  • A practical procedure for the ultimate compressive strength-based safety and reliability assessment of the double skin upper deck structure is described. The external compressive stress acting on the upper deck structure which is due to the still water and wave-induced sagging moment is approximately estimated by using the existing rule of classification society. The ultimate compressive stress of double skin structure under the action of sagging moment is analyzed by using idealized structural unit method. Here an idealized plate element subjected to uniaxial load is formulated by idealizing the nonlinear behaviour of the actual element taking account of the initial imperfections in the form of initial deflection and welding residual stress. The interaction effect between the local and global failure in the structure is also taken into consideration. The accuracy of the present method is verified comparing with the present solution and the existing numerical and experimental results for unit member and welded box columns. The safety of the structure is evaluated using the concept of conventional central safety factor and the reliability assessment is made by using Cornel's MVFOSM method. The present procedure is then applied to upper deck structure of double skin product oil carrier. The influence of the initial imperfections and the yield stress of the material on the safety and reliability of the structure is investigated.

  • The panels are used as a composite part of the completed deck. They replace the main bottom transverse deck reinforcement and also serve as a form surface for the cast-in-place concrete upper layer that contains the top of deck reinforcement. In this paper, three types of the detail for joints was selected and their structural performance in terms of strength and crack contral was investigated through static tests on composite beams. Form the results, the validity of loop joints for continuity of half-depth precast deck was observed and especially an overlapping length of loop joint and transverse reinforcement were checked. The results suggest that increasing the loop overlapping length increases the flexural strength of half-depth precast deck with loop joints. In terms of crack contral, the loop joint with transverse reinforcement showed better performance.

  • The panels are used as a composite part of the completed deck. They replace the main bottom transverse deck reinforcement and also serve as a form surface for the cast-in-place concrete upper layer that contains the top of deck reinforcement. Research has also demonstrated that mechanical shear ties on the top of the panels are required. In a composite deck with precast panels, it is required to notice behavior of transverse joints between panels. In this paper, static tests of composite deck with shear ties and loop joints were conducted. From the results, the validity of loop joints for continuity of deck was observed. Also, a composite behavior was abserved between precast panel and slab concrete. Tested composite decks with shear ties have 140~164% ultimate strength than have no shear ties due to the increase of composite action. Therefore, the shear ties between the slabs were sufficient to enforce composite flexural behavior to failure.

  • In this paper, an experimental study is carried out to find out structural behavior of upper slab in concrete box girder bridges. The major variables in the tests are the cross-section of upper slab including haunch dimensions. The strains of concrete and steel bars and the deflections of slabs are measured automatically during the tests. The test results indicate that the size of haunches has much influence on the structural behavior of box girders. The appropriate haunch dimensions are suggested from the present study.

  • The panels are used as a composite part of the completed deck. They replace the main bottom transverse deck reinforcement and also serve as a form surface for the cast-in-place concrete upper layer that contains the top of deck reinforcement. However, in order to apply the precast panels to bridges properly, it is necessary to fully understand the structural characteristics of joint in precast panels. Particularly, since the bridge deck is under repeated loads such as traffic loads, fatigue behavior and characteristics of joint should be investigated. In this paper, fatigue tests of composite deck with shear ties and loop joints were conducted. The fatigue tests were conducted with an application of repeated loading and wheel loading. Test results were analyzed to examine the current design code for fatigue of reinforcement bar and serviceability under repeated loading.

  • In this study, a new method of fabricated concrete deck bridge construction is proposed. This paper details the method in which concrete multi-girders and fabricated concrete decks are rested on the upper flange of the girder and the female to female type sheat-key is formed to connect girder and deck. The finite element analysis is performed to verify the accuracy of the structural behaviors of the fabricated concrete deck bridge by comparing with experimental results. The first task performed is the analysis of the equilibrium of the member force occurring between the deck and the girder. After verifying equilibrium of the member force determined by the finite element analysis, this process is applied to the analysis of maximum member force as the position of design load. This task is utilized to determine the safety of each member according to the same scale finite element model. The final process in this study is to compare the deflection of girders used in experiment with that of the same scale finite element model to verify the strength of fabricated cincrete deck bridge. By this comparison, it is shown that the behavior of the fabricated concrete deck bridge is almost same as the finite element analysis. The second task is to analyze the load distribution effect according to the number of diaphragms and the composite effect due to the cinnection of the deck and girder by the finite element analysis. From the results of second task, it is found that the load distribution effect is not related to the number of diaphragms in case of the central loading, but is related to the number of diaphragms for eccentric loading. Analysis of the load distribution indicates that the effective number of diaphragm is three. It is also shown that the maximum deflection is decreased to almost one half due to the composite action of the deck and girder.

  • To determine the seismic applicability of a long-span railway concrete upper-deck arch bridge with concrete-filled steel-tube (CFST) rigid skeleton ribs, some fundamental principles and seismic approaches for long-span bridges are investigated to update the design methods in the current Code for Seismic Design of Railway Engineering of China. Ductile and mixed isolation design are investigated respectively to compare the structural seismic performances. The flexural moment and plastic rotation demands and capacities are quantified to assess the seismic status of the ductile components. A kind of triple friction pendulum (TFP) system and lead-plug rubber bearing are applied simultaneously to regularize the structural seismic demands. The numerical analysis shows that the current ductile layout with continuous rigid frame approaching spans should be strengthened to satisfy the demands of rare earthquakes. However, the mixed isolation design embodies excellent seismic performances for the continuous girder approaching span of this railway arch bridge.

  • It is very difficult to execute the vibration analysis of a huge strucutre, which takes up much time and expense. In this paper we intend to make the equivalent system of a local vibration system of a huge structure with a view to improving the dynamic characteristics and reducing time and expense. First of all, upper deck structure model is maded. And we perform the vibration analysis by the Substructure Synthesis Method and execute the exciting test for the upper deck structure model, and observe the coincidences of two results to confirm the reliability of the analyzing tools used. To make the equivalent system, we give boundary condition to sub-structure that want to be modified and execute the Sensitivity Analysis Method and the Optimum Structural Modification Method. And we execute the structural modification of the equivalent system.. The following can be found from this study. 1. The analytical results are generally coincident with each other. 2. The equivalent system of the superstructure model can be easily obtained using the sensitivity analysis metho and the optimum structural modification method. 3. The structural modification using the equivalent system can be obtained good results above 90% of object value.

  • The container mobilization of material resources has increased continually owing to international economy growth and overseas trade increase in recent years. There are large amounts of order received for container carriers which are the biggest in the world ranging from 8,000 TEU to 10,000 TEU or above The very large container carriers have minimum thickness of sheer strake, upper deck and hatch coaming about $65mm{\sim}90mm$. Therefore, this study is performed in order to develop vertical welding process with high deposition rates applicable to thick plate above 65mm thickness. Electrogas welding process with 1 pole and 2 poles has been developed to apply to vertical joint with thick plates in the shipyard. In this paper, it was explained that the relationship of cross section to various groove types and executed that electrogas welding for thick plates. The mechanical tests were carried out to verify the soundness and effectiveness of EGW.
