The behavior of clays subjected to Repeated loading has been shown to be very different from the behavior under a single load application. Especially the behavior of pore water pressure is Qf considerable importance. The objective of this work is to experimentally study the stress-strain characteristics of clays, and this study includes the pore water pressure which is built up during the load repetition. For this study, the samples were consolidated isotropically in the triaxial cell during 24 hours, .and monotonic strain controlled triaxial test is carried out by uslng the tests of Compression failure, Cycled at failure, and Nonfailure equilibrium on remoulded samples under undrained .condition . Consequently there exists a critical level of repeated loading which seperates the behavior of a particular sample into two distinctly different patterns.
This paper presents a series of conventional undrained triaxial compression tests conducted to determine the effect of both tire crumbs and cement addition on Narli sand specimens. The tire crumb contents and cement contents were 3%, 7%, 15%; and 1%, 3%, 5% by dry weight of the sand specimens respectively. Specimens were prepared at about 35% relative density, cured during overnight (about 17 hours) for artificially bonding under a 100 kPa effective stress (confining pressure of 500 kPa with a back pressure of 400 kPa), and then sheared. Deviatoric stress-axial strain, pore water pressure-axial strain behavior, and Young's modulus of the specimens at various mixture ratios of tire crumb/cement/sand were measured. Test results indicated that the addition of tire crumb to sand decreases Young's modulus, deviatoric stress and brittleness, and increase pore water pressure generation. The addition of cement to sand with tire crumbs increases deviatoric stress, Young's modulus, and changes its ductile behavior to a more brittle one. The results suggest that specimen formation in the way used here could reduce the tire disposal problem in not only economically, and environmentally, but also more effectively beneficial way for some geotechnical applications.
A large diameter sampler that can take undisturbed samples from soft ground was developed by KICT. In order to compare the quality of samples taken by the sampler with those of the traditional piston sampler, a series of laboratory tests were performed. Samples were taken at different sites such as Incheon, Gimhae, Yangsan and Busan. The results showed that the values of unconfined compression strength, secant modulus, pre-consolidation pressure, undrained shear strength, and shear modulus exhibited higher in samples taken by the large scale sampler. Strains at shear failure and volumetric strains were low for the new sampler. It was proved from the comparison that better quality samples could be obtained by the KICT sampler.
This paper proposes a new procedure carrying out a series of consolidated-undrained triaxial tests with a specimen. In this procedure high confining pressure applied to the specimen keeps constant during the test and each stage of consolidation can be controlled by partial drainage. With this procedure the test time is remarkably reduced by performing a series of triaxial tests with a single specimen. In order to verify the appliesbility of the procedure, standard triaxial compression tests and conventional multi -stage triaxial testy are performed for both undisturbed and disturbed samples and the results are compared with those of the proposed procedure. The comparison shows that strength parameters determined by the proposed procedure are well agreed with those of the other tests and thus it can be said that the procedure is very effective and practical in determining strength parameters.
An elastoplastic model for structured clays, which is formulated based on the fact that the difference in mechanical behavior of structured and reconstituted clays is caused by the change of fabric in the post-yield deformation range, is present in this paper. This model is developed from an elastoplastic model for overconsolidated reconstituted clays, by considering that the variation in the yield surface of structured clays is similar to that of overconsolidated reconstituted clays. However, in order to describe the mechanical behavior of structured clays with precision, the model takes the bonding and parabolic strength envelope into consideration. Compared with the Cam-clay model, only two new parameters are required in the model for structured clays, which can be determined from isotropic compression and triaxial shear tests at different confining pressures. The comparison of model predictions and results of drained and undrained triaxial shear tests on four different marine clays shows that the model can capture reasonable well the strength and deformation characteristics of structured clays, including negative and positive dilatancy, strain-hardening and softening during shearing.
Preloading of soft clays is a common ground stabilization method for improvement of compressibility and the undrained shear strength. The waiting period under preload is a primary design criterion controlling the degree of improvement obtained. Upon unloading the overconsolidation attained with respect to actual loads defines the long term performance. This paper presents a laboratory study for investigation of creep behavior of Famagusta Bay alluvial soft soil preloaded under various effective stresses for analysis of long term performance based on the degree of overconsolidation. Traditional one-dimensional consolidation tests as well as modified creep tests are performed on reconstituted soft specimens. Compressibility parameters are precisely backcalculated using one dimensional consolidation theory and the coefficient of creep is determined using the traditional Cassagrande method as well as two modified methods based on log cycles of time and the inflection of the creep curve. The test results indicated that the long term creep can be successfully predicted considering the proposed method. The creep coefficients derived as part of this method can also be related to the recompression index (recompression index, swelling index) considering the results of the testing method adopted in this study.
