Symptoms of Self-excited Combustion Oscillation and their Detection

  • Monitoring of OH chemiluminescence through an optical fiber was demonstrated to be a useful method in detecting self-excited combustion oscillations. OH chemiluminescence intensity detected by the optical fiber showed mostly excellent agreement with those obtained by high speed CCD camera measurements when combustion oscillations were strong. Symptoms of self-excited combustion oscillation were also studied in order to predict the onset of combustion oscillation before it proceeded to a catastrophic failure. For the purpose, we have found and proposed unique measures to tell the onset of self-excited combustion oscillations based on the careful statistics of fluctuating properties in flames, such as pressure or emission of OH radicals.

  • Steady and unsteady numerical simulations are conducted for the experiments performed to investigate the ram accelerator flow field by using the expansion tube facility in Stanford University. Navier-Stokes equations for chemically reacting flows are analyzed by fully implicit and time accurate numerical methods with Jachimowski's detailed chemistry model for hydrogen-air combustion involving 9 species and 19 reaction steps. Although the steady state assumption shows a good agreement with the experimental schlieren and OH PLIF images for the case of $2H_2$+$O_2$+$17N_2$, it fails in reproducing the combustion region behind the shock intersection point shown in the case of $2H_2$+$O_2$+$12N_2$, mixture. Therefore, an unsteady numerical simulation is conducted for this case and the result shows all the detailed flow stabilization process. The experimental result is revealed to be an instantaneous result during the flow stabilization process. The combustion behind the shock intersection point is the result of a normal detonation formed by the intersection of strong oblique shocks that exist at early stage of the stabilization process. At final stage, the combustion region behind the shock intersection point disappears and the steady state result is retained. The time required for stabilization of the reacting flow in the model ram accelerator is found to be very long in comparison with the experimental test time.

  • 희박 예혼합 스월 연소기의 난류 연소와 화학반응간의 간섭 메커니즘을 파악하기 위하여 Large Eddy Simulation(LES)을 수행하였다. 난류 화염의 유동 특성을 자세히 살펴보기 위하여 비정상 난류 연소 수치해석 기법을 적용하여, 약간의 연료 덩어리가 일차연소영역(Primary combustion zone)에서 빠져나와 선회 방향으로 흘러 국부적 핫스팟(hot spot)을 발생시키며, 이는 large vortical structure를 만들어 내는 것을 관찰 할 수 있었다. 압력변동과 비정상 열 방출 사이의 관계는 공간 및 시간적 Rayleigh parameter에 의해 고찰되었다.

  • Turbocharging is one of the best methods to improve the performance of diesel engines, because of its merits,-power ratio, fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. Most of them in small and medium diesel engines have adopted the pulse turbocharging method with twin entry vaneless radial turbines to maximize the energy utility of exhaust gas. This method requires the high performance of turbine under unsteady flow, and also the matching between turbine and diesel engine is most important. However, it is difficult to match properly between them. Because the steady flow data are usually used for it. Accordingly, it is necessary to catch the characteristics of turbine performance correctly over the wide range of the operation conditions under unsteady flow. In this paper, the characteristics of turbine performance under unsteady flow are represented at varying conditions, such as inlet pressure amplitude, turbine speed and frequence.

소각로내의 폐기물층 연소특성 파악을 위한 연소모델 개발 (A Development of Combustion Model for the Investigation of the Waste Bed Combustion Characteristics in a Waste Incinerator)

  • This study is to establish a waste bed combustion model that can be available to assist the design of incinerators for efficient operation control of municipal waste incinerators. An unsteady one -dimensional bed combustion modeling was developed which incorporates the various sub-process models and solves the governing equations for both gases and solids in the waste bed combustion phenomena. The combustion characteristics and the properties of the combustion gas released from the bed were investigated by using a developed model. Besides, a sub-model which predicts the formation and destruction of nitrogen oxides in the waste bed was also developed as a post-processor for the waste combustion model. It is found that the reduction rate of nitrogen oxides is enhanced in the char layer.

연소실 초기온도 변화에 따른 순간열유속에 관한 연구 (A Study of Hear Flux and Instantaneous Temperature According to the Initial Tamperature of Combustion Chamber in a Constant Volume Combustion Chamber)

  • In the production of internal combustion engines, there has been a move towards the development of high performance engines with improved fuel efficiency, lighter weight and smaller sizes. These trends help to answer problems in engines related to thermal load and abnormal combustion. In order to investigate these problems, a thin film-type probe for instantaneously measuring temperatures has been suggested. A method for manufacturing such a probe was established in this study. The instantaneous surface temperature of a constant volume combustion chamber was measured by this probe and the heat flux was obtained through Fourier analysis. In order to thoroughly understand the characteristics of combustion, the authors measured the wall temperature of the combustion chamber and computed heat flux through a cylinder wall while varying the protrusion height of the probe. For achieving the above goals, a instantaneous temperature probe was developed, thereby making possible the analysis of the instantaneous temperature of wall surface and the detection of unsteady heat flux in the constant volume combustion chamber.

  • Combustion instability is a major issue in design of gas turbine combustors for efficient operation with low emissions. Combustion instability is induced by the interaction of the unsteady heat release of the combustion process and the change in the acoustic pressure in the combustion chamber. In an effort to develop a technique to predict self-excited combustion instability of gas turbine combustors, a new stability analysis method based on the transfer matrix method is developed. The method views the combustion system as a one-dimensional acoustic system with a side branch and describes the heat source as the input to the system. This approach makes it possible to use the advantages of not only the transfer matrix method but also well-established classic control theories. The approach is applied to a simple gas turbine combustion system to demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the approach.

  • HCCI engines have mainly focused on achieving low temperature combustion in order to obtain higher efficiency and lower emission. One of practical difficulties in HCCI combustion is to control the start of combustion and subsequent combustion phasing. The choice of primary reference fuels in HCCI strategy is one of various promising solutions to make HCCI combustion ignition-controlled. The behavior of ignition delay to the frequency variation of sinusoidal velocity oscillation is computationally investigated under HCCI conditions of PRF75 using a reduced chemistry in a counterflow configuration. The second-stage ignition is more delayed as the higher frequency is imposed on nozzle velocity fluctuation whereas the first-stage ignition is not much influenced.

연손실 순간온도 측저에 있어서 돌출높이에 따른 실험적 연구 (Study on the Heat Flux Using Instantaneous Temperature as Height of Probe in the Combustion Chamber)

  • The gasoline engine tends to high performance, fuel economy, small-sized.   • Coal combustion in an iron ore sintering bed is a key parameter that determines quality of the sintered ores and productivity of the process. In this study, effects of the different types of coal coke and anthracite - on the combustion in the iron ore sintering bed are investigated by modeling and experiment. Fuel characteristics of coke and anthracite are observed through a few basic analysis and thermo-gravimetric analysis. It was found that coke has a higher reactivity than anthracite due to the difference of surface area and density. Those characteristics are reflected to the 1-D unsteady simulation of the iron ore sintering bed. Calculation results show that different reactivity of the fuel can affect the bed combustion, which implies the further investigation should be performed for obtaining optimal combustion conditions in the sintering bed.
