The purpose of this study is to present systematic information and direction to urban underground space development industry, civil engineering and R&D. Regarding the development of urban underground space, the situation in Korea, especially now in Seoul, can be called an underground Renaissance. The Superground project, which has been going on for several years through international competition, is now completed and is about to open the Seoul Architecture Museum. Leading underground space complex development project of Yeongdongdaero, which is the largest living underground space in human history, spectral projects such as the Seoul section of the GTX routes, making underground roads of the Dongbu Expressway and the Seobu Expressway are now speeding up progress. Recently, plans have been made to use the underground more actively through the restructuring project of Gwanghwamun Square, the face of Seoul. And then, patents are indispensable resources for establishing a strategy for R&D as one of the indices showing what technologies have been developed and what technology development will be done in the future. Based on this background, this study attempts to classify and define the technical elements of urban underground space development through the analysis of patents of major countries in the world, and analyze and present state of technology level and situation accordingly.

Due to the uneasy controllable qualities of the substructures such as pile and foundation, which are laid on underground, geotechnical engineers have applied conservative criteria to them. Therefore, the specification criterion of cast-in-situ concrete pile, which allows only one fourth of the compressive strength of structural capacity, has forced geotechnical designers to consider the most uneconomical design regardless of satisfying the grade of quality-control, required performance, construction cost and so on. Thus, in this study, we proposed the less conservative criteria on the strength of concrete pile, based on the experimental testing results of cast-in-situ concrete piles.

In the mix proportion of shotcrete, it was analyzed as required in terms of eco-friendly technology to take advantage of the screenings. Screenings of recycling can be a solution in order to overcome the quality degradation due to the recent lack of good quality sand as well as the utilization of waste materials. Five regional screening and screening replaced fine aggregates for physical characteristics were analyzed to evaluate the usability screenings as shotcrete's combined aggregate. It was analyzed the effect of particle size distribution in the combined aggregate for shotcrete and maximum replacement was estimated according to the type of screenings.
Assessing ground stability is critical to the construction of underground transportation infrastructure. Surface displacement is a key indicator of ground stability, and can be measured using interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR). This study measured time-series surface displacement using permanent scatterer InSAR applied to Sentinel-1 SAR images acquired from January 2017 to June 2023 for the area around a deep underground expressway under construction to connect Mandeok-dong and Centum City in Busan, South Korea. Regions of seasonal subsidence and uplift were identified, as were regions with severe subsidence after summer 2022. To evaluate stability of the ground in the construction area, the mean displacement velocity, final surface displacement, cumulative surface displacement, and difference between minimum and maximum surface displacement were analyzed. Considering the time-series surface displacement characteristics of the study area, the difference between minimum and maximum surface displacement since June 2022 was found to be the most suitable parameter for evaluating ground stability. The results identified highly unstable ground in the construction area as being to the north of the mid-lower reaches of the Oncheon-cheon River and to the west of the Suyeong River at the point where both rivers meet, with the difference between minimum and maximum surface displacement of 40~60 mm.

Objectives: This study was performed to evaluate the total dust, size-selective dust, and heavy metal concentrations generated inside and outside toll booths on an expressway and to identify the source through analysis of the components of the deposited dust. Methods: A total of 32 samples were collected from eight expressway toll booths. Each total dust sample was collected using a 37 mm PVC filter attached to a personal air sampler. Heavy metal samples were collected according to NIOSH method 7300. The size-selective dust concentrations were identified using a DustMate, and deposited dust was analyzed by WD-XRF and UHR-FE-SEM. Results: The geometric mean concentrations of the total dust inside and outside the toll booths were 337.5 ㎍/㎥ and 342.7 ㎍/㎥, respectively. The overall concentrations of TSP, PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 were higher on the outside of the toll booths, as the particle size of dust was larger, and higher in the underground passage as the dust size was smaller. The real-time analysis of the dust concentrations of TSP, PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 revealed to be higher at morning and evening times than other times because of heavy traffic. The element components of deposited dust in the toll booth were related to natural sources rather than artificial sources. Among the chemical components in the deposited dust analyzed by WD-XRF, SiO2 was the highest. For the elements analyzed by UHR-FE-SEM, C was the highest, followed by O, and Si. Conclusions: In order to reduce the dust concentrations around toll booths on an expressway, it is necessary to periodically clean surrounding areas such as underground passages, and it is also necessary to remove deposited dust inside the toll booth from time to time.

Unexpected anomalies in the geotechnical investigation at design stage may cause problems during tunnel excavation. Therefore, it is important to predict the ground condition ahead of a tunnel face during tunnel excavation in order to prevent tunnel collapse. Despite the fulfillment of an electrical resistivity survey at the tunnel face, the existing electrical resistivity survey program can produce distorted results by the limitation of tunnel modelling. In this background, this study develops a modelling program for an electrical resistivity survey considering the tunnel shape. Numerical simulation and inverse calculation were performed for the electrical resistivity survey in the tunnel using the developed program. As a result, it was proved that the developed program could predict accurately the anomalous object's location and condition ahead of the tunnel face.

Recently, along with the continuous increase in the supply of electric vehicles, electric vehicle fire accidents are also showing a rapidly increasing trend. Electric vehicle fires last for a long time compared to fires in internal combustion engine vehicles and have problems with the risk of secondary explosions and the generation of large amounts of smoke. In particular, electric vehicle fires in underground roads, which are semi-enclosed spaces, may amplify the problems of existing electric vehicle fires. On the other hand, there are no domestic response guidelines for electric vehicle fires occurring inside underground roads. Therefore, an awareness of fire accidents was confirmed through a survey of the general public, and electric vehicle fire characteristics and primary considerations were derived from stakeholders related to electric vehicle fires in underpasses. Through this, the guidelines for responding to electric vehicle fires on underground roads were established.
Around 70% of Korea is mountainous, an increase in tunnel construction. It's due to the growing interest of the public for the environment and land required for the road construction is very scarce. During construction of 'Daedong 1 tunnel' in the expressway expansion project between Naengjeong and Busan, there are shallow shaft due to this tunnel located in the valley and the shafts are separated, and penetrating location change was inevitable for construction was delayed because of complaint. So, we change the position of the penetrating by applying multi-channel TSP, and conducted a stability analysis. The analysis results showed that there is no problem on the stability of the tunnel. To secure the construction of additional stability, We installed instrument, performed mechanical excavation, added reinforcement at shallow shaft and conducted bench cut.

The construction of the tunnel portal should be careful because cover depth is shallow and it is difficult to exhibit the arching effect. Tunnel stability may be reduced with additional embankment above the portal of tunnel. In this study, in order to examine the stability of the tunnel according to additional embankment above the portal of tunnel, numerical analysis was performed while changing the ground conditions and height of embankment. As a result of the numerical analysis, it was found that the allowable flexural compressive stress of shotcrete and allowable axial force of rockbolts were exceeded when the height of additional embankment was 12 m in rock mass rating V. When considering the displacement, the range of the plastic region and the behavior of the support materials, the tunnel stability seems to be greatly reduced if the height of additional embankment above the portal of tunnel exceeds 10 m.
