reaction between the functional groups with the use of formaldehyde-based crosslinkers were identified. From the analysis of DSC, it was elucidated for CF-based adhesives to require a higher pressing temperature or longer pressing time comparing to commercial urea-formaldehyde (C-UF) resin. MDF bonded with CF-based adhesives, which was formulated with 5% NaOH-hydrolyzed CF (CF-AK-5%) and PF of formaldehyde to phenol mole ratio of 2.5 (PF-2.5), and pressed for 8 min had higher MOR and IB than those with other CF-based adhesives. MOR and IB of MDF bonded with the CF-based adhesives regardless of formulation type and pressing time were higher than those with C-UF resin. When the values compared with the minimum requirements of KS standard, IB exceeded the KS standard in all formulations and pressing time, but MOR of only MDF bonded with CF-AK-5% and PF-2.5 and pressed for 8 min satisfied the KS standard. What was worse, 24-TS of MDF bonded with all CF-based adhesives did not satisfied the KS standard. However, MOR and 24-TS can be improved by increasing the target density of MDF or the amount of wax emulsion, which is added to improve the water resistance of MDF. Importantly, the use of CF-based adhesives decreased greatly the formaldehyde emission. Based on the results, we reached the conclusion that CF-based adhesives formulated under proper conditions had a potential as a sprayable resin for the production of wood panels.

Field experiment was conducted on a sandy clay loam paddy field in the Experimental Farm of the Kangwon National University for four years from 1995 to 1998 to evaluate the effect of different nitrogen fertilizers on soil property and rice yield. The size of each experimental plot was 75 m2. Basal application of fertilizer to the paddy field was on late April, and rice (cv. Odae) was sown with drill seeding on early May. Irrigation was done at 3 leaf stages after rice seeding. Electrical conductivity in soils treated with phosphate- and resin coated slow release fertilizers were relatively greater than those of the other fertilizer application. Available $P_2O_5$ concentration in soils after rice harvest increased significantly compared that in soil before field trial. Rice yield in transplanting culture were $6.516kg\;ha^{-1}$. The rice yield in the direct seeded paddy was 81.9 percents of the yield in the transplanted paddy. The rice yield in phosphate coated slow release fertilizer was the highest among various fertilizer trials in directly seeded dry paddy, while rice yield was the lowest in the organic fertilizer plus urea application. Rice yield between organic fertilizer plus urea and organic fertilizer application were not significantly different. The green manuring effect of rye in the direct seeded rice paddy in Chuncheon was low due to low temperature and short growth period.

In this study, eco-friendly hybrid composite boards were manufactured from green tea, 3 kinds of charcoals and wood fiber for developing interior materials to reinforce the strength performances and the functionalities in addition to performances of the hybrid composite boards composed of green tea and wood fiber. The effects for the kind and the component ratio of raw materials on dynamic MOE (modulus of elasticity) were investigated, and static bending strength performances were nondestructively estimated. Dynamic MOEs were highest in the hybrid composite boards composed of green tea, fine charcoal and wood fiber on the whole. However, the difference caused by the kind of charcoals was small. These values decreased with increasing component ratios of green tea and charcoals. The hybrid composite boards using $E_1$ grade urea resin had the higher values than those using $E_0$ grade urea resin, however the difference between them markedly decreased than that of hybrid composite board composed of green tea and wood fiber, and it was found that these values were markedly improved than those of the hybrid composite boards composed of green tea and wood fiber. There were mostly high correlations with significance at 1% level between dynamic MOEs and static bending strength performances, and this means that the static bending strength performances can be estimated from dynamic MOE.

