Mechanical Charateristics of Remolded Clay and Simulation of Aging Effect with Curing Condition (양생조건에 따른 연대효과의 재현과 재압밀점토의 역학특성)

  • In this study, the clay samples collected in the area Mokpo carry out laboratory soil test. Under three different curing $temperature-20^{\circ}C,\;50^{\circ}C,\;80^{\circ}C$ and 4 terms of curing day -1day, 7days, 14days, 40days for each, the remolded and reconsolidated samples had been made. To find out an aging effects and geotechnical characteristics between undisturbed samples and reconsolidated samples, laboratory tests were preformed. In the results, it was found that mechanical properties of undisturbed natural samples were similar to high temperature reconsolidation clay. The curing temperature influence on simulating aging effect more than the curing day does and the best curing condition are $80^{\circ}C$, 27days.

  • A large diameter sampler (KICT-type large diameter sampler) was developed to take undisturbed samples from not only soft ground but also sandy and weathered ground. The KICT-type large diameter sampler was manufactured with the principle of triple core barrel sampling. In this study, the applicability to offshore ground sampling of the KICT-type large diameter sampler was confirmed at Inchoen Port construction site. And, in order to compare the quality of samples taken by the sampler with that of the traditional piston sampler, a series of laboratory tests were performed. From the test results, the samples taken by the KICT-type large diameter sampler showed higher quality than the traditional thin-walled tube samples.

A Characteristics of Shear Strength and Deformation of Decomposed Granite Soil (화강토의 전단강도 및 변형특성)

  • Since decomposed granite soil shows various characteristics of shear behavior dependent on initial conditions such as weathering degree and grain breakage, it is nacessary to invert ligate stress -strain relationship and changes of shear characteristics for different initial conditions. Associated with abovefnentioned view, direct shear tests, and triaxial compression tutsts(Ef, CD) were carried out in this study for undisturbed and disturbed compacted weathered granite samples obtained from 4 construction work sites with the various weathering degree and components of parent rocks. The deformation behavior of undisturbed samples under small confining stress shows hardening to softening, which is similar to that of over nsolidated clay whereas disturbed weathered granite soils do hardeningfonstant regardless of weathering degree, which is also similar to sedimentary clay. Conventional direct shear-tests for undisturbed samples show a tendency to overestimate cohesion. It is possidle to approximate stress ratio(q/p') and volumetric increment ratio(dv/ds) in the triaxital compression tests by an equation, ($dv/d\varepsilon,=\alpha(M-\eta))$ irrespective of moisture content, weathering degree and disturbance.

The Evaluation on the exiting greens of Hwasan Country Club by undisturbed Soil Core Analysis (토양 코아 분석을 통한 화산 골프장의 조성된 그린에 대한 평가)

  • The subsurface environment of the root zone area can set the stae for "do or die" of the turfgrass plant. The good condition of the greens is verified by their physical properties. Therefore, this study was carried to evaluate on the existing green of Hwasan C.C. by undisturbed soil Core Anaysis. We completed the ISTRC SYSTEM BenchMarking of the undisturbed core samples taken from Green #1, Green #5, Green #9-"Best" area, and Green #9-"Stressed" area for the Hwasan C.C.. It was also our understanding that the greens were in "good" to "very good" conditioni. THe exception might be Green #9-"Stress" area, which was the stressed area. The stressed area was confined to a ridge across Green #9. The organic content test results comfirmed the development of organic layering in depth 0-2.5cm. For the amount of compaction in the upper root zones and te development of the green's respective organic layers, the infiltration rates were high in Green #1, Green #5, and Green #9 "Stressed" area. The depicted aerificaton hole might be the probable cause of the relatively high infiltraton rate. Green #9-"Best" area had a tested infiltration rate of 18.75cm/hr. Either this area had not been aerified, or the undisturbed sample did not contain a aerification cavity. The water retention capacity of the undisturbed samples was good. When the greens were first constructed, the original root zone mix had been relatively low water retention properties. And the bulk density and the porosity of the undisturbed samples were good. In the result, all the greens were similar except for the infiltration. Thus, we supposed that Green #9-"Stressed" area might be ainly influenced by the amount of irrigation water and the configuration of the green's surface. There had been a reduction in the amount of irrigation water as the water retention capacity in the greens was promoted. Especially, it had gradually become more of a problem as the green had matured in Green #9-"Stressed" area. Because Green #9-"Stressed" area was a ridge area. The reduction in the amount of irrigation water might be the probable cause of the stress in Green #9-"Stressed" area. Our final observation related to the soil texture and the particle size distribution of the sand. Though and sand contant of all the tested greens were good, the gravel content of them exceeded ISTRC Guidelines. In particle size distribution of the sand, the very coarse and the coarse content of all the tested greens exceeded, but the rest was insufficient. The stability is a function of the material retained on the 0.25mm mesh screen. But, the content of all the tested greens was very insufficient. Though all the greens was serviceable, the coarse root zone sands, such as the sand in the tested greens, tended to be "unstable". Thus, we recommend using a topdressing/aerification sand which should be more in line with ISTRC/USGA Guidelines.;unstable". A Study on the Sample Characteristics Obtained from Large Diameter Sampler and Piston Sampler (피스톤 샘플러와 대구경 샘플러로 채취한 시료의 특성에 관한 연구)

  • A large diameter sampler that can take undisturbed samples from soft ground was developed by KICT. In order to compare the quality of samples taken by the sampler with those of the traditional piston sampler, a series of laboratory tests were performed. Samples were taken at different sites such as Incheon, Gimhae, Yangsan and Busan. The results showed that the values of unconfined compression strength, secant modulus, pre-consolidation pressure, undrained shear strength, and shear modulus exhibited higher in samples taken by the large scale sampler. Strains at shear failure and volumetric strains were low for the new sampler. It was proved from the comparison that better quality samples could be obtained by the KICT sampler.

