This paper represents a numerical study of the flow field due to the interactions between a pair of vortices produced by vortex generators in a rectangular channel flow. In order to analyze longitudinal vortices induced by the vortex generators, the pseudo-compressibility method is introduced into the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Strokes equations of a 3-dimensional unsteady, incompressible viscous flow. A two-layer $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulence model is applied to a flat plate 3-dimensional turbulence boundary to predict the flow structure and turbulence characteristics of the vortices. The computational results predict accurately the vortex characteristics related to the flow field, the Reynolds shear stresses and turbulent kinetic energy. Also, in the prediction of skin friction characteristics the computational results are reasonably close to those of the experiment obtained from other researchers.
The unsteady-state, incompressible and three-dimensional large eddy simulation(LES) was carried out to analyze the structure of turbulent flow fields according to the operating loads of three-dimensional small-size axial fan(SSAF). LES shows the best prediction performance in comparison with any other Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) method because static pressure coefficients analysed by LES show a little bit larger than measurements including all flow coefficients. Also, it can be known that the wake of SSAF is divided into from axial flow to radial flow before and behind stall region according to the increase of static pressure through LES analysis.
A comprehensive DES quality numerical analysis has been carried out for reacting flows in constant-area and divergent scramjet combustor configuration with and without a cavity. Transverse injection of hydrogen is considered over a broad range of injection pressure. The corresponding equivalence ratio of the overall fuel-air mixture ranges from 0.167 to 0.50. The work features detailed resolution of the flow and flame dynamics in the combustor, which was not typically available in most of the pervious studies. Much of the flow unsteadiness is related not only the cavity, but also to the intrinsic unsteadiness in the flowfield. The interactions between the unsteady flow and flame evolution may cause a large excursion of flow oscillation. The roles of the cavity, injection pressure, and heat release in determining the flow dynamics are examined systematically.
Fractional Step Methods(FSM) are popular in simulation of unsteady incompressible flow. In this study, we demonstrate that FSM, combined with a Volume-Of-Fluid method, can be further applied to simulation of multiphase flow. The interface between the fluids is constructed by the effective least squares volume-of-fluid interface reconstruction algorithm and advected by the velocity using the operator split advection algorithm. To verify our numerical methodology, our results are compared with other authors' numerical and experimental results for the benchmark problems, revealing excellent agreement. The present FSM sheds light on accurate simulation of turbulent multiphase flow which is found in many engineering applications.
In the present paper, the effects of combustion instability on flow structure and flame dynamic with the configurations of burner exit in a model gas turbine combustor are investigated using large eddy simulation(LES). A G-equation flamelet model is employed to simulate the unsteady flame behavior. As a result of mean flow field, the change of divergent half angle(${\alpha}$) at burner exit results in variations in the size and shape of the central toroidal recirculation(CTRZ) as well as flame length by changing corner recirculation zone(CRZ). The case of ${\alpha}=45^{\circ}$ show smaller size and upstream location of CTRZ than that of $90^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$ by the development of higher swirl velocity. The flame length in the case of ${\alpha}=45^{\circ}$ is the most shortest, while that in the case of ${\alpha}=30^{\circ}$ is the longest by the decrease of effective reactive area with the absence of CRZ. Through the analysis of pressure fluctuation, it is identified that the case of ${\alpha}=45^{\circ}$ shows the most largest damping effect of pressure oscillation in all configurations and brings in the noise reduction of 2.97dB, comparing with that of ${\alpha}=30^{\circ}$ having the largest pressure oscillation. These reasons are discussed in detail through the analysis of unsteady phenomena about recirculation zone and flame surface. Finally the effects of flame-acoustic interaction are evaluated using local Rayleigh parameter.
