  • Spatiotemporal characteristics of precipitation in Korea, associated with the weakening of Tropical Cyclones (TCs) around the Korean Peninsula ($32-36^{\circ}N$, $122-132^{\circ}E$) over the last 30 years (1979-2008), were investigated. Weakened TCs are classified as WEC (Weakened to Extratropical Cyclone) and WTD (Weakened to Tropical Depression). In WEC, precipitation was evenly distributed all over the Korean Peninsula and the greater precipitation was recorded in the southern coast. In WTD, the most precipitation was recorded in the southern coast but low precipitation was recorded in the central and inland areas of Korea. The difference of precipitation between WEC and WTD was not statistically significant in Region 2 (Jeollanam-do, Gyeongsangnam-do, southeastern part of Gyeongsangbuk-do, Jeju-do); however, the precipitation resulting from WEC was greater than that resulting from WTD in Region 1 (central area of Korea, Jeollabuk-do, inland of Gyeongsangbuk-do). In WEC, the developed upper-level potential vorticity (PV) and low-level temperature trough shifted to the northwest of TCs approaching Korea. In addition, an upper-level jet stream and strong divergence field were observed to the northeast of the TCs. It was assumed that these meteorological factors had induced baroclinic instability and diabatic process, which created a large precipitation area around the TCs. However, the intense PV, temperature trough, jet stream were not observed in WTD, which created a small precipitation area around the TCs.

  • The pumping characteristics of a single-stage disk-type drag pump ( DTDP ) are calculated, for the variation of the vertical clearance between a rotor and stator and of the radial clearance between a rotor and casing wall, by the three-dimensional direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC)method. The gas flow mainly belongs to the molecular transition flow region. Spiral channels of a DTDP are cut on the both the upper and lower sides of a rotating disk, but the stationary disks are planar. As a consequence of results, the vertical and radial clearances have a significant effect on the pumping performance. Experiments are performed under the outlet pressure range of 0.4 $^{\sim}$ 533 Pa. When the numerical results are compared to the experimental data, the numerical results agree well qualitatively.

  • This study is concerned with tensile and Charpy impact properties of high-strength bainitic steels fabricated by controlled rolling process. Six kinds of steels were fabricated by varying finish rolling temperature, start cooling temperature, and cooling rate, and their microstructures and tensile and Charpy impact properties were investigated. Their effective grain sizes were also characterized by the electron backscatter diffraction analysis. The microstructures of the steels rolled in the single phase region were most similar to those of the steels rolled in the two phase region. The steels cooled from $700{^{\circ}C}$ were composed mainly of granular bainites, while those cooled from $600{^{\circ}C}$ contained a number of bainitic ferrites, which resulted in the decrease in ductility and upper shelf energy in spite of the increase in strength. In the steels cooling from $600^{\circ}C$, fine acicular ferrites were well formed when the cooling rate was slow, which led to the best combination of high ductility, high upper shelf energy, and low energy transition temperature according to the decrease in the overall effective grain size due to the presence of acicular ferrites having smaller effective grain size.

  • An experimental study has been performed on the flow over a rotating disk, where the diameter of the disk is 500 mm and the maximum vertical deviation of the upper surface is $50 \mu{m}$ for the whole range of the angular velocity up to 3400 rpm. The flow visualization experiment for the wall jet flow induced by impinging circular jet is carried out using schlieren system and measurements are made by 3-hole and 5-hole pitot tubes. Schlieren photographs show that as the rotating speed increases the wall jet flow becomes more stable and the size of the largest eddies becomes smaller. Measurements for impinging jet flow on the stationary disk verify the accuracy of the present experiment, and those for free rotating disk flow display the existence of transition region from laminar to turbulent flows. Measurements for impinging jet flow on the rotating disk exhibit the interaction between the wall jet and the viscous pumping effect, which explains the decay in size of turbulent eddies illustrated by the schlieren photographs.

  • Thurbulent thermal convection between two plates, bottom plate is at higher temperature $T_{h}$ and the upper plate is at lower temperature $T_{i}$ is numerically investigated. Model equations are abridged Reynolds stress equations; full Reynolds stress equations are simplified to yield algebraic relations in case of mean square velocity fluctuations in vertical and horizontal directions. Boundary conditions for turbulent kinetic energy k and mean square temperature variance .thera.$^{2}$oner bar at the plate surfaces are set to be zero and those of dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy .epsilon. and dissipation rate of mean square temperature variance .epsilon.$_{\theta}$ are assumed at first grid point nearest to the boundary surfaces, whose values are approximated by inviscid estimates. Results show that temperature profiles are in good agreement with experimental data except transition region, in which temperature is over-predicted. Such discrepancy becomes larger as the Rayleigh number becomes smaller. Nusselt numbers, which are calculated from the temperature gradients at the boundary surfaces, are also in good agreement with experimental data.a.a.

