Decoding the molecular mechanisms underlying axon guidance is key to precise understanding of how complex neural circuits form during neural development. Although substantial progress has been made over the last three decades in identifying numerous axon guidance molecules and their functional roles, little is known about how these guidance molecules collaborate to steer growth cones to their correct targets. Recent studies in Drosophila point to the importance of the combinatorial action of guidance molecules, and further show that selective fasciculation and defasciculation at specific choice points serve as a fundamental strategy for motor axon guidance. Here, I discuss how attractive and repulsive guidance cues cooperate to ensure the recognition of specific choice points that are inextricably linked to selective fasciculation and defasciculation, and correct pathfinding decision-making.
Partial redundancy elimination (PRE) is an interesting compiler optimization because of its effectiveness and generality. Among many PRE algorithms, the one in static single assignment form (SSAPRE) has benefits over other bit-vector-based PRE algorithms. It preserves the properties of the SSA form after PRE and exploits the sparsity of the SSA form, resulting in reduced analysis and optimization time. This paper presents a practical improvement of the SSAPRE algorithm that further reduces the analysis and optimization time. The underlying idea is removing unnecessary ${\Phi}$'s during the ${\Phi}$-Insertion phase that is the first step of SSAPRE. We classify the expressions into three categories: confined expressions, local expressions, and the others. We show that unnecessary ${\Phi}$'s for confined and local expressions can be easily detected and removed. We implement our locality-based SSAPRE algorithm in a C compiler and evaluate its effectiveness with 20 applications from SPEC benchmark suites. In our measurements, on average 91 of ${\Phi}$'s identified by the original demand-driven SSAPRE algorithm are unnecessary for PRE. Pruning these unnecessary ${\Phi}$'s in the ${\Phi}$-Insertion phase makes our locality-based SSAPRE algorithm 1.8 times faster, on average, than the original SSAPRE algorithm.

The majority of database users interact with database systems by manipulating forms. This paper discusses the fundamentals underlying forms and considers low these mechanisms affect the behavior of forms We then review the forms supported by commercial products. None of the packages reviewed provide all of the features that make up an ideal form. We propose a new design that overcomes many of the limitations observed in the packages currently available. The new system is event- driven, object-oriented, supports a hierachy of composite blocks, and is primarily modeless. Forms are defined as top-level blocks and blocks can be either atomic or composite structures with methods directly included in their definition. Messages are passed among form objects. Defining forms with the proposed system is simple because from definitions are similar to type declarations in Pascal.
In this paper, we report on a set of new algorithms to realize a nonlinear compressed-domain video/audio editor that overcomes various realization problems. For efficiency, the underlying algorithm, which uses a central data structure in the form of doubled linked lists, performs soft edits of cut and paste (which, in turn, involves soft implementations of frame type conversion) and addresses problems relating to video/audio synchronization and random access, and decoder buffer control.
This paper studies the problem of option pricing in an incomplete market. The market incompleteness comes from the discontinuity of the underlying asset price process which is, in particular, assumed to be a compound Poisson process. To find a reasonable price for a European contingent claim, we first find the unique minimal martingale measure and get a price by taking an expectation of the payoff under this measure. To get a closed-form price, we use an asymptotic expansion. In case where the minimal martingale measure is a signed measure, we use a sequence of martingale measures (probability measures) that converges to the equivalent martingale measure in the limit to compute the price. Again, we get a closed form of asymptotic option price. It is the Black-Scholes price and a correction term, when the distribution of the return process has nonzero skewness up to the first order.

The amount of financial information in sophisticated large data bases is huge and makes interfirm performance comparisons very difficult or at least very time consuming. The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether neural networks in the form of self-organizing maps (SOM) can be successfully employed to manage the complexity for competitive financial benchmarking. SOM is known to be very effective to visualize results by projecting multi-dimensional financial data into two-dimensional output space. Using the SOM, we overcome the problems of finding an appropriate underlying distribution and the functional form of data when structuring and analyzing a large data base, and show an efficient procedure of competitive financial benchmarking through clustering firms on two-dimensional visual space according to their respective financial competitiveness. For the empirical purpose, we analyze the data base of annual reports of 100 Korean listed companies over the years 1998, 1999, and 2000.
The most popular convergent services are being made mostly out of IT related services and devices. To help understand the underlying principles making convergent services the paper suggests a logical view of converging process. A service is assumed to consist of unit services that can be used in algorithmic operations to form a new convergent service. Convergence operations for a couple of unit services are typed according to whether the unit services are modified. Internal convergence leads to a new service from a combination of sub units of the two unit services. External convergences do not alter original unit services but simply combine them to form a new service. The paper also suggests several measurements to evaluate the convergent services with respect to the existing services used to create the new convergent service.
Conversion of the normal soluble form of prion protein, PrP ($PrP^C$), to proteinase K-resistant form ($PrP^{Sc}$) is a common molecular etiology of prion diseases. Proteinase K-resistance is attributed to a drastic conformational change from ${\alpha}$-helix to ${\beta}$-sheet and subsequent fibril formation. Compelling evidence suggests that membranes play a role in the conformational conversion of PrP. However, biophysical mechanisms underlying the conformational changes of PrP and membrane binding are still elusive. Recently, we demonstrated that the putative transmembrane domain (TMD; residues 111-135) of Syrian hamster PrP penetrates into the membrane upon the reduction of the conserved disulfide bond of PrP. To understand the mechanism underlying the membrane insertion of the TMD, here we explored changes in conformation and membrane binding abilities of PrP using wild type and cysteine-free mutant. We show that the reduction of the disulfide bond of PrP removes motional restriction of the TMD, which might, in turn, expose the TMD into solvent. The released TMD then penetrates into the membrane. We suggest that the disulfide bond regulates the membrane binding mode of PrP by controlling the motional freedom of the TMD.

When modeling students' conceptual understanding, there are several different frameworks, among which are the alternative conception framework and the mental model framework, which converge to suggest a form of knowledge representation. However, little research has explained how they are different from each other and from memory. The purpose of this study was to develop a new mental model theory that integrates the different terminologies and their background theories, which refer to students' ideas not only in science education, but also in other research areas. For this purpose, at first, we compared different terminologies including alternative conception, p-prim, and mental models, and the underlying theories used for representing students' ideas in learning science. Through such comparison, we tried to find the relationship among them. We reviewed related literature and synthesized the results from both cognitive science (related research areas) and science education approaches, especially, Vosniadou's mental model theory. Based on reviewing previous studies, we have developed a preliminary mental model theory 'an integrated theoretical structure of mental models'. We applied the new mental model theory to interpret data on students' ideas about circular motion from our previous research. We expect our new mental model theory will help us understand how students form their own ideas in science from an integrated perspective.
The identification of genes involved in true hypha formation is important in the study of mechanisms underlying the morphogenetic switch in yeast. We isolated a gene responsible for the morphogenetic switch in Yarrowia lipolytica, which forms true hyphae in response to serum or N-acetylglucosamine. The isolated gene, encoding 847 amino acids, had sequence identities of 27% and 25% with the Bud6 (Aip3) proteins of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Schizosaccharomyces pombe, respectively. Disruption of this gene, designated YIBUD6, in haploid and diploid strains significantly reduced the ability of Y. lipolytica to switch from the yeast form to the hyphal form in hypha-inducing media. It was also found that YIBud6$\Delta$ mutants were rounder than the wild type when grown in the yeast form. These results indicate that the YIBud6 protein is necessary for hyphal growth and cell polarity in both haploid and diploid Y. lipolytica cells.
