The present paper provides a CFD analysis of diffraction problem for a ship with forward speed using an unsteady RANS simulation method, a WAVIS code. The WAVIS viscous solver adopting a finite volume method has second order accuracy in time and field discretizaions for the RANS equations. A two phase level-set method and a realizable ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model are adopted to compute the free surface and to meet the turbulence closure, respectively. To validate the capability of the present numerical methods for the simulation of an unsteady progressive regular wave, computations are performed for three grid sets with refinement ratio of ${\sqrt{2}}$. The main simulation is performed for a DTMB5512 model with a forward speed in a regular head sea condition. Validation of the present numerical method is carried out by comparing the present CFD results with available unsteady experimental data published in the 2005 Tokyo CFD Workshop: resistance, heave force, pitch moment, unsteady free surface elevations and velocity fields.
Researches in the area of aeroacoustics have been conducted by two methods. In the first method theoretical formula or experimentation are utilized, and in the second method flow field analysis and acoustic analogy are utilized. In contrast to the first method, the second method does not need new experiments for every individual change of flow configurations and conditions, and it can predict their effects by the flow field analysis, which makes the second method preferred than the first one. In this paper numerical analysis to predict noise generated by a turbulent flow about a two dimensional circular cylinder by use of CAA (Computational Aeroacoustics) method is conducted and the results are compared to the available experimental data.

Steady and unsteady numerical simulations are conducted for the comparison with the experiments performed to investigate the ram accelerator flow field by using an expansion tube facility in Stanford University. Wavier-Stokes equations for chemically reacting flows are analyzed by fully implicit and time accurate numerical methods with Jachimowski's detailed chemistry model for hydrogen-air combustion involving 9 species and 19 reaction steps. Although the steady state numerical simulation shows a good agreement with the experimental schlieren and OH PLIF images for the case of $2H_2$+$O_2$+$17N_2$ fails in reproducing the combustion region behind the shock intersection point shown in the case of $2H_2$+$O_2$+$12N_2$ mixture. Therefore, an unsteady numerical simulation is conducted for this case and the result shows all the detailed flow stabilization process. From the result of unsteady numerical simulation, the experimental result seems to be an instantaneous state during the flow stabilization process. The combustion behind the shock intersection point is the result of a normal detonation formed by the intersection of strong oblique shocks that exist at early stage of the stabilization process. At final stage, the combustion region behind the shock intersection point disappears and the steady state result is retained. The time required for stabilization of the reacting flow in the model ram accelerator is found to be very long in comparison with the experimental test time.

The flow in the draft tube cone of Francis turbines operated at partial discharge is a complex hydrodynamic phenomenon where an incoming steady axisymmetric swirling flow evolves into a three-dimensional unsteady flow field with precessing helical vortex (also called vortex rope) and associated pressure fluctuations. The paper addresses the following fundamental question: is it possible to compute the circumferentially averaged flow field induced by the precessing vortex rope by using an axisymmetric turbulent swirling flow model? In other words, instead of averaging the measured or computed 3D velocity and pressure fields we would like to solve directly the circumferentially averaged governing equations. As a result, one could use a 2D axi-symmetric model instead of the full 3D flow simulation, with huge savings in both computing time and resources. In order to answer this question we first compute the axisymmetric turbulent swirling flow using available solvers by introducing a stagnant region model (SRM), essentially enforcing a unidirectional circumferentially averaged meridian flow as suggested by the experimental data. Numerical results obtained with both models are compared against measured axial and circumferential velocity profiles, as well as for the vortex rope location. Although the circumferentially averaged flow field cannot capture the unsteadiness of the 3D flow, it can be reliably used for further stability analysis, as well as for assessing and optimizing various techniques to stabilize the swirling flow. In particular, the methodology presented and validated in this paper is particularly useful in optimizing the blade design in order to reduce the stagnant region extent, thus mitigating the vortex rope and expending the operating range for Francis turbines.
In the present study, the unsteady Couette flow with heat transfer of a dusty viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid under the influence of an exponential decaying pressure gradient is studied without neglecting the Hall effect. The parallel plates are assumed to be porous and subjected to a uniform suction from above and injection from below while the fluid is acted upon by an external uniform magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the plates. The governing equations are solved numerically using finite differences to yield the velocity and temperature distributions for both the fluid and dust particles.

Noise performance of small wind turbines is critical since these are generally installed near the community. In this study, flow noise characteristics of Savonius wind turbines are numerically investigated. Flow field around the turbine are computed by solving unsteady RANS equation using CFD techniques and the radiated noise are predicted by applying acoustic analogy to the computed flow data. Parametric study is then carried out to investigate the effects of operating conditions and geometric design factors of the Savonius wind turbine. Tonal noise components with higher harmonic frequency than the BPF are identified in the predicted noise spectra from a Savonius wind turbine. The end-plates and helical blades are shown to reduce overall noise levels. These results can be used to design low-noise Savonius wind turbines.
The turbulent flow with wake, reattachment and recirculation flow is very important from the viewpoint of engineering. But that is still difficult because of especially the unsteady problems which are related with the vehicle dynamics and the aerodynamics noise. This paper evaluate LES that can analyze about all fluid flow region including the laminar, transition and turbulent. So we compare the results of LES with those of PIV measurement and Reynolds averaging models. In conclusion, LES predicts flow behavior better than Reynolds averaging models.
Experimental investigation of the flow field of supersonic cavity is described. In this research, supersonic cavity is used in chemical laser system. For efficient laser, downstream flow after cavity need to be uniform and clear for pressure recovery system. In previous research, it's known that there's oscillation In cavity and is due to Mach number and L/D ratio. A strong recompression occurs at the after wall and the flow is visibly unsteady. Cavity flow in this research is of the open type, that is, length-to-depth ratio $L/D<10\;at\;M\;=\;3$. Experiment is done with pressure measurement by piezo-type sensor and visualization by Schlirern method. The time-dependent experimental result is compared with computation.
We study the isothermal flow of a dusty viscous incompressible conducting fluid between two types of boundary motions- oscillatory and non-oscillatory, under the influence of gravitational force. Within the frame work of some physically realistic approximations and suitable boundary conditions, closed form solutions were obtained for the velocity profiles and the skin friction of the particulate flow. These results show that for a constant pressure gradient, only the velocity profile of the fluid and the skin friction are unaffected by gravity, while magnetic field is seen to affect both the fluid, particle velocities and the skin friction. Thus, our results are extension of previous results in literature, and graphical demonstration of some these solutions have been presented.
This paper presents numerical works carried out for developing an advanced computational framework for understanding injury- and mortality-inducing flow phenomena in hydropower facilities. Large-eddy simulation (LES) of a circular jet flow is carried out to help interpret the results of recent experiments that exposed live fish to the shear zone of a turbulent jet. The instantaneous flow field of LES is characterized by intense velocity, pressure, and vorticity fluctuations, which could exert forces and moments on a fish considerably larger than those exerted by the same fish exposed to the corresponding steady, time-averaged flow. In this study, also, unsteady modeling of flow in a hydroturbine draft tubewas carried out using a hybrid unsteady RANS/LES, so-called detached-eddy simulation (DES). Results from DES show that the potential for disorientation and excessive residence times of fish within the draft tube is certainly considerable.