1. Various gluing qualities applying Resorcinol Plyophen #6000 were studied on aiming the strength relationships of laminated woods resulted by single species [poplar (Populus deltoides), larch(Larix leptolepis)], mixed species of (poplar and larch), preservatives, treated poplar the scarf joint with mixed species of poplar and larch and the scarf joint treated with preservatives. 1. 1 On the block shear and on the DVL tension test, the mean wood failure ratio showed an excellent value i.e., above 65% and the tangential strength for larch was higher than that of radial, but it was reversed for poplar as shown in Tables 1 and 2. 1. 2 The lamina treated with Na-PCP reduced slightly the strength but the limited strength allowed for manufacturing laminated wood was not influenced by treating Na-PCP as shown in Tables 3 and 4. 1. 3 The safe scarf ratio in the plane scarf joint was above 1/12 for larch and 1/6 for poplar regard less of the chemical treatment or untreatment as shown in Tables. 5, 6, 7 and 8. 2. In the normal and boiled state, the gluing quality of the laminated wood composed of single[poplar (Populus deltoides), larch (Larix leptolepis)] and double species (poplar and larch) glued with Resorcinol Plyophen #6000 were measured as follow, and also represented the delamination of the same laminated wood. 2.1 The normal block shear strength of the straight and curved laminated wood (in life size) were more than three times of the standards adhesion strength. And, the value of the boiled stock was decreased to one half of the standard shear adhesion strength, but it was more than twice the standard strength for the boiled stock. Thus, it was recognized that the water resistance of the Resorcinol Plyophen #6000 was very high as shown in Tables 9 and 10. 2. 2 The delamination ratio of the straight and curved laminated woods in respect of their composition were decraesed, in turn, in the following order i. e., larch, mixed stock (larch+poplar) and poplar. The maximum value represented by the larch was 3.5% but it was below the limited value as shown in Table 11. 3. The various strengthes i.e., compressive, bending and adhesion obtainted by the straight laminaced wood which were constructed by five plies of single and double species of lamina i. e., larch (Larix leptolepis) and poplar (Populus euramericana), glued with urea resin were shown as follows: 3. 1 If desired a higher strength of architectural laminated wood composed of poplar (P) and larch (L), the combination of the laminas should be arranged as follows, L+P+L+P+L as shown in Table 12. 3.2 The strength of laminated wood composed of laminas which included pith and knots was conside rably decreased than that of clear lamina as shown Table 13. 3.3 The shear strength of the FPL block of the straight laminated wood constructed by the same species which were glued with urea adhesives was more than twice the limited adhesion strength, thus it makes possible to use it for interior constructional stock.
This study was to manufacture thinned wood of Larix leptolepis Gordon into Oriented Strand Board(OSB) with Urea-Formaldehyde Resin. The OSB was made of four kinds of strand in slenderness ratio 150 ; thickness $0.3{\pm}0.05mm$, $0.4{\pm}0.05mm$, $0.5{\pm}0.05mm$ and $0.6{\pm}0.05mm$, respectively length 45mm, 60mm, 75mm and 90mm. Target densities were 0.65gr/$cm^3$, 0.75gr/$cm^3$ and 0.85gr/$cm^3$. The stepwise 9 minutes-multi-pressing schedule in the maximum pressure 40kgf/$cm^2$, the minimum pressure 10kgf/$cm^2$ was applied for $400mm{\times}390mm{\times}12mm$ board at the temperature of $150^{\circ}C$ in a hot press. In MOR The OSB of thin strand thickness $0.3{\pm}0.05mm$(length 45mm) and density 0.85gr/$cm^3$ was the highest. The strand thickness had more effect on MOR than the strand length. In strand thickness $0.4{\pm}0.05mm$(length 60mm) and density 0.85gr/$cm^3$ was the highest MOE. The strand thickness and length had adverse effects on MOE each other. At internal bonding. The OSB of strand thickness $0.3{\pm}0.05mm$(length 45mm) and board density 0.75gr/$cm^3$ showed the highest value. OSB had higher IB value with thinner strand thickness. The thinner strand thickness showed the lower thickness swelling in turn $0.3{\pm}0.05mm$(length 45mm), $0.4{\pm}0.05mm$(length 60mm), $0.5{\pm}0.05mm$(length 75mm). $0.6{\pm}0.05mm$(length 90mm). Target densities 0.75gr/$cm^3$ 0.65gr/$cm^3$, 0.85gr/$cm^3$ showed in turn lower value. Finally, The OSB made of thinned wood of Larix leptolepis Gordon showed good results in laboratory experiment.
This study discusses the feasibility of coffee bean residue as a raw material of medium-density fiberboard (MDF). In this relation, the effect of coffee bean residue known as an absorbent material on the physical and mechanical properties of MDF manufactured at its different addition level. Coffee bean residue which is a by-product of coffee mill and large amount of waste left over after processing for instant coffee was added at the level of 3, 6, and 9% on dry basis and urea formaldehyde resin was used as the adhesive. The MDF made with mixture of wood fiber and coffee bean residue was tested for physical and mechanical properties as well as formaldehyde emission. The bending strength and internal bonding strength of the MDF made with mixture of wood fiber-coffee bean residue were higher than that of the KS standard in randomized mat structure type, but not in layered mat structure type. Also, the physical properties of MDF made with mixture of wood fiber-coffee bean residue showed a considerable improvement in thickness swelling over the commercial MDF. More importantly, the formaldehyde emission rate of MDF made with mixture of wood fiber-coffee bean residue met the KS standard and was close to that of commercial MDF. These results showed the feasibility of coffee bean residue as a raw material for the production of environmentally-friendly MDF. Additional works on adhesive-coffee bean compatibility, improvement of moisture absorption effect and reduction the formaldehyde emission rate by carbonization of coffee bean residue may be required.

The aim of this study was to obtain information about two early-20th Century clothes, for which the "National Memorial Museum of Forced Mobilization under Japanese Occupation" has sought to receive preservation treatment. Optical microscopes and a scanning electron microscope were used to investigate the weaving of the clothes, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR) was used to investigate the fibers. Cloth A is believed to be a Japanese half sleeved inner wear(Hanjuban) used by women. Cloth B is believed to be working clothing that was checked by an Osaka plant. This was verified by a book written by the Japanese army. Both of the clothes were made mostly from cotton, although the inner wear also used viscose rayon on the neck collar. The button on the working wear was made of urea formaldehyde resin, an early precursor to plastic.
