  • The key process in silicon surface micromachining is the selective etching of a sacrificial layer to release the silicon microstructure. The newly developed anhydrous HF/$CH_3$OH gas phase etching of TEOS (teraethylorthosilicate) sacrificial layers onto the polysilicon and the nitride substrates was employed to release the polysilicon microstructures. A residual product after TEOS etching onto the nitride substrate was observed on the surface, since a SiOxNy layer is formed on the TEOS/nitride interface. The polysilicon microstructures are stuck to the underlying substrate because SiOxNy layer does not vaporize. We found that the only sacrificial etching without any residual product and stiction is TEOS etching onto the polysilicon substrate.

  • Graphene, one single atomic layer of graphite, has attracted extensive attention in various research fields since its first isolation from graphite. Application in the future electronics requires better understanding and manipulation of electronic properties of graphene supported on various solid substrates. Here, we present a study on charge doping and morphology of graphene prepared on atomically flat and highly polar mica substrates. Ultra-flat single-layer graphene was prepared by micro-exfoliation of graphite followed by deposition on cleaved mica substrates. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed presence of ultra-thin water films formed in a layer-by-layer manner between graphene and mica substrates. Raman spectroscopy showed that a few angstrom-thick water films efficiently block electron transfer from graphene to mica. Hole doping in graphene caused by underlying mica substrates was also visualized by scanning Kelvin probe microscopy (SKPM).

  • Electroluminescence (EL) characteristics of green-emission ZnS:Cu,Cl-based ac-type inorganic powder electroluminescent structures were examined by inserting carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into or next to the dielectric layer. For the top-emission type EL structure, where the luminescent light was emitted from the top of the structure, was fabricated by assembling in order, a top electrode, an emitting layer, a dielectric layer, and a bottom electrode from the top. $BaTiO_3$ powder mixed with CNTs was used as a dielectric layer or CNTs were deposited between the bottom electrode and $BaTiO_3$ dielectric layer in order to improve the role of the dielectric layer in the structure. Luminance of an EL structure with CNTs inclusion was greatly enhanced possibly due to the high dielectric constant in the dielectric layer of $BaTiO_3$/CNTs, which is one of hot research topics utilizing nano-objects for intensifying dielectric constant and reducing dielectric loss at the same time. A variation on the CNTs themselves and their inclusion methods in the dielectric layer has been exhorted, and the underlying mechanism for the role of CNTs in the EL structure will be explained in the poster. In order to extend the flexibility of EL devices, EL devices were fabricated on the paper substrate and their performance was compared other EL devices on the plastic-based substrate.

  • FMS is a distributed system composed of various programmable manufacturing hardware such as robots and NC machines. For the autonomous operation of such a system, an integrated software layer for the control and monitoring in needed on top of the manufacturing hardware. However, constructing and maintaining such a software layer is difficult due to the complexity of a underlying FMS and its frequently changing nature. To cope with this problem, this paper proposes an object-oriented FMS integration model, in which objects acting as virtual manufacturing cells are instantiated for each physical cell in the underlying object-oriented database. Various other entities involved in manufacturing processes and their relationship to the cell objects are also captured in the database. This paper describes the structure of this object-oriented FMS database on our prototype implementation called FREE.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the surrounding and underlying shades' effect on the color adjustment potential (CAP) of a single-shade composite used in a thin layer. Materials and Methods: Cylinder specimens (1.0 mm thick) were built with the Vittra APS Unique composite, surrounded (dual specimens) or not (simple specimens) by a control composite (shade A1, A2, or A3). Simple specimens were also built only with the control composites. Each specimen's color was measured against white and black backgrounds or the simple control specimens with a spectrophotometer (CIELAB system). The whiteness index for dentistry (WID) and translucency parameters (TP00) were calculated for simple specimens. Differences (ΔE00) in color between the simple/dual specimens and the controls were calculated. The CAP was calculated based on the ratios between data from simple and dual specimens. Results: The Vittra APS Unique composite showed higher WID and TP00 values than the controls. The highest values of ΔE00 were observed among simple specimens. The color measurements of Vittra APS Unique (simple or dual) against the control specimens presented the lowest color differences. Only surrounding the single-shade composite with a shaded composite barely impacted the ΔE00. The highest CAP values were obtained using a shaded composite under simple or dual specimens. Conclusions: The CAP of Vittra APS Unique was strongly affected by the underlying shade, while surrounding this composite with a shaded one barely affected its color adjustment.

