This paper proposes a novel approach to interference avoidance via inter-cell relaying in cellular OFDMA-TDD (orthogonal frequency division multiple access - time division duplex) systems. The proposed scheme, termed asymmetry balancing, is targeted towards next-generation cellular wireless systems which are envisaged to have ad hoc and multi-hop capabilities. Asymmetry balancing resolves the detrimental base station (BS)-to-BS interference problem inherent to TDD networks by synchronizing the TDD switching points (SPs) across cells. In order to maintain the flexibility of TDD in serving the asymmetry demands of individual cells, inter-cell relaying is employed. Mobile stations (MSs) in a cell which has a shortage of uplink (UL) resources and spare downlink (DL) resources use free DL resources to off-load UL traffic to cooperating MSs in a neighboring cell using ad hoc communication. In an analogous fashion DL traffic can be balanced. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the asymmetry balancing concept by considering a seven-cell cluster and a single overloaded cell in the center. A mathematical model is developed to quantify the envisaged gains in using asymmetry balancing and is verified via Monte Carlo simulations. It is demonstrated that asymmetry balancing offers great flexibility in UL-DL resource allocation. In addition, results show that a spectral efficiency improvement of more than 100% can be obtained with respect to a case where the TDD SPs are adapted to the cell-specific demands.

LTE-Advanced system requires uplink multi-antenna transmission in order to achieve the peak spectral efficiency of 15bps/Hz. In this paper, the uplink MIMO system model for the LTE-Advanced is proposed and an efficient link adaptation shceme using precoding is considered providing error rate reduction and system capacity enhancement. In particular, the proposed scheme determines a transmission rank by selecting the optimal wideband precoding matrix, which is based on the derived signal-to-interference and noise ratio (SINR) for the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) receivers of $2{\times}4$ multiple input multiple output (MIMO). The proposed scheme is verified by simulation with a practical MIMO channel model. The simulation results of average block-error-rate(BLER) reflect that the gain due to the proposed rank adapted transmission over full-rank transmission is evident particularly in the case of lower modulation and coding scheme (MCS) and high mobility, which means the severe channel fading environment.

In this paper, we propose a grouping technique for the SDD(Synchronous Digital Duplexing) based on OFDMA(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access). The SDD has advantages of increasing data efficiency and flexibility of resource since SDD can transmit uplink signals and downlink signals simultaneously by using mutual time information and mutual channel information, obtained during mutual ranging process. However, the SDD has a disadvantage of requiring additional CS to maintain orthogonality of OFDMA symbols when the sum of mutual time difference and mutual channel length between AP(access point) and SS(subscriber station) or among SSs are larger than CP length. In order to minimize the length of CS for the case of requiring additional CS in SDD, we proposes a grouping technique which controls transmit timing and receive timing of AP and SS in a cell by classifying them into groups. Performances of the proposed grouping technique are evaluated by computer simulation.

In this paper, we propose a joint bandwidth allocation and path selection scheme for IEEE 802.16j networks in uplink with cooperative relaying, and we evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme by using OPNET based simulation in hilly terrain with heavy tree density. The proposed scheme maximizes the system throughput in uplink with cooperative relaying in IEEE 802.16j networks. Then, we transform the proposed scheme into multi-dimensional multiple choice knapsack problem (MMKP) based scheme. We also propose uplink throughput maximization scheme and MMKP based scheme without cooperative relaying. We show that the system throughput of the proposed MMKP based scheme is higher than that of link quality based scheme, and cooperative relaying provides higher system throughput than the conventional case without cooperative relaying in uplink.

In this paper, we propose a selective DFT spreading method to solve a high PAPR problem in uplink OFDMA system. A selective characteristic is added to the DFT spreading, so the DFT spreading method is mixed with SLM method. However, to minimize increment of computational complexity, differently with common SLM method, our proposed method uses only one DFT spreading block. After DFT, several copy branches are generated by multiplying with each different matrix. This matrix is obtained by linear transforming the each phase rotation in front of DFT block. And it has very lower computational complexity than one DFT process. For simulation, we suppose that the 512 point IFFT is used, the number of effective sub-carrier is 300, the number of allowed sub-carrier to each user's is 1/4 and 1/3 and QPSK modulation is used. From the simulation result, when the number of copy branch is 4, our proposed method has more than about 5.2 dB PAPR reduction effect. It is about 1.8 dB better than common DFT spreading method and 0.95 dB better than common SLM which uses 32 copy branches. And also, when the number of copy branch is 2, it is better than SLM using 32 copy branches. From the comparison, the proposed method has 91.79 % lower complexity than SLM using 32 copy branches in similar PAPR reduction performance. So, we can find a very good performance of our proposed method. Also, we can expect the similar performance when all number of sub-carrier is allocated to one user like the OFDM.

