The aim of this study was to compare the regional difference of death from intentional self-harm. The analysis was based on data of intentional self-harm deaths (31,450) from the 2010-2011 vital statistics of Korea. The suicide rate (per 100,000 population) was 46.2 in male and 22.3 in female. Gender ratio (male / female) of suicide rate was 2.07, and Jeju province had the lowest gender ratio (1.82), and Chungbuk province had the highest gender ratio (2.42). In the age-gender standardized death rate (per 100,000) of self-harm by region, the highest suicide rate was observed in Gangwon province (44.8) and Chungnam province (44.3), and the lowest in Seoul metropolitan city (28.9) and Ulsan metropolitan city (29.2). There was a significant increase in the rate of suicide in city areas (odds ratio: 1.11, 95% CI: 1.08-1.13), county areas (1.62, 1.56-1.67) as compared with the rate of suicide in metropolitan areas. The commonest methods of suicide were hanging (53.7 percent), self-poisoning by pesticides (16.8 percent) and jumping from a height (14.3 percent). The methods used for suicide differed between rural (county) and urban areas (metropolitan city and city). In county areas, 43 percent of suicides used pesticides as compared to only 7-18 percent of those in urban areas. In urban areas, jumping was more common (13-17 percent vs. 6 percent). There were no difference in hanging between urban and rural areas. The odds ratio of death by pesticides was 9.86 in rural areas compared with death rate of metropolitan areas. The odds ratio of death by jumping was 0.59 in rural compared with death rate of metropolitan areas.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to compare dietary habits and mental health among middle school students in urban and rural areas based on bedtime, and to provide evidence supporting appropriate bedtime for Korean middle school students in relation to their healthy dietary habits and mental well-being. SUBJECTS/METHODS: The study population consisted of 25,681 second-year middle school students who participated in the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey in 2020-2022. Participants were asked about their bedtime and wake-up time during the past 7 days and were classified into five categories. The study compared the general characteristics, academic factors, dietary habits, and mental health of urban and rural students based on their bedtime. RESULTS: Bedtime was found to be later in the following order: urban female students, rural female students, urban male students, and rural male students. As bedtime got later, the rates of smoking and alcohol consumption increased. Students who went to bed before 11 p.m. had lower academic performance, while rural male students who went to bed after 2 a.m. had lower academic performance. Later bedtime was associated with increased smartphone usage, skipping breakfast, consuming fast food, and drinking carbonated beverages. Later bedtime was also associated with higher perceived stress levels, particularly among students who went to bed after 2 a.m., higher rates of suicidal ideation, experiencing sadness and despair, as well as the prevalence of clinically significant anxiety disorders. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that middle school students who go to bed too late have higher rates of smoking and alcohol drinking, as well as unhealthy eating habits, stress, suicidal ideation, sadness, and anxiety. Therefore, it is necessary to provide educational and social institutional support to promote adequate sleep for the health of adolescents.
Concern about body weight among young females is too much, so distorted body image and restrained eating are serious problems among Korean young females. A society preoccupied with thinness give a psychological burden to women, this burden may have adverse effects on health physically and psychologically. We tried this study to investigate body image, eating problems, and dietary intakes among female college students in urban areas of Korea. We satisfactorily surveyed using their body weight, desired weight dieting, binge eating, and night eating by self-questionnaires with 500 female college students. We evaluated their dietary intakes by semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaires to assess their usual intakes. After removing incomplete data, we analyzed 469 data by SAS 6.10. The 469 women aged 21.1 years. Their mean height, weight, and BMI were 161.4cm, 52.5kg, and 20.2kg/$m^2$ respectively. Though the frequency of obesity was only 2.6$\%$, the frequency of dissatisfaction with their body weight was 84.7$\%$. Female college students desired their hight, weight, and BMI to be 165.8cm, 48.2kg, and 17.5kg/$m^2$, respectively. The frequency of binge eating and night eating were 20.7$\%$and 6.8$\%$. The odds ratios for binge eating and night eating were 10.9(95$\%$ CI : 2.6-15.1) and 6.0(95% CI : 1.8-14.8) in the group satisfied with their body weight compared with the dissatisfied group. The odds ratios for binge eating and night eating were 2.6(95% CI : 1.6-4.4) and 2.4(95% CI : 1.1-5.4) in the dieting group compared with the non-dieting group. The mean caloric intake was 1, 840kacl and percent intakes of carbohydrate, protein, and fat wee 57.2$\%$, 16.3$\%$, and 24.0$\%$, respectively. The dieting group showed deficient intakes of protein and calcium significantly compared with the non-dieting group showed deficient intakes of protein and calcium significantly compared