The hydrologic model FESHM was introduced and its applicability was investigated in an attempt to analyze the rainfall-runoff relationships of urban small watersheds and to hereafter predict the envi-ronmental changes. Basic data on rainfall, water level, geomorphological characterisitics and land use were obtained from Yeonwha stream watershed located in Chonju-si Dukjin-dong. WL-5 for simulation o subshed WS# 1(136.7 ha) with urban district and WL-1 for total watershed WS#5 (278.78 ha) we'e selected as gaging points. The main results gained through applications were summarized as follows. 1. Direct runoff ratio caalculated from a simple separation method for WS#5 WS# 1 was 2O~39%, 38~62%, respectively. 2. Simulations for the runoff estimation were carried out for each watershed using 5 rainfall events, the simulation errors had the range of 2~ 30%, O~ 63% and O 120 minutes for the runoff volume, peak flow and peak time, respectively. 3. The effect of landuse change by urbanization was tested to WS# 1, runoff volume before development was estimated as from tenth to twentieth against after development.

This study is to assess the runoff characteristics of nonpoint source pollution loads for Jecheon and Jangpyeong stream watersheds located in the upstream of Chungju lake. The SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool), a physically based distributed hydrological model was calibrated and verified using 5 years (2006 to 2010) streamflow and water quality data. The Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency for streamflow was 0.60~0.92 and the determination coefficients for sediment, Total Nitrogen (T-N), and Total Phosphorous (T-P) were 0.53~0.71, 0.51~0.91 and 0.38~0.85 respectively. The results showed that the Sediment, T-N, and T-P of Jangpyeong stream were 40.0~60.9 %, 34.8~64.1 % and 76.5~83.9 % higher than Jecheon stream watershed during wet days. The results evaluated high NPS loads at Jangpyeong stream because the percentage of urban and upland crop cultivation area Jangpyeong stream watershed was higher than Jecheon stream watershed.
The SWAT(Soil and Water Assesment Tool) is a relatively large scale model for the complicated watershed or river basin. The model was developed to predict the effect of land management practices on water, sediment and agricultural chemical yields in large complex watershed with varying soils, land use and management conditions over long periods of time. Usually streams are divided into urban stream and natural stream in accordance with the development level. In case of urban stream, according to urbanization, as impermeable areas are increasing due to the change of land use condition and land cover condition, dry stream phenomenon at urban stream is rapidly progressed. In this study, long term run-off simulations in urban stream are performed by using SWAT model. Especially, the model is applied in small scale water shed, Joman River basin. The optimization by the sensitivity analysis is also performed for the model parameter estimations.
In this study, the coastal urban flood prediction and warning system based on HEC-RAS and SWMM were investigated to evaluate a watershed of On-Cheon stream in Busan which has characteristics of costal area cased by flooding of coastal urban areas. The basis of this study is a selection of various geological data from the numerical map that is a watershed of On-Cheon stream and computation of hydrologic GIS data. Thiessen method was used for analyzing of rainfall on the On-Cheon stream and 6th regression equation, which is Huff's Type II was time-distribution of rainfall. To evaluate the deployment of flood prediction and warning system, risk depth was used on the 3 selected areas. To find the threshold runoff for hydraulic analysis of stream, HEC-RAS was used and flood depth and threshold runoff was considered with the effect of tidal water level. To estimate urban flash flood trigger rainfall, PCSWMM 2002 was introduced for hydrologic analysis. Consequently, not only were the criteria of coastal urban flood prediction and warning system decided on the watershed of On-Cheon stream, but also the deployment flow charts of flood prediction and warning system and operation system was evaluated. This study indicates the criteria of flood prediction and warning system on the coastal areas and modeling methods with application of ArcView GIS, HEC-RAS and SWMM on the basin. For the future, flood prediction and warning system should be considered and developed to various basin cases to reduce natural flood disasters in coastal urban area.
An integration study of time-variable small watershed and stream models (USEPA's SWMM and WASP5) was performed for impact assessment of urbanization on water environment. The study area, the Kyoungan Stream, the tributary of Paldang Lake, was divided into 111 subbasins, based on the topographic condition, land use, and drainage system. RUNOFF block of SWMM was applied to estimate runoff flow and quality. EXTRAN block computed daily and hourly flow according to simulated runoff flow, water supply, and drainage data. SWMM was connected to WASP5 by transforming output file of SWMM into input file of WASP5. The nonpoint source loads and flow data of SWMM were imported to WASP5. The stream was divided into 45 segments based on the watershed delineation. The study included three water quality parameters, BOD, TN, and TP. The validate models were used to examine the impact of urbanization on stream flow and water quality.
Current urban stream conditions and their restoration projects were investigated by surveying the urban stream management experts in 29 cities with high population density (more than 1,000person/$km^{2}$). The survey results showed that the ratio of covered urban streams decreased by 1.4% (from 14% to 12.6%) in the last 5 years through steady river restoration projects promoted by governments. Nonetheless, 36.3% of 369 urban streams surveyed still report stream depletion problems; therefore, more efforts to alleviate the problems caused by distorted water circulation of urban streams are still necessary. Water depletion in many local urban streams, unlike national rivers, is accelerated due to negligence in stream management, budget shortage, and other reasons. To prevent stream depletion, the use of reclaimed water is suggested as one of the prevention plans. When available amounts of reused sewage are estimated through actual available nationwide sewage discharges of each watershed and instream flow of stream, annual instream flow supply of 780 million $m^{3}$ is expected; 4.8% reduction in the pollution load of public sewer treatment facilities is expected; and the creation of new value through water reuse service is expected. Thus, it is important for the reviews of feasibility and alternatives of water reuse projects for flow augmentation to consider not only investment budget reductions, but also environmental aspects. Also it is necessary to provide the financial support of unified government with strict water quality management policy.
