Direct numerical simulation was carried out to study the vortical structures of the flow around a wall-mounted cube in a channel at Re=1,000 and Re=3,500 based on cubic height and bulk mean velocity. The cubic obstacle is situated in the entrance region of the channel flow where the boundary layers are developing. Upstream of the obstacle, steady and unsteady laminar horseshoe vortex systems are observed at Re=1,000 and Re=3,500, respectively; the near-wake flow is turbulent in both cases. The flow separates at each leading sharp edge of the cube, and subsequent vortex roll-up is noticed in the corresponding free-shear layer. The vortex shedding from the upper leading edge (upper vortices) and that from the two lateral leading edges (lateral vortices) are both quasi-periodic and their frequencies are computed. The upper and lateral vortices further develop into hairpin and Λ vortices, respectively. A series of instantaneous contours of the second invariant of velocity gradient tensor helps us identify spatial and temporal behaviors of the vortices in detail. The results indicate that the length and time scales of the vortical structures at Re=3,500 are much shorter than those at Re:1,000. Correlations between the upper and lateral vortices are also reported.

Effects of rotary oscillation on unsteady laminar flow past a circular cylinder have been investigated in this study. Numerical simulations are performed for the flow at Re=100 in the range of 0.2<$\Omega$<2.5 and 0.02<$St_f$<0.8, where $\Omega$ and $St_f$ are, respectively, the maximum rotation velocity and rotation frequency normalized by the free-stream velocity and cylinder diameter. Results show that rotary oscillation has significant effects on the flow. When the rotation frequency is near the natural vortex-shedding frequency, lock-on occurs and the lock-on frequency range becomes wider as the rotation velocity increases. In a certain range of the rotation frequency and velocity, modulations in the velocity, lift and drag signals occur and this modulation frequency is expressed as a linear combination of the rotation frequency and vortex-shedding frequency. The mean drag and amplitude of the lift fluctuations show local minima near the boundary between the lock-on non and lock-on regions.

To reduce the damage from the coastal disaster such as typhoon and tsunami, a possible option is the eco-friendly approach to minimize the destruction of ecological system. One of feasible idea is the forest for damage prevention artificially arranged along the beach. To understand a precise physics on the flow before and after the forest, we use a CFD method. In this paper, a three-dimensional numerical model has been constructed based on tree cases in a real forest located at Byin-myeon, Seocheon-gun, Chungnam. The CFD computation using a commercial code COMSOL multiphysics is performed for the distribution of real spatial coordinate of each tree. Through this investigation, the CFD techniques are shown to be applied to the research of forest composition plan. The physics in the regime from laminar to turbulent flow is qualitatively explained, and the obtained data are compared one another quantitatively.
For the large scale computation of turbulent flows around an arbitrarily shaped body, a parallel LES (large eddy simulation) code has been recently developed in which domain decomposition method is adopted. METIS and MPI (message Passing interface) libraries are used for domain partitioning and data communication between processors, respectively. For unsteady computation of the incompressible Wavier-Stokes equation, 4-step splitting finite element algorithm [1] is adopted and Smagorinsky or dynamic LES model can be chosen fur the modeling of small eddies in turbulent flows. For the validation and performance-estimation of the parallel code, a three-dimensional laminar flow generated by natural convection inside a cube has been solved. Then, we have solved the turbulent flow around MIRA (Motor Industry Research Association) model at $Re = 2.6\times10^6$, which is based on the model height and inlet free stream velocity, using 32 processors on IBM SMP cluster and compared with the existing experiment.
This describes a numerical method for predicting the incompressible unsteady laminar three-dimensional flows of fluid behaviour with free-surface. The elliptic differential equations governing the flows have been linearized by means of finite-difference approximations, and the resulting equations have been solved via a fully-implicit iterative method. The free-surface is defined by the motion of a set of marker particles and interface behaviour was investigated by way of a 'Lagrangian' technique. Using the GALA concept of Spalding, the conventional mass continuity equation is modified to form a volumetric or bulk-continuity equation. The use of this bulk-continuity relation allows the hydrodynamic variables to be computed over the entire flow domain including both liquid and gas regions. Thus, the free-surface boundary conditions are imposed implicitly and the problem formulation is greatly simplified. The numerical procedure is validated by comparing the predicted results of a periodic standing waves problems with analytic solutions or experimental results from the literature. The results show that this numerical method produces accurate and physically realistic predictions of three-dimensional free-surface flows.

