  • In the downstream areas of the Nakdong river, Pusan clays are commonly found and thickness may reach to maximum of 100m. From geological point of view, Pusan clay are characterized as holocene clays, deposited for approximately 20,000 years ago. Recently, there have been many construction projects based on these soft ground areas. It is needed to know clearly soil properties of the areas for design and safety analysis, especially undrained shear strength of soft clays. However, Pusan clay have not been studied systematically because the clay layers are usually very deep, having high sensitivity characteristic. In this study, undisturbed UD samples obtained from the downstream areas of the Nakdong river were researched using laboratory tests (CthUE, CKcUC, CIUC, UU and UC) and in-situ tests (Field Vane, CPTu). The undrained shear strength characteristics of the samples were depicted using stress-strain relationship.

  • Recently, a new seismic probe, called "MudFork", has been developed and can be utilized for accurate and easy measurements of shear wave velocities of cohesive soils. To expand its use to estimate undrained shear strength and density, a preliminary investigation to correlate these properties with shear wave velocity was attempted. Cone penetration tests and a seismic test, using MudFork, were performed at a silty soil site near Incheon, Korea. Also, undisturbed samples were obtained using thin-wall tube samplers, and the shear wave velocities and undrained shear strengths of the samples were measured in the laboratory. A simple linear relationship between shear strength and shear wave velocity was obtained, and a tentative relationship between density and shear wave velocity was also defined.

  • Micromorphological features of Bhorizon of Honam series were investigated by means of thin sections of natural undisturbed, oriented soil samples. Thin sections show that the B horizons have argillic accumulations. Argillic horizon was developed at the utmost in B21t horizon. Channel, and skew plane cutans were identified in B21t horizon and stress cutans are presented in B24t horizon. Such a continuous oriented argillans related to channels and skew planes decreased with increasing depth.

  • The permeability behavior of Ariake clays has been investigated by constant rate of strain (CRS) consolidation tests with vertical or radial drainage. Three types of Ariake clays, namely undisturbed Ariake clay samples from the Saga plain, Japan (aged Ariake clay), clay deposit in shallow seabed of the Ariake Sea (young Ariake clay) and reconstituted Ariake clay samples using the soil sampled from the Saga plain, were tested. The test results indicate that the deduced permeability in the horizontal direction ($k_h$) is generally larger than that in the vertical direction ($k_v$). Under odometer condition, the permeability ratio ($k_h/k_v$) increases with the vertical strain. It is also found that the development of the permeability anisotropy is influenced by the inter-particle bonds and clay content of the sample. The aged Ariake clay has stronger initial inter-particle bonds than the young and reconstituted Ariake clays, resulting in slower increase of $k_h/k_v$ with the vertical strain. The young Ariake clay has higher clay content than the reconstituted Ariake clay, resulting in higher values of $k_h/k_v$. The microstructure of the samples before and after the consolidation test has been examined qualitatively by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image and semi-quantitatively by mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) tests. The SEM images indicate that there are more cut edges of platy clay particles on a vertical plane (with respect to the deposition direction) and there are more faces of platy clay particles on a horizontal plane. This tendency increases with the increase of one-dimensional (1D) deformation. MIP test results show that using a sample with a larger vertical surface area has a larger cumulative intruded pore volume, i.e., mercury can be intruded into the sample more easily from the horizontal direction (vertical plane) under the same pressure. Therefore, the permeability anisotropy of Ariake clays is the result of the anisotropic microstructure of the clay samples.

  • Purpose: Considering the rising frequency of earthquakes in Korea, it is crucial to revise the rainfall thresholds for landslide triggering following earthquake events. This study was conducted to provide scientific justification and preliminary data for adjusting rainfall thresholds for landslide early warnings after earthquakes through soil physical experiments. Method: The study analyzed the change in soil shear strength by direct shear tests on disturbed and undisturbed samples collected from cut slopes. Also, The study analyzed the soil strength parameters of remolded soil samples subjected to drying and wetting conditions, focusing on the relationship between the degree of saturation after submergence and the strength parameters. Result: Compaction water content variation in direct shear tests showed that higher water content and saturation in disturbed samples led to a significant decrease in cohesion (over 50%) and a reduction in shear resistance angle (1~2°). Additionally, during the ring shear tests, the shear strength was observed to gradually decrease once water was supplied to the shear plane. The maximum shear strength decreased by approximately 65-75%, while the residual shear strength decreased by approximately 53-60%. Conclusion: Seismic activity amplifies landslide risk during subsequent rainfall, necessitating proactive mitigation strategies in earthquake-prone areas. This research is anticipated to provide scientific justification and preliminary data for reducing the rainfall threshold for landslide initiation in earthquake-susceptible regions.

