  • A post-processing program based on the OOP(Object-Oriented Programming) concept has been developed for flow visualization of the flow analysis code(PowerCFD) using unstructured cell-centered method. User-friendly GUI(GTaphic User Interface) has been built on the base of MFC(Microsoft Foundation Class). The program is organized as modules by classes including those based on VTK(Visualization ToolKit)-library, and these classes are made to function through inheritance and cooperation which is an important and valuable OOP concept. The major functions of this post-processor program are introduced and demonstrated, which include mesh plot, contour plot, vector plot, surface plots, cut plot, clip plot, xy-plot and streamline plot as well as view manipulation (translation, rotation, scaling etc).

  • The aerodynamics of the Wells turbine has been studied using a 3-dimensional, unstructured mesh flow solver for the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The basic feature of the Wells turbine is that even though the cyclic airflow produces oscillating axial forces on the airfoil blades, the tangential force on the rotor is always in the same direction. Geometry used to define the 3-dimensional numerical grid is based upon that of an experimental test rig. The 3-dimensional Wells turbine model, consisting of approximate 220,000 cells is tested at four axial flow rates. In the calculations the angle of attack has been varied between $10^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$ of blades. Representative results from each case are presented graphically and analyzed. It is concluded that this method holds much promise for future development of Wells turbines.

  • The Rayleigh Plesset based cavitation model(Singhal et al., 2002) is reproduced through a pressure-based finite-volume numerical method using unstructured hexagonal mesh, which is developed by the author. In the process of reproduction, a mass conservation problem by the large density changes associated with phase change, which wasn't mentioned by them, has been exposed. One resolution about it is proposed and then cavitating flow characteristics around a hydrofoil (NACA66) for evaluation of the code are investigated. The computational results are verified by the comparison with the experimental results and show good agreements with them.

  • The present study deals with CFD analysis of 'The vortex generators on plastic plate heat exchanger'. When a vortex generator is placed on the heat transfer surface, the flow gets more complex because it entails complicated three-dimensional flows such as separation, reattachment, and recirculation. CFX-5.4, a commercial code utilizing unstructured mesh, has been used as a computational method for solving RANS(Reynolds-Averaged Wavier-Stokes) equations, and the applied turbulence model is $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. In addition, those computational analyses were implemented under various conditions , with or without the vortex generator between two plates, the number, form and the size of vortex generator, and different attack of angle. From the calculated temperature, velocity and pressure distribution, vorticity, wall heat flux and so on under those conditions, this study shows the effect of vortex on heat transfer.

  • The traditional computational fluid or structure dynamics analysis approaches have contributed to solve many delicate engineering problems. But for the most of recent engineering problems which are influenced by fluid-structure interaction effect strongly, traditional individual approaches have limited analysis abilities for the exact simulation. Owing to above-mentioned reason, nowadays fluid-structure interaction analysis has become a matter of concern and interest. FSI analysis require several unprecedented techniques for the combining individual analysis tool into integrated analysis tool. The Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian(ALE, in short) method is the new description of continum motion, which combines the advantages of the classical kinematical descriptions, i.e. Lagrangian and Eulerian description, while minimizing their respective drawbacks. In this paper, the ALE description is adapted to simulate fluid-structure interaction problems. An automatic re-mesh algorithm and a fluid-structure coupling process are included to analyze the interaction and moving motion during the 2-D axisymmetric solid rocket interior FSI phenomena simulation.

  • Free-surface flows with an arbitrary deformation, induced by a submerged hydrofoil, are simulated numerically, considering two-fluid flows of both water and air. The computation is performed by a finite volume method using unstructured meshes and an interface capturing scheme to determine the shape of the free surface. The method uses control volumes with an arbitrary number of faces and allows cell wise local mesh refinement. The integration in space is of second order, based on midpoint rule integration and linear interpolation. The method is fully implicit and uses quadratic interpolation in time through three time levels. The linear equations are solved by conjugate gradient type solvers, and the non-linearity of equations is accounted for through Picard iterations. The solution method is of pressure-correction type and solves sequentially the linearized momentum equations, the continuity equation, the conservation equation of one species, and the equations for two turbulence quantities. Finally, a comparison is quantitatively made at the same speed between the computation and experiment in which the grid sensitivity is numerically checked.

  • Supersonic flows over an EFP(explosively formed projectile) have been calculated by a high-order conservation law scheme and two-layer $$textsc{k}$-{\varepsilon}$ model on hybrid viscous unstructured mesh. To verify the accuracy and robustness of the developed code, two basic flows about airfoils are computed and results are compared with existing experimental data and computational results. The comparisons confirm the validity of the code and justify our use for such a highly supersonic and viscous flow over a blunt body. Complex flow features of supersonic flows over an EFP are clearly captured and show agreements with the flow visualization. From the interaction of oblique shocks near the surface of flare, flow structures, that were not identified by previous experimental results, are discovered as a result of present computation.

  • In this study, with the finite element method we numerically investigate the deformation of liquid drops surrounded by Newtonian or non-Newtonian viscous medium in the axisymmetric contraction flow. 1, 2 or 4 Newtonian or non-Newtonian drops are considered and the truncated power-law model is applied In order to describe non-Newtonian viscous behavior for both fluids. In this type of flow the drop exhibits considerably large deformation, and thus techniques of unstructured mesh generation and auto-remeshing are employed to accurately express the fluid mechanical behavior. We examine the deformation pattern of liquid drops with viscosity dependence different from that of the surrounding medium and also explain their interactions by comparing relative position or speed of drop front.
