  • In this study, the effect of pressure type and foaming agent on the microstructural change of Al foam produced by powder compact processing was investigated. Better foaming characteristic is easily obtained from extrusion process with strong plastic deformation and preheating than that by uniaxial pressing with preheating. In current powder compact foaming process using TiH2/MgH2 mixture as a foaming agent, a temperature of 670℃ and addition of 30% MgH2 in TiH2 foaming agent was chosen as the most suitable foaming condition. The aluminum (Al) foams with maximum porosity of around 70%, relatively regular pore size and distribution were successfully produced by means of the powder metallurgy method and extrusion process.

  • The size of various alumina ceramics used in semiconductor and display industry is required to increase with increase in wafer and panel size. In this research, large alumina ceramics were fabricated by uniaxial pressing, cold isostatic pressing and filter pressing with commercial powder and thereafter sintering at $1600^{\circ}C$ in gas furnace. The large alumina ceramics exhibited dense microstructure corresponding to 98.5% of theoretical density and 99.8% of high purity. The impurities and microstructural defects of the alumina were found to influence the resistance and dielectric properties. The volume resistances in these four aluminas were almost the same while the pure alumina was higher value. The dielectric constant, dielectric loss and dielectric strength of aluminas were placed within the range of 10.3~11.5, 0.018~0.036, and 10.1~12.4 kV/mm, respectively.

  • The dependence of green and sintered densities of Zirconia-Toughened Alumina ($ZTA:\;Al_2O_3/\;15\;vol{%}\;ZrO_2$) on the properties of spray-dried granules was studied thoroughly to establish the optimum compaction condition leading to high reproducibility in the light of sintered density. The sphericity, mean size, degree of hollow occurrence and moisture content of spray-dried granules were largely different in between the granule containing binder and the ones with no binder. The effect of these differences in the characteristic of granules on the compaction behavior was examined in terms of the compaction pressure from 80 MPa to 120 MPa 10 MPa increment and the compaction method, i.e., uniaxial and cold isostatic pressing. This work confirmed that the reproducibility of sintered density caused by the variation of granule property could be improved by the optimization of compaction process. The variation of sintered density was controlled within 1 % deviation by compacting the granules under a relatively low pressure of 80 MPa in an uniaxial forming and subsequent cold isostatic pressing at high pressure of 500 MPa.

  • We fabricated Ni-substrate for YBCO coated conductors and evaluated the effects of pressing and annealing temperature and time on texture. Ni substrate was fabricated by powder metallurgy technique and compacts were prepared by applying uniaxial or isostatic pressure. The texture of substrate made by applying cold isostatic pressure (CIP) was stronger than that by uniaxial pressure which we attribute to the fact that the CIP method provided higher density and more uniform density distribution. It was observed that the substrate annealed at 400 C showed both retained texture and recrystallized texture. On the other hand, the texture of substrate significantly improved at annealing temperature above 500 C, forming strong 4-fold symmetry, [111] II ND texture, and FWHM of 9∼10 . It is to be noted that the degree of texture was almost independent of annealing temperature (500∼1000 C) and annealing time(1∼54 min, at 1000 C). EBSD and AFM analysis indicated that 99% of grain boundaries was low angle grain boundary and RMS was approximately 3 nm, respectively. Development of strong cube texture and high fraction of low angle grain boundary of Ni-substrate made by powder metallurgy technique in our study is considered to be suitable for the application of YBCO coated conductors.

It is to be noted that the degree of texture was almost independent of annealing time and the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of in-plane and out-of-plane was measured to be in the range of 9.55$^{\circ}$-10.53$^{\circ}$ and 8.57$^{\circ}$-9.85$^{\circ}$, respectively. • Alloy 617, Ni-22Cr-12Co-9Mo base oxide dispersion strengthened alloy was fabricated by using mechanical alloying, hot isostatic pressing and hot rolling. Uniaxial tensile tests were performed at room temperature and at $700^{\circ}C$. Compared with the conventional Alloy 617, ODS alloy showed much higher yield strength and tensile strength, but lower elongation. Fracture surfaces of the tensile tested specimens were investigated in order to find out the mechanism of fracture mode at each test temperature. Grain adjustment during tensile deformation was analyzed by electron backscattered diffraction mapping, inverse pole figures and TEM observation.

  • Mn-Zn ferrite powders were prepared by alcoholic dehydration, using coprecipitation method. Then the effects of organic dispersant and polymeric binder concentration on stability and casting of slurry were discussed. Citric acid, the organic dispersant and polyvinylacohol(PVA), the non-ionic binder, were selected as additives of slurry. With variation of concentration of water, citric acid and polyvinylalcohol(PVA), optimum forming conditions were determined from viscosity and density. To compare with dry process, density and microstructure of sintered body formed by uniaxial die pressing were observed.

  • The present work studies the influence of high-energy milling (HEM) and sintering cycle of Ti and Al powders on the obtainment of TiAl. This study shows that HEM modifies the diffusion processes during the sintering stage. The samples were obtained by cold uniaxial and isostatic pressing, pre-sintered at different temperatures, and heated up to the sintering temperature. This study also shows the effect of powder additions processed by HEM on the sintering behavior of elemental Ti and Al powders.

  • Densification behavior of various metal and ceramic powder was investigated under cold compaction. The Cap model was proposed based on the parameters obtained from axial and radial deformation of sintered metal powder compacts under uniaxial compression and volumetric strain evolution. For ceramic powder, the parameters were obtained from deformation of green powder compacts under triaxial compression. The Cap model was implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS) to compare with experimental data for densification behavior of various metal and ceramic powder under cold compaction.

  • We report on the mechanical and structural properties of nanocrystalline 8% and 10% mol yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) obtained using mechanical alloying (MA). The as-milled powders show a body-centered cubic structure with grain sizes in the nanometer scale. After uniaxial pressing and sintering the compacts exhibit good mechanical properties. We discuss the correlation of these enhanced properties with the microstructural changes induced by heat treatment.