  • Weathered granite zone exists in most regions of Korea and it is often used as a bearing stratum of geotechnical structures. So it is very important to estimate the characteristics of weathered granite zone. SPT (Standard penetration test) is usually performed to investigate the characteristics of the weathered zone because undisturbed samples suitable for laboratory testing are hardly retrieved. PMT (Pressuremeter test) can reliably evaluate the in situ stress-strain behavior, but it is rarely conducted because of their high cost and time-consuming procedure. In this study, the correlation between the SPT-N values and the PMT results, obtained from the weathered granite zone, was analyzed. Empirical equations for pressuremeter modulus (Em) and limit pressure (PL) were suggested and compared with the previous research.

  • The permeability coefficient is one of the fundamental engineering properties of soft clays. Consolidation process as well as migration of pollutants in soil are affected the permeability coefficient, which generally decreases with the reduction in void ratio during consolidation. After Kozeny(1927) and Carman(1956), many researchers have proposed the relationships between void ratio and permeability in such forms as; (1) log e - log k(1+e), (2) e - log k, or (3) log e - log k. Constant rate of strain (CRS) tests was performed with undisturbed samples obtained at Kunsan and Kimhae deposits, which are representative Korean marine clay. From the results of the tests, the relationships were found valid for Kunsan and Kimhae clays. The experimental correlation $C_k=0.5e_o$ was satisfied with Kimhae clay but not with Kunsan clay.

  • The accurate evaluation of settlement is important to every steps in the constructions involving soft soils. Relating with those constructions, especially, it has been emphasized recently that the influnce of secondary settlement is important. The ratio of $C_a/C_c$ and the surcharging tests can be applied collaboratively to predicting and reducing secondary consolidation. A series of incremental loading consolidation test and surcharging tests for undisturbed samples of Kunsan clay were performed in this study. As a result of the tests, the ratio of $C_a/C_c$ for the clay was found to be 0.0329. Also, the relationship between void ratio and $t/t_p$ was shown to be linear. Accordingly, the secondary compression index, $C_a for a long term loading had a constant value regardless of time. When the total surcharge ratio was 0.4 and the dissipation ratio of excessive porewater pressure was in the range from 80% to 100%, secondary settlement was effectively reduced for Kunsan clay.

  • In this paper, the testing cell and the related theory far the interpretation of constant rate of strain (CRS) consolidation test results in case of radial drainage were developed. The proposed method makes it possible to evaluate consolidation characteristics of clayey soil rapidly and accurately. To investigate the application of the developed testing device and theory, CRS consolidation tests and incremental loading(IL) tests in radial drainage condition with remolded and undisturbed samples were performed. Comparisons of consolidation parameters from consolidation curves including coefficient of consolidation values show the applicability and the reliability of the suggested method. The experimental data were compared with additional vertical drainage CRS tests and IL tests, and then were analyzed considering the effect of the drainage direction. In addition, the effect of excess pore water pressure generated during CRS consolidation test was investigated.

  • A series of cyclic triaxial tests were carried out on undisturbed samples to clarify the cyclic behavior of Bangkok(Ransit) soft clay. Based on the test results obtained from the cyclic tests employing different initial shear stress and different confining stress, the cyclic properties of clay such as shear strain development and cyclic strength were investigated. The results showed that with increase in the initial shear stress, the stress-strain curve was flattened to some extent. The cyclic strength expressed by the stress ratio was higher in the test with $1.0kgf/cm^2$ of confining stress, while the cyclic strength expressed by the deviator stress was higher in the test with $1.5kgf/cm^2$ of confining stress.
