  • Long term-storage of citrus oranges after harvest has been hindered mainly by molds The goal of this research was to collect and identify those molds, which would help find a way to extend shelf-life after harvest. During the period of 1994 to 1995, fourteen different strains were isolated and purified from putrefied fruit (Citrus unshiu var.) that was stored at room temperature under open air. The storage disease was caused by the following molds: Penicillium italicum, 25.8%, Monilia candida, 19.8%; Alternaria citri, 18.1%; Mucor hiemalis, 11.0%; Phomopsis citri, 6.6%; Botrytis cinerea. 5.5%; Phoma citricarpa, 3.8%; Glomerella cingulata, 3.8%; P. digitatum, 1.1%; other molds, 4.5%; Most of the strains showed pectinolytic activity and putrefaction. These citrus fruit-putrefying molds will be used as target strains for the control of microorganisms during post-harvest storage.

  • This study was conducted to investigated effects of water relation of mulching and trickle irrigation on the external and internal fruit quality in Satsuma mandarin grafted on trifoliate orange rootstock in a orchard assigned to randomly three groups; whole period of Tyvex mulching (TM), Tyvex mulching with trickle irrigation once a week from October 22 to harvesting season (WM) and non-mulching treatment (NM). The average soil moisture content in the TM was lower than the WM during the time of trickle irrigation from Oct. 21 to Nov. 28. The leaf water potential was at the level of ${\Psi}max$ of -1.5 to -2.5 MPa during whole period of Tyvex mulching treatment but gradually increased at the point of supplement of water. The water and osmotic potential in juice vesicle was decreased by drought but increased again in response to the supply of water in WM. The total soluble solids (TSS) in fruit juice was increased by drought stress, but diminished in response to supply of water after drought. The content of titratible acidity was increased by drought stress but gradually decreased due to supplement of water after drought, reached it at the level of 1%. It was suggested that the accumulation of the total soluble solids compensates the degree of active osmoregulation and the decrease in content of acidity accounts for the fast respiration and water uptake resulted of the water after drought.

The Development and Life Table Parameters of Tetranychus kanzawai (Acarina: Tetranychidae) on Leaves of 'shiranuhi' and Japanese Violet in the Laboratory (한라봉과 왜제비꽃 잎에서 차응애의 발육과 생명표 통계량)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the fitness of Tetranychus kanzawai Kishida on different host plants: young and old leaves of the mandarin orange 'shiranuhi' ((Citrus unshiu × C. sinensis) × C. reticulata), Japanese violet (Viola japonica Langsd.) and kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The development and oviposition experiments were conducted at constant temperatures (20, 25 and 30℃) and a life table parameters were estimated. T. kanzawai could complete it's development on 'shiranuhi' young leaves, japanese violet and kidney bean, while all died during the immature period on 'shiranuhi' old leaves. The total developmental period of T. kanzawai feeding on 'shiranuhi' young leaves was 17.4, 13.4 and 10.2 days at each temperature, respectively, which was longer than 16.1, 9.5 and 7.0 days of kidney bean. The female longevity of T. kanzawai on young leaves of 'shiranuhi' were 19.1, 15.0 and 12.3 days at each temperature, respectively, and there was no significant difference from 22.1, 14.1 and 10.9 days investigated from kidney bean. The fecundity was 18.1, 23.9 and 17.8 eggs per female, which was less than them of japanese violet and kidney bean at each temperature, respectively. As a result of estimating the life table parameters based on the experimental data, intrinsic rate of increase (rm) were significantly different from each other, and appeared in the following order: kidney (0.1542, 0.2563 and 0.3251), japanese violet (0.1087, 0.2007 and 0.2673) and 'shiranuhi' young leaves (0.0868, 0.1002 and 0.1217) at each temperature, respectively. Finally, the management strategy against T. kanzawai in citrus orchards was discussed based on the results.