Analysis of Soil Samples Obtained from Piston Sampler and Large Diameter Sampler (피스톤 샘플러와 대구경 샘플러를 이용한 시료 샘플의 공학적 분석)

  • A large diameter sampler was developed to take undisturbed samples from not only soft ground but also sandy and weathered ground. The large diameter sampler which was developed in Korea Institute of Construction Technology(KICT-type large diameter sampler) was manufactured based on the principle of triple core barrel sampling. A specially designed cutting device was used to cut and contain various kinds of samples in the sampler during a sampling and retrieval procedure. By adjusting the stiffness of the spring located at the top of the sampler, the distance between the cutting shoe and auger can be controlled in accordance with the ground condition. In order to investigate the applicability of the developed sampler and compare the quality of the samples taken by the sampler with that by the traditional thin-walled tube sampler, samples were taken at various sites according to the ground condition. And a series of laboratory tests such as the unconfined compress ion test, triaxial compression test, oedometer test, large diameter Rowe cell consolidation test (D: 150 mm) were performed. The test results showed that the samples by the KICT-type large diameter sampler show higher quality than the samples by the thin-walled tube sampler. And the validity and applicability of the developed KICT-type large diameter sampler was confirmed accordingly.

Combined resonant column and cyclic triaxial tests to estimate the dynamic behavior of undisturbed saturated clayey soils of Adapazarı, Turkey

  • Turkey is one of the most important earthquake regions in Europe. This region has been exposed to many earthquakes of different magnitudes from past to present. It is of great importance to determine the dynamic properties of the soils for structures to be built in earthquake zones. In order to minimize the damages that may occur, the behavior of the soils under repeated loads should be known and taken into consideration in the design. In this study, 4 different point borings were taken near active fault lines in the North Anatolian fault zone (NAFZ). In order to determine the dynamic parameters of soils, both dynamic triaxial (TRX) and resonant column (RC) tests were carried out on undisturbed samples at every 5 m. As a result of the experiments, Vs and Gmax values were obtained from the field and differences were determined. The dynamic behavior of the soil was examined at varying depths with the comparison of reference models in the literature and compatible results were obtained. Finally, the behavior at the transition region is highlighted. As a result, three shear modulus and dumping ratio models have been proposed for clay soils to be used in different soil conditions.

  • To investigate the liquefaction potential of sands, a series of untrained cyclic triaxial compression tests is carried out on the samples of Ottawa, Joomoonjin, Hn river and Hongseung sands. The constitutive equations of sands are derived to explain the mechanical behavior of sands under cyclic stresses, and are applicable to liquefaction analysis. The following results are obtainded in this study. 1. Sands with the lower confining pressure or relative density are to be easily liquefied, and when the amplitude of cyclic stress are large, liquefaction takes places over only a few cycles. 2. Stress ratio, porewater pressure ratio and cyclic shear strains are to be good criteria to evaluate liquefaction potential of sands. 3. Hongseung sands which contains some silty clay shows higher dynamic properties than other sands. 4. The dynamic behaviors of undisturbed Hongseung sand are about same as those of dense sands. It is noted that undisturbed Hongseung sand shows higher liquefaction potential than the samples made by pluviation under same relative density, 5. The constitutive equations of soils under cyclic loads are developed based on the theory of elasto-plasticity, logarithmic stress-strain rela'tionship, non-associated flow rule and the concept of the boundary surface. The derived equations is applicable to predict the behavior of sands under cyclic loads and liquefaction potential with a higher accuracy. 6. Based on results of the study it may be concluded that cracks of the foundations and dislocation of the structures at Hongseung earthquakes(Oct. 7, 1978, Richter scald 5.2) are not brought by the liquefaction process.

  • We have remolded marine clay sample collected along the vertical and horizontal directions and investigated the characteristics of the consolidation constants by SCT and CRSC methods. We have studied also on consolidation chracteristics and application for weathered granite soil using SCT and CRSC methods for undisturbed and disturbed samples. As the result, values of pre-consolidation stress, compression index, excessive pore pressure, pore water pressure ratio of the marine-clay were different due to different test methods(SCT and CRSC) and sampling directions(vortical and horizontal directions). Disturbed and undisturbed samples of the weathered granite soil have showed similar change aspect like marine clay during over-consolidatied and normally consolidatied stages.

An Experimental Study on Depositional Environments and Consolidation Properties of Shihwa Deposits (시화지역 퇴적층의 퇴적환경과 압밀특성에 관한 연구)

  • Consolidation properties of Shihwa deposits were analysed by means of depositional environments. Depositional environments including particle size distributions, sediment structures, geochemical properties, porewater chemistries and carbon age dating were analysed using undisturbed samples retrieved successively from a boring hole in the study area. Laboratory oedometer tests and anisotropic consolidated triaxial tests (CKoUC) for undisturbed samples were performed to examine the overconsolidation phenomena. Based on the results of analysis of depositional environments, it was found that the upper silt/clay mixed layer was deposited under marine condition while underlying sand and clay layers were deposited under fluvial condition. Planar laminated structures of silts and clays were dominant in marine deposits. Although there was no clear evidences that geological erosion had occurred in marine deposits, overconsolidation ratios of the upper marine samples were greater than unity Stress Paths of the upper marine samples behaved similarly to those of normally consolidated clays. Data plotted in stress state charts showed that the marine deposits were normally consolidated in geological meaning. These apparent overconsolidation of the marine deposits can be explained by the structures i.e. chemical bonding due to the difference of the rate of deposition, not by geological erosions and ground water fluctuations.