The Paper describes the observed behaviour in the undrained triaxial condition of marine clays remoulded at various different levels of factors, to find out the effects of restricted factors on the stress-strain characteristics. The conventional triaxial compression tests $({\sigma}1>{\sigma}2={\sigma}3)$ were carried out on the 50mm in diameter and 100mm long cylindrical specimens of Gun-san bay mud under controlled various moisture content, density, axial strain rate and passing on No. 200 sieve. Significant conclusions from this study are; 1. The compressible deviator stress at failure of pure marine clay was observed to increase with the decrease of moulding moisture content. 2. The compressible deviator stress at failure increased with the increasing of moulding dry density. 3. The interaction between moisture content and density on the stress-strain characteristics of marine clay was remarkedly significant, as the result of factorial experimental method. 4. The effect of axial strain rate on stress-strain behaviour was unsignificant in marine clay and but the secant moduli could be pronounced on a slight decreasing with increase of the strain rate. 5. With the increasing of the passing on No. 200 sieve, the deviator stress increased regularly. 6. The multiple regression equation could be modeled for the prediction of stress or strain and the comparison with experimental results relatively proved the accuracy.

A large number of small particles may surround large gravels which are non-contact and dispersed within the ground. The strength of such soil may be influenced by the mechanical properties of a few coarse gravels. A specimen or gravel size can impact the shear characteristics of sand with dispersed gravels. In this study, the size of gravel and specimen varies and its effect on shear characteristics of a granular soil was evaluated. Five sizes of gravels with 7, 12, 15, 18, and 22 mm were used repeatedly and inserted in the middle of each compacted layer. A specimen consists of five or ten equal layers depending on gravel size, which is 5 cm or 10 cm in diameter and 10 cm or 20 cm in height. An embedded gravel ratio by weight is 3% and constant for all cases with gravel. After consolidation, a series of undrained triaxial compression tests under three confining pressures was performed on sand with dispersed gravels. The maximum deviator stress of a specimen with 10 cm in diameter was at average 30% higher than that with 5 cm in diameter and increased up to 90% for a specimen with gravel. When a gravel size of 7 and 12 mm used, the maximum deviator stress of a specimen with 10 cm in diameter was higher than that of one without gravel, whereas the maximum deviator stress of a specimen with 5 cm was higher or lower than that without gravel. The gravel size and specimen diameter influenced the undrained behavior of sand. The maximum deviator stress of a specimen with gravel either increased or decreased compared to that without gravel, depending on the ratio of gravel size to specimen diameter, 1/5.
In this study, the effect of different silt contents on the shear characteristics of silty sands was evaluated. Two series of triaxial compression tests were performed on the cylindrical specimens of compacted Nakdong river sand with 10% and 30% silt contents under unconsolidated undrained condition. All identical specimens were prepared to compact with same initial water content for five layers and saturated using control panel and then sheared under initial effective confining pressure, 100 to 400kPa. All specimens exhibited a strain softening tendency after failure in stress-strain curves and deviator stresses of specimens with 10% silt content were greater than those of specimens with 30% silt content. Pore water pressures of specimens with 10% silt content were observed negative(i.e. swelling) due to increasing void ratio after failure but those of specimens with 30% silt content were shown only positive. The behavior of compacted cylindrical specimens with low silt content was more dilative than that of high silt content. Peak deviator stresses decreased as increasing silt content and peak pore water pressures increased as increasing silt content.

In residual soils, large particles such as rock fragments or gravel are surrounded by sand or clay. The strength of such granular mixtures can be controlled by the concentration of fine or coarse grains. The percentage by weight, size or shape of gravel in the mixture that can control the strength of the mixture has not been clearly determined for various granular mixtures. In this study, the effect of dispersed gravels on the shear characteristics of sand was evaluated. Large and small gravels were inserted in the middle of each layer with moist Nakdong River sand and compacted into a cylindrical sample with five equal layers. Embedded gravel ratios by weight were 0, 3, 9, and 14%. After consolidation, a series of undrained triaxial compression tests was performed on Nakdong River sand with dispersed gravels. Maximum deviator stresses of the Nakdong River sand with large gravels decrease up to 38% as a percentage of embedded gravels increases. Such strength degradation decreases as a confining pressure increases. The maximum deviator stress increases as the percentage by weight of small gravel increases; at 3 or 9% of gravel weight it slightly increases but at 14% of gravel weight it increases up to 34%.