An oil hydraulic line is modeled in which a pipe or two pipes of different size connected in series and terminated in a chamber, i.e. a composite line system. The frequency response characteristics are investigated analytically and experimentally. The theoretical analysis is base on unsteady laminar flow of a viscous compressible fluid. It is generally difficult to obtain exactly the frequency equation of these lines system and its solutions in consideration of viscosity of hydraulic fluid, because the diameters of two pipes and length are different. The effect of the position where the cross-sectional area of changes suddenly, the inner radius of pipe and the volume of terminal chamber on the frequency characteristics of this composite line system are also described.

Laminar vortex shedding behind a circular cylinder with and without splitter plates attached to the circular cylinder at low Reynolds numbers are simulated by solving the unsteady incompressible Navier-Strokes equations. The Strouhal number, lift and drag rapidly change with the splitter plate. Far-field noise from the vortex shedding behind the cylinder is computed using the Lighthill acoustic analogy and the Curle's solution for the Lighthill equation. The acoustic source functions are obtained from the computed near-field velocity and pressure. Numerical results show that the volume quadrupole noise is small at low Mach numbers, compared with the surface dipole noise. Also the amplitude and frequency of the acoustic density fluctuations are varied with the length of splitter plates. The scattering effects at the edge of a splitter plate are considered by using the half-plane Green's function.
A numerical study has been peformed to investigate the flow and mixing characteristics of a chemical injection tank in the chemical and volume control system (CVCS) of Yonggwang 5&6 (YGN 5&6). This study was undertaken to provide a basis for modification of the previous design (YGN 3&4) which gave a lot of difficulties in installation and operation of the chemical injection system during the start-up test because it needs a special reciprocating pump with a high actual head. For the tank of length-to-diameter ratios (L/D) of 1,2 and 3, each with and without a baffle inside, calculation results were obtained by solving the unsteady laminar two-dimensional elliptic forms of governing equations for the mass, momentum and species concentration. Finite-difference method was used to obtain discretized equations, and the SIMPLER solution algorithm, which was developed based on the staggered grid control volume, was employed for the calculation procedure. Results showed that the baffle is very effective in enhancing the mixing in the tank and that a baffle should be installed near the tank entrance in order to 110 chemicals into the reactor coolant system (RCS) within the operating time required.

The pressure suppression pool of BWR(Boiling Water Reactor) is subjected to hydrodynamic impact in the event of a LOCA(Loss of Coolant Accident). The pressure increase in the reactor dry cell would force the existing water of a vent pipe into the suppression pool. When the water is ejected through the pipe opening into the suppression pool, an abrupt downward force is transmitted to the suppression pool floor. Consequently, many structures installed within the pool must be able to withstand these forces. In order to determine the optimum safe locations of the pool structures, numerical analysis have been carried out to investigate the hydrodynamic behavior of the water jet. In the present analysis, a two-dimensional numerical model is utilized to solve transient flow equations.
Analyzing the characteristics of blood flow in the blood vessels is very important to diagnose the circulatory diseases. In order to investigate the hemodynamic characteristics in vivo, the measurements of blood flows inside the extraembryonic arterial and venous blood vessels of chicken embryos were carried out using an in vivo micro-PIV technique. The circulatory diseases are closely related with the formation of abnormal hemodynamic shear stress regions, thereby it is important to get blood velocity and vessel's morphological information according to the vessel configuration and the flow conditions. In this study, the flow images of RBCs in blood vessels were obtained using a high-speed CMOS camera with a spatial resolution of approximately 14.6${\mu}$m${\times}$14.6${\mu}$m in the whole circulation network of blood vessels. The blood flows in the veins and arteries show steady laminar and unsteady pulsatile flow characteristics, respectively. The mean blood flows merged (in veins) and bifurcated (in arteries) smoothly into the main blood vessel and branches, respectively, without any flow separation or secondary flow which accompanying large variation of shear stress. Vorticity was high in the inner regions for both types of vessels, where the radius of curvature varied greatly. The instantaneous flows in the arterial blood vessels showed noticeable pulsatility due to the heart beat, and the main features of the velocity waveforms, including pulsatile shape, retrograde flow, mean velocity, maximum velocity and pulsatile frequency, were significantly dependent on the pulsatile condition which dominates the arterial blood flow. In near future, these in vivo experimental results of blood flow measured in various extraembryonic blood vessels would be very useful to understand the hemodynamic characteristics of human blood flows and various blood flow researches for clinically useful hemodynamic discoveries as well.
