  • In this paper, the channel change was continuously measured for 24 hours from July 5, 2017 on the coast near Deokjeok-do, Incheon. The underwater channel has various channel environment characteristics as the change in the time axis and the change in the frequency axis occurs in real time, and the underwater communication performance decreases due to the multipath fading and the Doppler effect. Therefore, in this study, we performed the OFDM system performance analysis in the underwater channel environment by applying the repetitive transmission diversity scheme in the time and frequency domain to improve the communication performance in the real-world underwater communication environment. Using the collected data, we compared the channel environment in the time and frequency domain and analyzed the BER performance according to the pilot spacing and the number of repetitive transmissions in the time and frequency axis.

  • Underwater acoustic communication can be applied to various area such as scientific, commercial and military survey using Autonomous Underwater Vehicles and Unmanned Underwater Vehicles. Underwater communication is studying very actively by advanced country like United States. But differ from wireless communication in the air, underwater acoustic communication has some difficult problems, ISI(Inter Symbol Interference) due to multipath and limit of transmission bandwidth due to slow propagation of sound wave. In this paper, SC-FDE and OFDM transmission system for the cancellation of ISI in conjunction with underwater acoustic channel modeling are applied to the underwater simulation of communication. The performance of these methods in the simulation guide to possibility of adopting in underwater acoustic communication algorithm. For this purpose, we compare SER performance of SC-FDE with that of OFDM for modelled underwater channel. Underwater channel is generated by Bellhop model. Simulation results show above 5dB SNR gain at 10-3 SER. And it demonstrate SC-FDE is efficient method for underwater acoustic communication.

  • Underwater acoustic communication has multipath error because of reflection by sea-level and sea-bottom. The multipath of underwater channel causes signal distortion and error floor. In this paper, in order to design an efficient packet structure, we employ channel coding scheme and phase recovery algorithm. For channel coding scheme, half rate LDPC channel coding scheme with N=1944 and K=972 was used. Also, decision directed phase recovery was used for correcting phase offset induced by multipath. Based on these algorithms, we propose length of data for optimal packet structure in the environment of oceanic experimentation.

  • This paper proposes an adequate UWA (Underwater Acoustic) communication system of underwater communication network in the Yellow Sea. UWA channel is obtained from Bellhop ray tracing method with Yellow Sea environments. Based on this channel, communication parameters for CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) and SC-FDM (Single Carrier-Frequency Division Multiplexing) using diversity techniques are calculated. In order to prove the proposed methods, BER (Bit Error Rate) and data rate are obtained using computer simulations and the adequate communication system for long rms delay spread and low Eb/No environments is proposed from the simulation.

  • This paper proposes a new efficient MAC(Media Access Control) protocol to establish the ultrasonic communication network for underwater vehicles, which ensures a certain level of maximum throughput regardless of the propagation delay of ultrasonic and allows fast data transmission through the multiple ultrasonic communication channel. A MAC protocol for underwater communication network that allows 'peer-to-peer' communication between a surface ship and multiple underwater systems is designed, and the proposed control protocol is implemented for its verification.

  • As underwater channel is very complex and time-varying, don't supports good-quality for communication service. In this paper, a multi-carrier CDMA(MC-CDMA) system for the reliability and robust service in the underwater acoustic channel is proposed and analyzed for its performance. Applied variable rate algorithm to the proposed system gets a channel state information from relationship between SINR and user data-rate. Using channel state information make spectrum usage more efficient and overall system performance improved. In this paper, the performance of proposed system analyzed by simulation. And Pseudo-Random spread codes used in the system are discussed.

  • In this paper a cross layer protocol, referred to as an underwater ad-hoc communication (UAC) protocol, is proposed for underwater acoustic networks (UANets). An underwater node (UN), which tries to transfer data to another UN or a buoy in ad-hoc manner, can access channel as well as determine routing path by employing the UAC protocol. The channel access, route determination, and reliable data transfer are designed being adaptive to underwater environments. In addition, we propose both UN and packet architectures in order to efficiently implement the UAC protocol for UANets.

  • Underwater communication has multipath error because of reflection by sea-level and sea-bottom. The multipath of underwater channel causes signal distortion and error floor. The excessive multipath encountered in underwater communication channel creates inter symbol interference, which is a limiting factor to achieve a high data rate and bit error rate performance. Therefore, to increase throughput efficiency and improve performance, this paper consider FTN (Faster-than-Nyquist) signalling based on turbo equalization. FTN signalling is a technique of transmitting information at a rate higher than the allowed Nyquist limit. This paper presented efficient decoder structure of FTN transmission in the environment of multipath underwater channel and we compare the performance between FTN method and conventional punctured method in lake experimentation. As a results of lake experiment, we confirmed FTN method based on turbo equalization is applicable and efficiency in underwater communication.

  • In this paper, we propose a multi-channel medium access control (MAC) protocol, named underwater multi-channel MAC protocol (UMMAC), for underwater acoustic networks (UANs). UMMAC is a split phase and reservation based multi-channel MAC protocol which enables hosts to utilize multiple channels via a channel allocation and power control algorithm (CAPC). In UMMAC, channel information of neighboring nodes is gathered via exchange of control packets. With such information, UMMAC allows for as many parallel transmissions as possible while avoiding using extra time slot for channel negotiation. By running CAPC algorithm, which aims at maximizing the network's capacity, users can allocate their transmission power and channels in a distributed way. The advantages of the proposed protocol are threefold: 1) Only one transceiver is needed for each node; 2) based on CAPC, hosts are coordinated to negotiate the channels and control power in a distributed way; 3) comparing with existing RTS/CTS MAC protocols, UMMAC do not introduce new overhead for channel negotiation. Simulation results show that UMMAC outperforms Slotted floor acquisition multiple access (FAMA) and multi-channel MAC (MMAC) in terms of network goodput (50% and 17% respectively in a certain scenario). Furthermore, UMMAC can lower the end-to-end delay and achieves a lower energy consumption compared to Slotted FAMA and MMAC.

  • Recently, the necessity of underwater acoustic communication and demand for transmitting and receiving various data such as voice or high resolution image data are increasing as well. The performance of underwater acoustic communication system is influenced by underwater channel characteristic. Especially, a delay spread caused by reverberation and multi-path induces the ISI (Inter-Symbol-Interference) and reduces the communication performance. In this paper, we study the OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) technique for robust the delay spread in underwater channel. We also use the clipping method to overcome the performance degradation in high PAPR (Peak-to-Average Power Ratio). We confirm the performances of underwater communication system by the underwater channel model simulation model and experiment in small water tank. As a result, the multi-carrier modulation with clipping method presented low BER and the previous single carrier modulation had high BER.
