Ground subsidence in urban areas due to excessive development and degraded underground facilities is a serious problem. Geophysical surveys have been conducted to estimate the distribution and scale of cavities and subsidence. In this study, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) was performed near an area of road subsidence in an urban area. The subsidence arose due to groundwater leakage that carried soil into a neighboring excavation site. The ERT survey line was located between the main subsidence area and an excavation site. Because ERT data are affected by rapid topographic changes and surrounding structures, the influence of the excavation site on the data was analyzed through field-scale numerical modeling. The effect of an excavation should be considered when interpreting ERT data because it can lead to wrong anomalous results. A method for performing 2D inversion after correcting resistivity data for the effect of the excavation site was proposed. This method was initially tested using a field-scale numerical model that included the excavation site and subsurface anomaly, which was a loosened zone, and was then applied to field data. In addition, ERT data were interpreted using an existing in-house 3D algorithm, which considered the effect of excavation sites. The inversion results demonstrated that conductive anomalies in the loosened zone were greater compared to the inversion that did not consider the effects of excavation.
The primary purposes of this study are to suggest a medium-sized regeneration project which includes the excluded small sites near existing regeneration site, to identify urban improvement type which fits local conditions, and to suggest proper regeneration strategies for the improvement type. Main findings of this study are follows. First, the size of the living environment improvement project in urban area should be larger than 3ha and government's incentives are required for parcel merges to make the medium-size project site. Second, independent type of urban regeneration project should consider local characteristics while center-spread type of urban regeneration project should build a center by providing neighborhood facilities and proper housings. Third, urban regeneration project should be able to utilize local assets, such as cultural heritages, natural landscapes, transportation facilities. Fourth, standards for public support should be prepared to improve local competitiveness. Last, further studies are required for urban regeneration system improvement.
With the establishment of municipalities, public interest in small towns in Korea has been on the rise. To initiate an effective study and suggest subsequent policies for small towns, it is necessary to analyze and discuss substantive issues based on specific conditions of these small towns. The primary objective of this paper is to categorize small towns into types and to analyze the peculiarities and differences of their internal factors. The focus of this research is to determine the general characteristics of the classified towns and to suggest specific revitalization and specialized studies about them. In the main analysis of this paper, 39 small towns are divided into sets according to urban rank, conditions of location, and size of the population in the central site. Furthermore, distinctions of the divided towns are analyzed using three constituents for urban organization, including populations, activities, and facilities/land. From the research results, it was determined that there is a difference between small town types, according to population, land cost, and urban activities, based upon the urban rank and size of the population in the central site. Therefore, this paper concludes it is necessary to conduct further studies on time series analysis regarding the peculiarity changes of the types, and to complement the variables for future related studies.

The purpose of this study is to suggest some alternative on site planning of elementary school through investigating the effects of geographical and urban environment on the site. For this, we selected and surveyed 35 schools in Gwangju. The results of this study are as follows. 1) We cannot find out the differences from the use of elementary schools sites on slopes of sites. However, the sunken space between H type buildings in the site slopes facing east or west and the placing the playground on the north side of the site slopes facing north have some problems 2) The number of adjacent road and surrounding environment didn't show any effect. To separate between cars and pedestrians, we need some plans to block cars on the pedestrian gateway and it is much better to intensify the parking area near the school gate that cars come in and out. 3) The degree of satisfaction on the outdoor facilities of these cases shows low level. Therefore, to use the site of schools efficiently, we should secure the spacious playground and make plans to provide some spaces around school building for the static activities of students and teachers. 4) Most of all, the site which is suitable for educational environment should be selected. and also Special Code on the urban plan should be established to develop this one.