  • Our recent observations of the Sun through strong spectral lines have revealed several important properties of the three-minute umbral oscillations inside sunspots -- the oscillations of intensity and Doppler velocity with periods of 2 to 3 minutes. The oscillations usually occur in the form of a time series of oscillation packets each of which lasts 10 to 20 minutes, not as continuous trains. Each oscillation packet is characterized by a singly peaked power spectrum of velocity oscillation. The oscillations propagate in the vertical direction from the photosphere to the corona. In the upper chromosphere, they develop into shocks that eventually collide with the transition region. When shocks propagate along a highly inclined direction, the merging of two successive shocks can take place. Once they enter the corona, they change to linear compressional waves. In the image plane, the three-minute oscillations propagate with high speeds in the transverse direction as well, usually propagating radially outwards from a point, and sometimes accompanying spiraling patterns of Doppler velocity. These observational properties can be theoretically explained by postulating the spatio-temporally localized source of fast MHD waves at a depth of about 2000 km below the surface, the excitation of slow MHD waves via mode conversion near the photosphere, and the resonance of the slow waves in the photospheric layer below the temperature minimum, and the nonlinear development of slow waves in the chromosphere.

  • This study aims to examine the correlation between microstructures and the mechanical properties of two high-strength API X70 linepipe steels with different specimen directions and Moaddition. The microstructure of the Mo-added steel has an irregularly shaped AF, GB matrix with pearlite because of the relatively large deformation in the non-recrystallization temperature region, while that of the Mo-free steel shows a PF matrix with bainitic microstructure. In the Mo-added steel, the M/A (martensite-austenite) in granular bainite (GB) and pearlite act as crack initiation sites with decreased upper shelf energy and an increased ductile to brittle transition temperature (DBTT). Regardless of Mo addition, all of the steels demonstrate higher strength and lower elongation in the T direction than in the L direction because of the short dislocation glide path and ease of pile-up at grain boundaries. In addition, the impact test specimens with T-L direction had a lower impact absorbed energy and higher DBTT than those with the L-T direction because the former exhibit shorter unit crack path compared to the latter.

  • We have mapped 1 $deg^2$ region toward a high latitude cloud MBM 40 in the J = 1 - 0 transition of $^{12}CO$ and $^{13}CO$, using the 3 mm SIS receiver on the 14 m telescope at Taeduk Radio Astronomy Observatory. We used a high resolution autocorrelator to resolve extremely narrow CO linewidths of the molecular gas. Though the linewidth of the molecular gas is very narrow (FWHP < 1 km $s^{-1}$ ), it is found that there is an evident velocity difference between the middle upper part and the lower part of the cloud. Their spectra for both of $^{12}CO$ and $^{13}CO$ show blue wings, and the position-velocity map shows clear velocity difference of 0.4 km $s^{-1}$ between two parts. The mean velocity of the cloud is 3.1 km $s^{-1}$. It is also found that the linewidths at the blueshifted region are broader than those of the rest of the cloud. We confirmed that the visual extinction is less than 3 magnitude, and the molecular gas is translucent. We discussed three mass estimates, and took a mass of 17 solar masses from CO integrated intensity using a conversion factor $2.3 {\times} 10^{20} cm^{-2} (K\;km s^{-1})^{-1}$. Spatial coincidence and close morphological similarity is found between the CO emission and dust far-infrared (FIR) emission. The ratio between the 100 f.Lm intensity and CO integrated intensity of MBM 40 is 0.7 (MJy/sr)/(K km $s^{-1}$), which is larger than those of dark clouds, but much smaller than those of GMCs. The low ratio found for MBM 40 probably results from the absence of internal heating sources, or significant nearby external heating sources.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the petrology of basalt and the volcanic process in the Seondol cinder cone, Seobjikoji area, eastern Jeju Island. The Seondol cinder cone is mainly composed of spatters in the lower part, pyroclastic deposits including reddish brown blocks, ashes with volcanic bombs in the middle part, and dark black scoria deposits in the upper part. The volcanic sequences suggest volcanic processes that progress through Strombolian eruption and end with Hawaiian lava effusion which breached the cinder cone northwestward and extended over northwestward as lava delta and basalt emplaced as a volcanic neck in the central part of crater in the cinder cone. The age of basalt lava flows is about $95\;{\pm}\;3\;ka$. The basalts belong to transitional basalt and show products of fractional crystallization of clinopyroxene and olivine from a parental basalt magma on the basis of variation diagram of major, trace and rare earth elements. Basalts in the region of this study are plotted at the region of within plate basalt.
