A new type of earthquake resilient reinforced concrete (RC) shear wall structure, installed with replaceable coupling beams and replaceable corner components at the bottom of wall piers, is proposed in this study. At first, the mechanical behavior of replaceable components, such as combined dampers and replaceable corner component, is studied by cyclic loading tests on them. Then, cycling loading tests are conducted on one conventional coupled shear wall and one new type of coupled shear wall with replaceable components. The test results indicate that the damage of the new type of coupled shear wall concentrates on replaceable components and the left parts are well protected. Finally, a case study is introduced. The responses of one conventional frame-tube structure and one new type of structure installed with replaceable components under the wind and the earthquake are compared, which verify that the performance of new type of structure is much better than the conventional structure.

Comprehension of physical properties distribution of underground cavity must be made primarily to show the clear image of the state of the cavity. A physical scale model experiment is executed assuming that underground cavity in filled with air or water of different ratio. The state of cavity wall is considered wet. Cavity model is made of agar. As a experimental result, even if the cavity wall is wet, high air and water ratio cavity shows high anomaly.
In this study, an improved modular arch system with the lower arch space composed of a precast arch block and an outrigger was proposed as an underground culvert, and its applicability and structural behaviors were confirmed. This modular arch culvert structure with vertical walls was designed using precast blocks and by adjusting the placement spacing of concrete blocks to the upper part form an arch shape and the lower part form a vertical wall shape, based on previously researched modular arch systems. Owing to the vertical wall of the proposed modular arch system, it is possible to secure a load-carrying capacity and an arch space that can sufficiently resist the earth pressure generated from the backfill soil and loading on the arch system. To verify the structural characteristics, and applicability of the proposed modular precast arch culvert structure, a full-scale modular culvert specimen was fabricated, and a loading test was conducted. By examining its construction process and loading test results, the applicability and constructability of the proposed structure were analyzed along with its structural characteristics. In addition, its the structural predictability and safety for the applicability were evaluated by comparing the construction process and loading test results with the FE analysis results.
Recently, as the utilization of underground space increases, the demand for underground excavation increases. In this study, the concrete mixture with a new material was used to develop and evaluate the stability of the CS-H wall that can greatly minimize the problems of existing wall and minimize the impact of ground depression and surrounding ground that may occur in the future for excavation of over 30 m deep in urban areas. The fiber reinforcement formulation of steel fibers, synthetic fibers, and glass fibers, along with fine aggregate parts of PS-ball and ferronickel, were mixed. The Mixture ratios were determined by conducting slump test compresive strength test, modulus of elastic test, flexural strength test, splitting tensile strength test and conductivity test. As a result of the test, the steel fiber mixture showed very good results compared to other reference values in all items, and it is considered to be the most suitable for the CS-H wall to be developed.

Pre-loads could be imposed on the braced wall to prevent the horizontal displacements during the ground excavation adjacent to the existing tunnel. For this purpose, new pre-loading system through which large pre-loads could be applied to the braced wall was used in the model tests. Large scale model tests were performed in the real scale test pit which was 2.0 m in width and 6.0 m in hight and 4.0 m in length. Test ground was constructed by sand. Model tunnel in 1.2 m diameter was constructed before test ground excavation. Test ground was excavated adjacent to existing tunnel and was braced. To investigate the effect of pre-loading, tests without pre-load were also performed. During the ground excavation were the behavior of braced wall, test tunnel, and ground measured. Model tests were also numerically analysed and their results were compared to that of the real scale tests. As a result, it was found that the stability of the existing tunnel was greatly enhanced when the horizontal displacements of braced wall was reduced by applying pre-load larger than the design load.
Although underground works are essential to use underground spaces in urban areas efficiently, various damages caused by constructions have often occurred, making them major social problems. Since 2018, it is stipulated in the Special Act on Underground Safety Management that appropriate construction methods must be used in the design stage to prevent various damage cases. This Special Act includes establishing an area subject to underground safety impact assessment, analysis of ground and geological status, review of effects caused by changes in groundwater, review of ground safety, and establishment of measures to secure underground safety. This study area consists of various strata in order of landfill, sedimentary silt, sedimentary sand, sedimentary gravel, weathering zone, and foundation rock. Also, the slurry wall, a highly rigid underground continuous wall, was chosen as a construction method to consider high water table distribution and minimize the influence of the surroundings in this area. However, ground subsidence occurred on the road nearby in December 2019 due to the inflow of loosening soil to the construction area. Thus, several types of site investigations were conducted to suggest an appropriate analysis method and to find out loosed ground behavior and its area for the subsided site. As a result, new design soil properties were re-calculated, and the reinforcement measures were proposed through analytical verification.
Supporting method of a Temporary retaining wall for underground excavation project are adopted by systems of strut, anchor, nail, raker, etc. Strut system and Raker system of these methods are mostly used preloading jack to minimize deformations of retaining wall. We determinate efficient preloading to analysis these strut-preloadings, deformations of retaining wall, axial forces, and etc.. This study is analysed that preloading applied 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, ...., 100% for strut and raker installed by CIP temporary retaining wall. This study results that adequate preloadings were determined to analysis correlations of preloading, deformations of wall, maximum bending moment, axial force of strut, and displacement of surrounding.

Rapid industrialization and urbanization caused by the high economic growth of the country requires optimization of land usage as well as the expansion of underground space. Therefore the construction of large and deep basements is inevitable in built up areas where the braced excavation for earth retaining structures may create many problems such as settlement and damages of nearby buildings and underground utilities. In this work, some of major influential factors concerning the stability of braced excavation are investigated and the results are compared with the field observation results. The ground water table, applied strut forces, horezontal wall displacement, infilling materials in the rock joints were found to be the most critical factors influencing the stability of braced walls constructed in the layered ground. Magnituide and type of the wall deformation was closely related to the pattern of the surface settlement. The stability of braced walls are described in terms of strut forces.

Due to rapid urbanization and industrialization, water supply and sewer line systems are also developed relevantly. Manhole is an essential component structure of the pipeline system. Manhole is a structure constructed to accommodate the direction, dimension, differences in level, and easy of maintenance in the pipeline system. In this paper we present the result of investigations pertaining to the structural behavior of PVC sewer manhole buried underground. In the paper mechanical properties of PVC material are reported. In addition, by the finite element analysis (FEA), we confirmed that a PVC double-wall corrugated pipe manhole, when it is buried underground, is safe for the stress as well as buckling strength if the manhole is constructed within the suggested limit of buried depth.

The practice of the construction and management of the underground petroleum storage facilities in Korea was investigated extensively, and the problems were identified. The advanced technologies in the U.S.A was comparatively studied. Considering the effectiveness of leak prevention and technology applicability, the following measures were suggested. To prevent corrosion of the tank, a clad tank, an interior-lining tank, or a double-wall tank was appropriate and appeared to be most cost effective. For piping, non-metalic material was suggested. To prevent spill, a catchment basin can be effective. For monitoring of leak, construction of more than one of one or combination of an automatic leak-detection device, a vapor-detection system, a ground water-monitoring system, and a double-wall detection system was recommended.