  • Formation mechanism of residual carbon layer, frequently observed in the $CuInSe_2$ (CIS) thin film prepared by direct solution coating routes, was investigated in order to find a way to eliminate it. As a model system, a methanol solution with dissolved Cu and In salts, whose viscosity was adjusted by adding ethylcellulose (EC), was chosen. It was found that a double layer, a top metal ion-derived film and bottom EC-derived layer, formed during an air drying step presumably due to different solubility between metal salts and EC in methanol. Consequently, the top metal ion-derived film acts as a barrier layer inhibiting further thermal decomposition of underlying EC, resulting a formation of bottom carbon residue layer.

  • In this article, a comparative study has been made to investigate the scattering behaviour of three layered structure model on torsional surface wave. For such model intermediate layer is taken as fiber reinforced composite, resting over a dry sandy Gibson substratum and underlying by different anelastic media. We consider two distinct mediums for topmost layer. In the first case, topmost layer has been taken as fluid saturated homogeneous porous layer, while in the second case the fluid saturated porous layer has been replaced by a transversely isotropic layer. Simple form expression for the secular equation of torsional surface wave has been worked out in both the cases by executing specific boundary conditions, which comprises Whittaker's function and its derivative, for imminent result that have been elaborated asymptotically. Some special cases have been constituted which are in excellent compliance with recorded literatures. For the sake of comparative study, numerical estimation and graphical illustration have been accomplished to identify the effects of the width ratio of the layers, Biot's gravity parameter, sandy parameter, porosity parameter and other heterogeneity parameters corresponding to the layers and half spaces, horizontal compressive and tensile initial stress on the phase velocity of torsional surface wave.

  • In this study, we examine the applicability of an artificial neural network(ANN) for filtering underwater random noise and for identifying underlying signals taken from noisy environment. The approach is to find a way of compressing the input data and then decompressing it using an ANN as in image compressing process. It is well known that random signal is hard to compress while ordered information is not. The use of a limited number of processing elements(PEs) in the hidden layer of an Ann ensures that some of the noise would be removed in the reconstruction process. Two types of the signals, synthesized and measured, are used to examine the effectiveness of the ANN-based filter. After training process is completed, the ANN successfully extracts the underlying signals form the synthesized or measured noisy signals. In particular, compared with the results form without filtering or moving averaged, the ANN-based filter gives much better spectrograms to identify underlying signals from the measured noisy data. This filtering process is achieved without using and kind of highly accurate signal processing technique. More experimentation needs to be followed to develop the ANN-based filtering technique to the level of complete understanding.

  • In this paper, a numerical method for singular perturbation problems arising in chemical reactor theory for general singularly perturbed two point boundary value problems with boundary layer at one end(left or right) of the underlying interval is presented. The original second order differential equation is replaced by an approximate first order differential equation with a small deviating argument. By using the trapezoidal formula we obtain a three term recurrence relation, which is solved using Thomas Algorithm. To demonstrate the applicability of the method, we have solved four linear (two left and two right end boundary layer) and one nonlinear problems. From the results, it is observed that the present method approximates the exact or the asymptotic expansion solution very well.

  • The use of dredged soft marine clay is increasing due to a shortage of coarse material available. This paper presents a stabilization method that can increase shear strength of the surface layer of a dredged clay deposit at dates much earlier than usual. The desiccation of the upper soft 1-2m layer can be accelerated by interrupting water seeping from its bottom with impervious geotextile. Just below the geotextile, enough pervious material is provided so that the underlying deposit can be drained through it. This scheme is proved to be effective through theoretical analysis.