with the non-dieting group. Almost all women college students in urban area had dissatisfaction with their body shape, and desired severe undrerweight. The frequency of binge eating and night eating increased according to dissatisfaction with body weight, diet, and distortion of body image. Dieting has adverse effect on the intakes of essential nutrients. Educations is needed to correct distorted body image, and bad eating habits in young females, and marked preoccupation with thinness among women should then be reduced. This study aims to provide basic data for planning the supply and demand of urban parks and setting up facilities in urban parks that reflect the use patterns of visitors. The study was conducted by surveying the total number of urban park users and the number of users for different time zones and analyzing their use patterns through on-site surveys at 17 urban parks located in seven cities/counties in Gyeonggi province. The result showed that as for distribution of urban park users by time zone, the number of users was highest in the afternoon. Between 7 and 9 o'clock in the morning in weekdays, many users came to urban parks for their morning exercises. There was hardly no difference between male and female. When the number of users of 17 urban parks was surveyed, a park was used by 734 people per day on weekdays in average. When the total number of users per year was estimated, a resident nearby a park visited the place 4.7 times a year in average. In addition, the analysis showed that the number of users of man-made parks was twice as high as that of natural parks. The number of users did not vary depending on the size of a park. As for use patterns by time zone, no difference was found in activity types between parks larger than 100,000 $m^2$ and those less than 100,000 $m^2$. Usually, in the morning, users came for exercises In the afternoon, users visited the parks for more diverse purposes. In the evening, they tended to visit parks to work out and wrap up a day. Going forward, the outcome of this study should be utilized as important data for analyzing the demand and supply of urban parks. In addition, the number of users by time zone and their use patterns should be fully considered when introducing facilities in parks.
This study was done to analyze the health behavior of 5.166 elementary students from a urban city. They were students in grades 4. 5 and 6 attending five elementary schools which were selected from a city close to the capital city of Seoul. Health behaviors were measured using a questionnaire which was developed by WHO and was used by European countries. The data was managed and analysed using DBASE and SAS computer programs. The results of this study were as follows: 1. Eating behavior $\cdot$ Having Breakfast : Male students who were older had a higher number reporting having no breakfast(p< .05) $\cdot$ Taking Supplements : Older students had a higher number reporting taking nutrition supplements(p<.05) $\cdot$ Drinking milk: Female students had a lower number reporting drinking milk (p<.05). $\cdot$ Taking snacks : Female students who were older had a higher number reporting taking snacks(p< .05). $\cdot$ Drinking boiled water Male students had a lower number reporting drinking boiled water(p<.05). 2. Using seat belt Female students who were older had a lower number reporting using seat belt(p<.05). 3. Smoking : Male students who were younger had a higher number reporting experience with smoking(p <.05). 4. Personal hygiene $\cdot$ Washing hands before meals : Male students who were younger had a lower number reporting washing hands before meals(p<.05). $\cdot$ Brushing teeth: Male students had a lower number reporting brushing teeth(p<.05). 5. Reading distance : Younger students had a higher number reporting near reading distance(p<.05). 6. Exercise: Female students who were younger reported less exercise(p<.05). 7. Sewage Managing : Male students had a lower number reporting separating of garbage according to recyclability(p<.05).
The meaning of the study is in the following points. The first is to find the linguistic development of children through IQ test. The second is to find the family fostering factor for the linguistic development. The collection data has been from April 13, 1999 to April 27. The subjects for this study were two grade of elementary school, which is located in "K" city and "O"rural a chosen students(273), teachers(5), parents(176). The instruments used for this study were IQ test by Korea Behavioral Science institute and family fostering environment 25 items. Teachers linguistic evaluation. The data analysis was done using Pearson's Correlation Coefficient, t-test, ANOVA using SPSS/pc program. This study found following results. 1) The similarly agreement degree between children lexical abilities with teachers comprehending evaluation maler r= .745, female r=0.809 The similarly agreement degree between children lexical abilities with teachers expressing evaluation, male r= .657, female r= .797(P<.01) 2) In comparing of the gender difference of urban, the femail is a little high than male(t= .5065), but the especial point is more large difference in male than in female. (P<.01) 3) The higher factor of influencing the linguistic development is the breast-feeding(r=-.3279) in all the gender(P<.01), So that the brast-feeding better than cow's milk, mother better than the other family members in feeding, 6~8months better than one or two years in feeding term.
