  • The numerical procedure for calculating non-uniform residual stress fields by using relieved strain data from incremental hole drilling method is presented. Finite element calculations are described to evaluate the relieved coefficients required for the determination of residual stresses. From the results of simulations it is found that this numerical method is well adopted to measuring non-uniform residual stress in the hole depth range of 0.8 times of the hole diameter from the surface. In order to examine the practicability of this method, the hole drilling procedure for the four point bending test is performed. This method is applied to the measurement of residual stresses in the cold-rolled steel pipe. It is shown that the magnitude of residual stress in the pipe is not negligible when compared with yield stress and the residual stress should be duly considered in designing structures with this pipes.

  • In this work, we have employed the strain gradient plasticity theory to investigate the effect of material size on the deformation behavior in metal forming process. Flow stress is expressed in terms of strain, strain gradient (spatial derivative of strain) and intrinsic material length. The least square method coupled with strain gradient plasticity was used to calculate the components of strain gradient at each element of material. For demonstrating the size effect, the proposed approach has been applied to plane compression process and micro rolling process. Results show when the characteristic length of the material comes to the intrinsic material length, the effect of strain gradient is noteworthy. For the microcompression, the additional work hardening at higher strain gradient regions results in uniform distribution of strain. In the case of micro-rolling, the strain gradient is remarkable at the exit section where the actual reduction of the rolling finishes and subsequently strong work hardening take places at the section. This results in a considerable increase in rolling force. Rolling force with the strain gradient plasticity considered in analysis increases by 20% compared to that with conventional plasticity theory.

  • The nano-scale crystallite sizes of uranium oxide powders in simulated spent fuel were measured by the neutron diffraction line broadening method in order to analyze the sintering behavior of the dry process fuel. The mixed $UO_2$ and fission product powders were dry-milled in an attritor for 30, 60, and 120 min. The diffraction patterns of the powders were obtained by using the high resolution powder diffractometer in the HANARO research reactor. Diffraction line broadening due to crystallite size was measured using various techniques such as the Stokes' deconvolution, profile fitting methods using Cauchy function, Gaussian function, and Voigt function, and the Warren-Averbach method. The non-uniform strain, stacking fault and twin probability were measured using the information from the diffraction pattern. The realistic crystallite size could be obtained after separation of the contribution from the non-uniform strain, stacking fault and twin.

  • Aluminum sheet application to automobile body panels has now become an important objective to meet the requirements of automobile weight reduction. As the Mg content in Al-Mg based alloys increased up to 7.19%, the strength and elongation increased. For instance. Al-7.19Mg alloy had a high strength of 305MPa and a high elongation of 35%. A study was also made to investigate the interrelation between grain size and tensile properties with varying the contents of Mg, Ti and Zr elements and annealing conditions. The yield stress decreased as the grain size increased, which increased the uniform elongation. The strain hardening exponents n increased as the Mg content increased, which depended on the increasing difficulties of the cross slip of dislocation.

  • The fatigue life is predicted on tensile-shear spot weldment made from Al-Mg alloy sheet with thickness of 0.8mm using Mitchell's method and uniform material law by $B{\ddot{a}}umel$ and Seeger based on local strain approach. The fatigue properties of critical HAZ region are estimated from the tensile property using simple hardness method. To predict the fatigue life of spot weldment, the local stresses and strains at the potential critical region are estimated by Neuber's rule. The predicted fatigue life based on uniform material law using HAZ's material properties provides good results within a factor of 3, conservatively.

  • The limiting drawing ratio (LDR) under uniform heating of blanks was measured at the various temperature ranges between 25 and $250^{\circ}C$ by using two different blank shapes, square and circular blanks, and six different blank sizes with the drawing ratios(DR) of 2.4 to 2.9. The galvannealed steel sheet (SCP3CM 60/60) of 0.7mm thickness was used. The LDR at warm forming condition reached 1.2 times of that at room temperature, and the maximum drawing depth reached 1.9 times. The higher temperature was adopted, the more stable and uniform thickness strain distribution was observed.

  • This study examines the wave propagation of the functionally graded polymer composite (FG-PC) nanoplates reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) resting on elastic foundations in the framework of the nonlocal strain gradient theory incorporating both stiffness hardening and softening mechanisms of nanostructures. To this end, the material properties are based on the Halpin-Tsai model, and the expressions for the classical and higher-order stresses and strains are consistently derived employing the second-order shear deformation theory. The equations of motion are then consistently derived using Hamilton's principle of variation. These governing equations are solved with the help of Trial function method. Extensive numerical discussions are conducted for wave propagation of the nanoplates and the influences of different parameters, such as the nonlocal parameter, strain gradient parameter, weight fraction of GNPs, uniform and non-uniform distributions of GNPs, elastic foundation parameters as well as wave number.

  • In order to overcome drawbacks of the advanced high strength steel such as inferior formability and large springback, the hot press forming process(HPF) has been being applied for forming of automotive sheet parts. Good formability and dimensional accuracy without springback as well as good crash performance of final products are the advantages of the HPF process. In this work, a method to characterize the mechanical properties of the HPF steel was developed based on the simple tension test at high temperatures and its finite element analysis, while it was applied to obtain strain rate and temperature dependent flow curves of the HPF steel. The final flow curves were represented by utilizing the Johnson-Cook type equation both in uniform and post-uniform deformation regions.

  • New typology of failure mechanisms for uniform compression fields are presented based on the classical theory of plasticity, in particular th normality rule, and the limit theorem. The concrete is assumed as a rigid-perfectly plastic material obeying the modified Coulomb failure criteria with zero tension cut-off. The failure mechanisms are capable of explaining flexural types of crushing failure in uniaxial uniform compression stress fields which are called struts in truss models. The failure mechanisms consist of sliding failure along straight failure lines or hyperbolic failure curves and rigid body rotation. The failure mechanisms involving straight failure lines are explained by constant strain expansion in the first principal direction and rigid body rotation motion. The failure mechanisms presented are applied to the explanation of bond failure of bar combined with concrete crushing failure and flexural crushing failure of concrete.