Flows in a ramjet inlet is simulated for the study of the rocket-ramjet transition. The flow is unsteady, two-dimensional axisymmetric, compressible and turbulent. Double time marching method is used for the unsteady calculation and HLLC method is used as a higher order MUSCL method. As for turbulent calculation, $\kappa-\omega$ SST model is used for more accurate viscous calculations. Sinusoidal pressure perturbation is given at the exit and the flow fields at the inlet is studied. The cruise condition as well as the ground test condition are considered. The pressure level for the ground test condition is relatively low and the effect of the pressure perturbation at the combustion chamber is small. The normal shock at the cruise condition is very sensitive to the pressure perturbation and can be easily detached from the cowl when the exit pressure is relatively high. The sudden decrease in the mass flux is observed when the inlet flow becomes subcritical, which can make the inlet incapable. The amplitude of travelling pressure waves becomes larger as the downstream pressure increases, and the wavelength becomes shorter as Mach number increases. The phase difference of the travelling perturbed pressure wave in space is 180 degree.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the prediction accuracy of development large eddy simulation(LES) program for turbulent flow behind a bluff-body. The LES solver was implemented on parallel computer consisting 16 processors. To verify the capability of LES code, the results were compared with those of Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) using standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model as well as experimental data. The results showed that the LES and RANS qualitatively well predicted the experimental results, such as mean axial, radial velocities and turbulent kinetic energy. In the quantitative analysis, however, the LES showed a better prediction performance than RANS. Specially, the LES well described characteristics of the recirculation zones, such as air stagnation point and jet stagnation point. Finally, the unsteady phenomena on the Bluff-body, such as the transition of recirculation region and vorticity, was examined with LES methodology.

Studies are made of the turbulent separation bubble in a two-dimensional semi-infinite blunt plate aligned to a uniform free stream when the oncoming free stream contains a pulsating component. The discrete-vortex method is applied to simulate this flow situations because this approach is effective to represent the unsteady motions of turbulent shear layer and the effect of viscosity near the solid surface. The two key external paramenters in the free stream, i.e., the amplitude of pulsation, A, and the frequency parameter St[=fH/ $U_{1}$], are dealt with in the present numerical computations, A particular frequency gives a minimum reattachment which is related to the drag reduction and the most effective frequency is dependent on the most amplified shedding frequency. The turbulent flow structure is scrutinized. A comparison between the unperturbed flow and the perturbed at the particular frequency of the minimum reattachment length of the separation bubble suggests that the large-scale structure is associated with the shedding frequency and the flow instabilities.
The flight vehicles have cavities such as wheel wells and bomb bays. The flow around a cavity is characterized as unsteady flow because of the formation and dissipation of vortices due to the interaction between the freestream shear layer and cavity internal flow, the generation of shock and expansion waves. Resonance phenomena can damage the structures around the cavity and negatively affect aerodynamic performance and stability. In the present study, numerical analysis was performed for cavity flows by the unsteady compressible three dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with Wilcox's ${\kappa}\;-\;{\omega}$ turbulence model. The cavity has the aspect ratios of 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5 for two-dimensional case, same aspect ratios with the W/D ratio of 2 for three-dimensional case. The Mach and Reynolds numbers are 0.53 and 1,600,000 respectively. The flow field is observed to oscillate in the "shear layer mode" with a feedback mechanism. Based on the SPL(Sound Pressure Level) analysis of the pressure variation at the cavity trailing edge, the dominant frequency was analyzed and compared with the results of Rossiter's formula. The MPI(Message Passing Interface) parallelized code was used for calculations by PC-cluster.
TNumerical simulations of the supersonic impinging jet flows are carried out using the 3D Navier-Stokes code. This paper is focuses on the unsteady flow features associated with stagnation bubbles and other oscillatory behavior. The 3D code was validated by reproducing the results of Lamont's experiments. Computation is carried out for the cases in which the unsteadiness of the plate shock has been observed experimentally. The computational results confirm the oscillatory feature in several kHz. Unsteady calculation with algebraic turbulence model is also performed. It is found that the laminar and turbulent results have some discrepancy in the transient period. However, both of them reveal the oscillatory behavior with similar frequency.