With recent growth of population and industry, urban development grows into grand scheme of excavation and construction in urban area. As the development progress advanced, the developments get large and deepen. With a progress of technology development in geotechnical engineering in Korea, most our grand scheme of projects follows great progress. On the other hand, some excavation in construction site caused direct or indirect event that affects the adjacent or surrounding structures by excavation from time to time. This event usually happens around residential and commercial area where underground tunnel, subway station, commercial building, and high-rises excavation site is, could lead great damage on economy as well as personal injury or human casualties. In order to prevent this event, the study has to be done with analysis on various events of excavation and its cause. In this paper, the research has collected the various excavation events and their causes to analyze on each site and event to define emphasis on surrounding environment.
This study is about heat island as one of the urban climate variation factors in urbanized modern society, which compared and observed the thermal characteristics both the downtown location and the outskirt site in summer. The diurnal air temperature range at each point is $12.6^{\circ}C$ in the downtown location and $14.3^{\circ}C$ in the outskirt site, so, it was found that the diurnal air temperature range in the outskirt site was $1.7^{\circ}C$ higher than in the downtown location. There was 20 minutes difference to reach the highest temperature between globe temperature and air temperature in the downtown location, however, the time spent to reach the highest temperature between globe temperature and air temperature in the outskirt site was the same. When we compared the globe temperature between the downtown location and outskirt site, we found that the temperature in the outskirt site was lower than in the downtown location after sunset due to the sudden temperature drops, although the exposed time to insolation in the outskirt site is longer. The average of globe temperature difference on the sample days was $1.1^{\circ}C$, the average of surface temperature difference on the sample days was $1.0^{\circ}C$, and the average of air temperature difference on the sample days was $2.0^{\circ}C$ Thus, it was found that the average of air temperature difference was higher than the average of globe temperature and the average of surface temperature. The result of this study is that the urban environment factors have more effect on the air temperature difference than globe temperature and surface temperature.

We examined three nature restoration projects in urban areas of Japan, China, and Korea. A prefectural park(29ha) has been under construction since 2005 on an abandoned industrial site in the southern part of Amagasaki City, Hyogo Prefecture, central Japan. Shanghai Central Park(28ha) was redeveloped in 2002 on a site that was formerly the old downtown in central Shanghai. Seoul Forest Park was developed as a large urban park(116ba) in 2005 in Seoul. All three parks were developed as urban parks by local governments. Citizen involvement is common to all three examples. One of main purposes of the Hyogo prefectural park and the Seoul Forest Park was the reuse of unused or abandoned areas. One goal in Hyogo, Shanghai, and Seoul was to restore the urban ecosystem and preserve the environment. We discussed the meaning of nature restoration in urban areas.
Site response analysis is an important topic in earthquake engineering. A time-domain numerical method called as one-dimensional (1D) finite element artificial boundary method is proposed to simulate the homogeneous plane elastic wave propagation in a layered half space subjected to the obliquely incident plane body wave. In this method, an exact artificial boundary condition combining the absorbing boundary condition with the inputting boundary condition is developed to model the wave absorption and input effects of the truncated half space under layer system. The spatially two-dimensional (2D) problem consisting of the layer system with the artificial boundary condition is transformed equivalently into a 1D one along the vertical direction according to Snell's law. The resulting 1D problem is solved by the finite element method with a new explicit time integration algorithm. The 1D finite element artificial boundary method is verified by analyzing two engineering sites in time domain and by comparing with the frequency-domain transfer matrix method with fast Fourier transform.
Since LID design process for the urban regeneration has not yet been established in Korea, this study was extablished in LID design process through reterauture reviews and expert opinions. But the extablished LID design processes have many limitations to be applied to proper LID facilities to the site because of not considering characteristics and water flow of the site. To solve the limitations of existing design processes, it is necessary for analysis of water flow through GIS analysis at the site. After analysis of water flow, it is important to find areas cut off water flow and to install LID facilities at those points. Through these considerations, this study present the improved LID design process to apply to urban regeneration.

This study evaluates the seismic fragilities in fill slopes in South Korea through parametric finite element analyses that have been barely investigated thus far. We consider three slope geometries for a slope of height 10 m and three slope angles, and two soil types, namely frictional and frictionless, associated with two soil states, loose and dense for frictional soils and soft and stiff for frictionless soils. The input ground motions accounting for four site conditions in South Korea are obtained from one-dimensional site response analyses. By comparing the numerical modeling of slopes using PLAXIS2D against the previous studies, we compiled suites of the maximum permanent slope displacement (Dmax) against two ground motion parameters, namely, peak ground acceleration (PGA) and Arias Intensity (IA). A probabilistic seismic demand model is adopted to compute the probabilities of exceeding three limit states (minor, moderate, and extensive). We propose multiple seismic fragility curves as functions of a single ground motion parameter and numerous seismic fragility surfaces as functions of two ground motion parameters. The results show that soil type, slope angle, and input ground motion influence these probabilities, and are expected to help regional authorities and engineers assess the seismic fragility of fill slopes in the road systems in South Korea.