The objective of this study was to analyze long term temporal trends of water chemistry and spatial heterogeneity for 83 sampling sites of Geum-River watershed using water quality dataset during 2003~2007 (obtained from the Ministry of Environment, Korea). The water quality, based on multi-parameters of temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids (SS), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and electric conductivity (EC), largely varied depending on the landuse patterns, years and seasons. The watershed was classified into three different landuse types: forest stream (Fo), agricultural stream (Ag), and urban stream (Ur). Largest seasonal variabilities in most parameters occurred during the two months of July to August and these were closely associated with large spate of summer monsoon rain. Conductivity, used as a key indicator for an ionic dilution during rainy season, and nutrients of TN and TP had inverse functions of precipitation. BOD, COD decrease during the rainy season. Minimum values in the conductivity, TN, and TP were observed during the summer monsoon, indicating an ionic and nutrient dilution of river water by the rainwater. In contrast, major inputs of suspended solids (SS) occurred during the period of summer monsoon. The landuse patterns analyses, based on the variables of BOD, COD, TN, TP and SS, showed that the values were greater in the agricultural stream (Ag) than in the forest stream (Fo) and urban stream (Ur) and that water quality was worst in the urban stream (Ur). The overall dataset suggest that efficient water quality management, especially in Gap-Stream and Miho-Stream, which showed worst water quality is required along with some of urban stream (Ur), based on the analysis of landuse patterns.
This study was conducted at 25 sites of 6 mainstreams and 19 tributaries sites within Heuck Stream watershed during May~October 2003 for the survey of fish distributions, compositions, and community characteristics. The survey showed that total fish was identified as 9 family and 26 species in all sites, and Cyprinidae dominated the community as 15 species. The dominant species of >20% of the total were Zacco temminckii (29%), Zacco platypus (22%), and Rhynchocypris oxycephalus (21%) in the watershed. Community analysis, based on the stream spatial gradients, indicated composition differences along the main axis of the stream from the headwater to the downstream; R. oxycephalus predominated in the most headwater zone and Z. temminckii dominated in the lower headwater zone, whereas Z. temminckii -Z. platypus dominated in the mid-to-downstream, and Z. platypus dominated the community in the most downstream zone. Total endemic species was 7 family and 15 species, which is made of 50% in the fish community, so that the high proportion of endemic species indicated a healthy region in terms of fish community, compared to average 23% in Korean peninsula in general. The total number and species of fish increased as the stream order (stream size) increased, indicating that impacts on chemical pollution or habitat disturbance were not so large to the fish community in this watershed. Trophic and tolerance guilds analysis showed that relative proportions of sensitive and insectivore species were >50% in the watershed and decreased as the stream order increased, whereas relative proportions of tolerant and omnivore species showed an opposite results. These outcomes suggest that the natural condition of watershed is preserved relatively and the region should be protected from the chemical and habitat disturbace by agricultural activity and urban developments.
Chonan and Asan city have been a focal point due to rapid development as the first station for Express Railroad and key cities West Coast Development Region. Gokgyo stream adjacent to the cities plays an important role as a drainage channel for an agriculture and a discharger of urban storm water. Waster quality of the stream has been deteriorating caused by pollution sources such as a untreated wastewater discharge and runoff from the watershed. In the study, we conducted 4 surveys in April, May, July, and September to understand the current state of water quality for the stream and to make it possibe to predict future water-quality variation for future development. The system runs on a personal computer under the windows enviroment and provides extensive graphic user interface(GUI) for user-friendly assessment. Using the pull-down menus provided by the GUI panel, the user is able to operate the system by pointing and clicking the icon to identify the state of water-quality at locations concerned. Furthermore, we developed an integrated watershed management system. The constructed system could be a useful tool as a decesion maker for pollution source control strategy.
Increased impervious surfaces alter stream hydrology resulting in lower flows during droughts and higher peak flows during floods. Not only urban area but also rural area has been expanded impervious surfaces because of increasing of greenhouses. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of the AnnAGNPS (Annualized Non-Point Source Pollution Model) on the surface runoff characteristics of the Daejeon-Stream watershed, and to predict the hydrological effects due to increasing of impervious surfaces. The model parameters were obtained from the geographical information system (GIS) databases, and additional parameters calibrated with the observed data. The model was calibrated by using 2004 of the runoff data and validated by using 2002 data obtained from WAMIS (Water Management Information System) to compare the simulated results for the study watershed. R2 values and efficiency index (EI) between observed and simulated runoff were 0.78 and 0.80, respectively at the calibration period. In this study, expanding of impervious surfaces such as greenhouses caused increasing of surface runoff, but caused decreasing of total nitrogen and total phosphorus loads.