We tried to evaluate frequencies and severities of malocclusion of various socioeconomic areas according to growth and development. To obtain objective validity, we used Handicapping Labiolingual Deviation (HLD) suggested by Draker, Treatment Priority Index (TPI) by Grainger, Handicapped Malocclusion Assessing Record (HMAR) by American Dental Association and American Association of Orthodontist. Seoul and Kwangju were selected as an urban group, Ahnyang as an middle socioeconomic group and Hwasun near the Kwangju area as an rural group. 140 (male 63, female 73) of 5th grade in 'E' elementary school students in Seoul, 202 (male 101, female 101) of 'S' elementary school students in Kwangju, 207(male 105, female 102) of 'H' elementary school students in Hwasun, and 100(male 49, female 51) of 'M' elementary school students of in Ahnyang of all the same grade were analyzed and we obtained the results as follows; 1. TPI, HLD, and HMAR showed high coincidence and reproducibility between different observer. (p<0.01) 2. In comparison of TPI, HLD, and HMAR according to clinical decision, there was statistically difference between each other. (p<0.01) 3. As the severity of malocclusion increases there was high correlation between TPI and HLD, and between HLD and HMAR (p<0.05) 4. With respect to differences between areas in TPI and HLD, there was statistically difference between Ahnyang and other areas. 5. In Seoul as an urban group there was a high incidence of periodic checkup and history of orthodontic treatment than other area. 6. Mode of feeding and posture during sleeping did not affect the severity of malocclusion. As a conclusion, TPI, HLD and HMAR are so reproducible and coincident that they can be used as a guide on evaluating the frequency and severity of malocclusion and determining the priority of orthodontic treatment to determine the need and supply of orthodontic treatment. Furthermore these indices can provide objectively valid data for establishing public health problem solution.
The effect of meal service for home-staying, urban elderly with low income on their mineral status and prevalence of clinical symptoms was evaluated. One hundred. One hundred and eighty three subjects were assigned to meal-served(served) and non-served(non-served)groups. A meal containing approximately one half of the RDA for energy, protein, calcium and iron was served as lunch every day to served group at a welfare center. Dietary, biochemical and clinical data were collected before and after 6 months of meal service and the changes of parameters were analyzed with paired t-test. served female showed significantly increased intake of calcium. The mean hemoglobin, serum iron, TIBC and serum copper of female were significantly increase with meal service. The proportion of anemic female compared to reference data on hemoglobin, hematocrit and serum iron were 45.5$\%$, 29.1$\%$ and 16.4$\%$ respectively, but were lowered to 18.2$\%$, 7.3$\%$, and 5.5$\%$ after 6 months of meal service. served male showed significant increase in MCHC, serum copper, and urinary Na. The urinary Ca/Creatinine, which is often used as an index of bone resorption, was decreased significantly in served group. The decrease in the proportion of served women suffering from edema of ankle and diarrhea was most apparent and less women reported feeling clinical symptoms of dizziness, constipation, difficulty in hearing, and coughing after meal service. The symptoms of benumbness of hands and feet and coughing was lowered most among men after meal service. Clinical symptoms of non-served elderly did not show improvement in feeling clinical symptoms except slightly decreased frequency in coughing of female and buzzing sound in the ears and diarrhea of male.
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the value evaluation of food in urban Korean adolescents. The conclusions drawn from the analysis of values of foods are as follows: 1. There are five factors drawn from the analysis of values of foods, that is, subjective evaluational factor. Objective factors are social factor, economic factor, quality attribute factor, and freguency of food intake factor. And it has been revealed that there is some relationship between these factors. The subjective evaluational variable depends most strongly on the sensory variable, especially taste, flavor, color and shape of food, described in the order of influence. It also depends on the experiential frequency of intake. 2. With regard to the attitude of evaluation of food, there is a considerable difference between junior high school students and high school students, and between male and female students, This difference can be noticed in almost all the variables dealt with in this study, especially in the subjective evaluational aspect, experiential aspect, and social aspect, A significant difference was found between junior high school students and high school students and between male and female students on both subjective and objective values of foods. Male students valued food which brought about a 'Satiety' more so than female. And consequently, they take such kinds of foods more frequently. More female students than male students and more junior high school students than high school students have a strong conception of the socio-cultural value of foods, that is, the spatial and temporal symbol of foods.
Based on "The Global Gender Gap Report" by World Economic Forum, this study identified factors of gender gap and analyzed a relationship between income growth and economic structural improvement with 145 countries. Consequently, sex ratio has a positive relationship with GNI growth rate and ICT development index. Female illiteracy has a negative relationship with only GNI growth rate, and female seat of parliament has a positive relationship with only with only GNI growth rate. Female labor participation rate has a positive relationship with inly ICT development index. These results confirmed the importance of future female labor force. With these results, many countries will need to reconsider discrimination against women and establish strategy based on an institution and a policy to prepare the 4th industrial revolution.