In this paper, we propose a coarse and fine frequency synchronization method which is suitable for the 3GPP(3rd Generation Partnership Project) LTE(Long Term Evolution) FDD(Frequency Division Duplexing) / TDD(Time Division Duplexing) dual mode system. In general, PSS(Primary Synchronization Signal) correlation based estimation method and CP(Cyclic Prefix) correlation based tracking loop are applied for coarse and fine frequency synchronization in 3GPP LTE OFDMA(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) system, respectively. However, the conventional coarse frequency synchronization method has performance degradation caused by fading channel and squaring loss. Also, the conventional fine frequency synchronization method cannot guarantee stable operation in TDD mode because of signal power difference between uplink and downlink subframe. Therefore, in this paper, we propose enhanced coarse and fine frequency synchronization methods which can estimate more accurately in multi-path fading channel and high speed channel environments and has stable operation for TDD frame structure, respectively. By computer simulation, we show that the proposed methods outperform the conventional methods, and verify that the proposed frequency synchronization method can guarantee stable operation in 3GPP LTE FDD/TDD dual mode downlink receiver.

In this paper, we propose an iterative self-interference (SI) channel estimation method for in-band full-duplex cellular systems that employ orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) on downlink (DL) and single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) on uplink (UL), as in Long Term Evolution (LTE) systems. The proposed method first acquires coarse estimates of SI channels using DL signals and UL pilots, which are known to the base stations, and then refines the estimates by consecutively exploiting averaging in the frequency domain and channel truncation in the time domain. In addition, the method enhances the estimates further by iteratively executing this estimation procedure, and does not require any radio resources dedicated to SI channel estimation. Simulation results demonstrate that by significantly improving the SI channel estimation performance without requiring exact knowledge of the SI channel length, the proposed method achieves UL channel estimation performance and signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) performance very close to those in perfect SI cancellation.

In this paper, we analyze the adjacent interference between WCDMA and M-WiMAX systems in the 2.6GHz Band under the SISO (Single Input Single Output) configuration. The interference scenarios are characterized into 8 scenarios with different victim and interfering links. Among the 8 scenarios, we find that the most performance loss is observed in the scenarios of victim uplink suffering interference from downlink in both systems. Besides, guard band is applied to mitigate the adjacent interference in all the scenarios. Especially, we reveal that M-WiMAX system is much more sensitive to adjacent interference than WCDMA system due to the lower transmission power. In this paper, we consider the worst interference environment, where interferers always transmit with the maximum power, a loose spectrum mask is adapted, and no additional channel fitters are equipped in both systems.

We propose a new type of OFDM-CDMA scheme which allows large inter-user timing offset using zero correlation zone(ZCZ) code in conjunction with block spreading technique. Moreover to maximize spectral efficiency, the proposed OFDMA does not have guard time(GT). This is opposite to the trends in the conventional schemes where GT are supposed to be larger to allow larger inter-user timing offset. It is remarkable that the proposed GT-free OFDM-CDMA scheme completely cancels inter-user interference in the multipath fading simply by despreading process. This inter-user interference-free feature still remains even there exist inter-user timing offsets as large as multiple OFDM symbols. Although the self-user interference exists due to no GT, it can be effectively suppressed by simple successive interference cancellation(SIC) from the first symbol in spread block as it is free from inter symbol interference(ISI).

Spectrum scarcity seems to be the most challenging issue to be solved in new wireless telecommunication services. It is shown that spectrum unavailability is mainly due to spectrum inefficient utilization and inappropriate physical layer execution rather than spectrum shortage. Daily increasing demand for new wireless services with higher data rate and QoS level makes the upgrade of the physical layer modulation techniques inevitable. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) which utilizes multicarrier modulation to provide higher data rates with the capability of flexible resource allocation, although has widely been used in current wireless systems and standards, seems not to be the best candidate for cognitive radio systems. Filter Bank based Multi-Carrier (FBMC) is an evolutionary scheme with some advantages over the widely-used OFDM multicarrier technique. In this paper, we focus on the total throughput improvement of a cognitive radio network using FBMC modulation. Along with this modulation scheme, we propose a novel uplink radio resource allocation algorithm in which fairness issue is also considered. Moreover, the average throughput of the proposed FBMC based cognitive radio is compared to a conventional OFDM system in order to illustrate the efficiency of using FBMC in future cognitive radio systems. Simulation results show that in comparison with the state of the art two algorithms (namely, Shaat and Wang) our proposed algorithm achieves higher throughputs and a better fairness for cognitive radio applications.
