Analytical and numerical modeling of soft or problematic soils stabilized with lime and cement require a number of soil parameters which are usually obtained from expensive and time-consuming laboratory experiments. The high shear strength of lime and cement stabilized soils make it extremely difficult to obtain high quality laboratory data in some cases. In this study, an alternative method is proposed, which uses the unconfined compressive strength and estimating functions available in literature to evaluate the shear strength parameters of the treated materials. The estimated properties were applied in finite element model to determine which estimating function is more appropriate for lime and cement treated granular soils. The results show that at the mid-range strength of the stabilized soils, most of applied functions have a good compatibility with laboratory conditions. However, application of some functions at lower or higher strengths would lead to underestimation or overestimation of the unconfined compressive strength.
A simple analytical procedure to analyze reinforced concrete (RC) beams with cracked section is proposed on the basis of the simplified moment-curvature relations of RC sections. Unlike previous analytical models which result in overestimation of stiffness and underestimation of structural deformations induced from assuming perfect-bond condition between steel and concrete, the proposed analytical procedure considers fixed-end rotation caused by anchorage. Furthermore, the proposed analytical procedure, compared with previous numerical models, promotes effectiveness of analysis by reflecting several factors which can influence nonlinearity of RC structure into the simplified moment-curvature relation. Finally, correlation studies between analytical and experimental results are conducted to establish the applicability of the proposed analytical procedure to the nonlinear analysis of RC structures.
We propose an unbiased signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) estimator for the high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) system. The proposed SIR estimator solves the problem of underestimation present in conventional SIR estimators and is suitable for channel quality measurement in the adaptive modulation and coding scheme of HSDPA, which requires accurate SIR estimation for optimum adaptive modulation and coding selection. Our analysis and simulation results demonstrate the improved estimation performance of the proposed SIR estimator.

Underestimation of rock joint shear strength comes from an inadequate consideration of roughness mobilization behavior, which is changed by asperity size as well applied normal load. In this study, we performed rock joint shear tests, and studied the roughness mobilization characteristics related with the scale of normal stress and asperities. Test specimens with artificial triangular asperities were manufactured. The specimens consisted of 3 types, and each type represented unevenness, waviness and total roughness(superposition of unevenness and waviness). The experimental results show that the roughness mobilization characteristics are varied by the scale of normal stress and asperities. Furthermore, the investigation shows that the rate of geometrical component and mechanical component in the total roughness is also varied by the scale of normal stress and asperities. These results suggest that we should consider the roughness mobilization characteristics for the roughness quantification and the shear strength modelling.
Two representative finite volume methods, i.e., the time marching method and the pressure correction method, were applied to 8 centrifugal compressor impeller flows, with low to very high level of pressure ratio, among which 7 impellers' experimental performance is given in the open literature. The present study is focused on the prediction differences from both methods, developed by the authors, in the pressure correction method's point of view. In all cases, the time marching method gives a satifactory solution, but the pressure correction method does not. Up to about $18\%$ less level of total-to-total pressure ratio is predicted by the pressure correction method as the level of the impeller pressure ratio increases up to about 10. The drop of total pressure ratio is caused by the underestimation of static pressure rise which seems to be attributed to inappropriate linearization and discretization of the pressure/density coupling terms in the pressure correction equation.
The computational fluid dynamic is used to explore new aspects of the hill flow. This analysis focuses on flow dependency and the comparison of results from measurements and simulations to show an optimization turbulent model and the possibility of replacing measurements with simulations. The first half of the paper investigates a suitable turbulence model for determining a suitable site for a wind turbine. Results of the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model are compared precisely with the measurements taken in front of the hilltop, The Reynolds Stress Model showed exact results after 1.0 times of hill steepness but the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model and standard k-${\omega}$ model showed greater underestimation. In addition, velocity flow over Pha Taem hill topography and the reference geometry shape were compared to find a suitable site for a turbine in case the actual hill structure was associated with the trapezoid geometric shape. Further study of geometry shaped hills and suitable sites for wind turbines will be reported elsewhere.
Water vapor permeability of films is commonly calculated from the water vapor transmission rate of the film measured using a permeability cup method which is essentially a gravimetric method. This method was originally developed for petroleum based plastic films with low water vapor permeability. In the case of hydrophilic bio-polymer films, the resistance caused by a stagnant air layer, which is developed between the underside of the film mounted on the cup and the surface of the desiccant saturated salt solution or distilled water, can be significant and, if neglected, ran lead to underestimation of water vapor transmission rates. Therefore, it is necessary to correct water vapor transmission rate data to accurately estimate the water vapor permeability of bio-polymer films.
To investigate a proper sampling method for larval fish in the western coastal waters, the abundances of larval fish sampled at upper and lower layers during the day and nighttime were compared. The difference in the abundances at upper and lower layers seems to be related to the diurnal vertical migration of larval fish. Therefore, samples at upper layer during the day causes an underestimation of the number of species and the abundance. As the abundances through whole water column during the day is not significantly smaller than during the nighttime. samples obtained by oblique tow through whole water column during the day can be used to estimate the abundance of fish larvae.
Based on Yonsei Evolutionary Population Synthesis (YEPS), we have investigated the effect of horizontal branch stars (HBs) on the age-dating of simple stellar populations (SSPs). A detailed comparison of YEPS SSP with H_beta of M31 globular clusters (GCs) reveals (1) that the age dating without HB prescription gives ~5 Gyr younger ages for metal-poor M31 GCs, and (2) the age dating with HB prescription does not need any age gap between metal-poor and metal-rich GCs. This result is parallel to the well-known discrepancy in ages derived from integrated Balmer strengths and isochrone fittings of Milky Way GCs (MWGCs). Without a synthetic blue HB model, we cannot explain strong Balmer indices of metal-poor and old MWGCs. Our results suggest that the SSP model with well calibrated HBs should be used for the age-dating of SSPs to avoid a serious underestimation of ages due to the strong Balmer indices.
This study developed a Poisson generalized linear mixed model and a procedure to estimate genetic parameters for count traits. The method derived from a frequentist perspective was based on hierarchical likelihood, and the maximum adjusted profile hierarchical likelihood was employed to estimate dispersion parameters of genetic random effects. Current approach is a generalization of Henderson's method to non-normal data, and was applied to simulated data. Underestimation was observed in the genetic variance component estimates for the data simulated with large heritability by using the Poisson generalized linear mixed model and the corresponding maximum adjusted profile hierarchical likelihood. However, the current method fitted the data generated with small heritability better than those generated with large heritability.
