  • As environmental concerns escalate, the increase in recycling of aluminum scrap is notable within the aluminum alloy production sector. Precise control of essential components such as Al, Cu, and Si is crucial in aluminum alloy production. However, recycled metal products comprise various metal components, leading to inherent uncertainty in component concentrations. Thus, meticulous determination of input quantities of recycled metal products is necessary to adjust the composition ratio of components. This study proposes a stable input determination heuristic algorithm considering the uncertainty arising from utilizing recycled metal products. The objective is to minimize total costs while satisfying the desired component ratio in aluminum manufacturing processes. The proposed algorithm is designed to handle increased complexity due to introduced uncertainty. Validation of the proposed heuristic algorithm's effectiveness is conducted by comparing its performance with an algorithm mimicking the input determination method used in the field. The proposed heuristic algorithm demonstrates superior results compared to the field-mimicking algorithm and is anticipated to serve as a useful tool for decision-making in realistic scenarios.

  • In this paper, a signal detection scheme for cognitive radio (CR) based on the Bussgang theorem is proposed. The proposed scheme calculates the statistical difference between Gaussian noise and the primary user signal by applying the Bussgang theorem to the received signal. Therefore, the proposed scheme overcomes the noise uncertainty and gives scalable complexity according to the zero-memory nonlinear function for a mobile device. We also present the theoretical analysis on the detection threshold and the detection performance in the additive white Gaussian noise channel. The proposed detection scheme is evaluated by computer simulations based on the IEEE 802.22 standard for the wireless regional area network. Our results show that the proposed scheme is robust to the noise uncertainty and works well in a very low signal-to-noise ratio.

  • Reactivity Initiated Accident (RIA) scenarios require special attention using advanced simulation techniques due to their complexity and importance for nuclear power plant (NPP) safety. While the conservative approach has traditionally been used for safety analysis, it may lead to unrealistic results which calls for the use of best estimate plus uncertainty (BEPU) approach, especially with the current advances in computational power which makes the BEPU analysis feasible. In this work an Uncontrolled Control Element Assembly (CEA) Withdrawal at Full Power accident scenario is analyzed using the BEPU approach by loosely coupling the thermal hydraulics best-estimate system code (RELAP5/SCDAPSIM/MOD3.4) to the statistical analysis software (DAKOTA) using a Python interface. Results from the BEPU analysis indicate that a realistic treatment of the accident scenario yields a larger safety margin and is therefore encouraged for accident analysis as it may enable more economic and flexible operation.

  • This study examines the association between a firm's business strategy and audit report lags. This study employs 5,072 firm-year observations from 2015 to 2019. Our sample comprises all of the firms listed on the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) market and Korea Securities Dealers Automated Quotation (KOSDAQ). We perform OLS regression analysis to test our hypothesis. The OLS regression analysis was conducted through the SAS and STATA programs. We find that business strategy is positively associated with audit report lags. Especially, we find that defender firms are negatively associated with audit report lags. The findings of this study suggest that prospector-like firms would increase their performance uncertainty as well as audit risk. Therefore, prospector-like firms interfere with the efficient audit procedures of auditors. On the other hand, our findings indicate that defender-like firms would decrease their performance uncertainty as well as an audit risk because they focus on simple product lines and cost-efficiency. For this reason, auditors will be able to carry out the audit procedures much more easily. Our results present that a prospector-like business strategy degrades audit effectiveness as it exacerbates a company's financial risk, willingness to accept uncertainty, and the complexity of organizational structure.

  • This study suggests strategies which can enable to creation of new opportunities of competitive advantages while operating a long lasting and consistent business with major trading partners, based on interorganizational information systems (IOISs) specially established and installed for interorganizational transactions. Nowadays, IOISs based mechanism having been widely expanded as a conventional business infrastructure for the interorganizational transactions and/or exchanges, it is customary difficult to obtain any strongly sound advantage over the competitors who have adopted even the simplest deployment of the IOIS mechanisms. In this connection, this study intends to investigate the interorganizational collaborative activities conducted by under the auspicious of IOISs, focused on the prospect of the exploitation of IOISs rather than the implementation of the IOISs. In this study, we, firstly, suggest the concept of Electronic Collaboration which can be defined by the collaborative activities conducted by IOISs, compared to the ones conducted on off-line. In addition, we suggest the Electronic Collaboration as a multi-dimensional concept, constituted by three sub-constructs, the Electronic Information Sharing (EIS), the Electronic Joint Activity (EJA), and the construction of the Electronic Relational Knowledge Store (ERKS). Secondly, we empirically verify the effects of relational and environmental determinants on the Electronic Collaboration. In this study, the relational determinants relate to the variables created in interorganizational relationship like Trust, Influence, Relational Specific Asset-asset invested for the transaction-, and Continuity of the relationship. On the other hand, the environmental determinants relate to the variables surrounding the relationship which are difficult to control. We consider Product Complexity, Technological Uncertainty, and Market Variability as the domain of the environmental determinants. To test our hypotheses, we conducted both paper-based survey and online-based survey. After refining the data with missing responses, a total of 150 data was used for analysis. The results were as follows : Firstly, it is statistically significant that the Electronic Collaboration is composed of EIS, EJA, and ERKS. In particular, the results imply that the firms are able to accumulate relational knowledge base as well as to exchange information or knowledge, and to conduct joint activities through effort to further expand the Electronic Collaboration. Secondly, we have verified the individual effects of the relational and the environmental determinants on the Electronic Collaboration. Product Complexity has been revealed as the most influential variable affecting the Electronic Collaboration. Next, Interorganizational Trust and Technological Uncertainty, in that order, have been seen to have significant effects on the Electronic Collaboration. In other words, when products or services seem to be difficult to standardize, and the core technologies seem to rapidly change, the need for the Electronic Collaboration increase. In addition, the observation dictates that the interorganizational trust turns out to be a critical variable in building a relationship and in seeking further collaboration. The results, further, illustrate that the environmental determinants are relatively more effective than the relational determinants, which is not consistent with a few prior researches relational determinants emphasized. It is because this study doesn't consider the size of the firm. A few researchers have given an emphasis on the relational determinants like trust and influence, especially from the perspective of small firms in interorganizational relationship. However, in our study, where all the sizes of the firms are contained, electronic collaboration is considerably affected by the environmental determinants.

  • This paper describes a fuzzy rule-based assembly algorithm for precision parts mating, The difficulties in devising reliable assembly strategies result from the complexity of the assembly process and the uncertainty such as imperfect knowledge of the parts being assembled as well as the limitations of the devices performing the assembly. To cope with above problems, we propose an assembly algorithm utilizing fuzzy set theory. The presented method allows us to represent the uncertainty by using fuzzy membership function and treat nonlinear sapping from measured force/torque to corrective motions using rules. Finally, the performance of this method is evaluated through a series of experiments. Experimental results show that the proposed method can be effectively used for chamferless and precision parts mating.

  • The electricity supply industry for which high stability and quality of power are the primary aim of power company and the first order of business target. As the facilities of generations, transmissions and substations are increased every year, power system becomes more complex and hard to control. The complexity of the power system causes harmful influence on its security and power facilities. Moreover, difficulty of predicting weather condition in these days with its complexity increases the level of uncertainty of energy demand. Wide area online monitoring of power system offers lots of informations and solutions which clear the causes of insecurity in power system. In this paper, we presents the development of synchrophasor data measurement and transmission system using satellite network for power system online monitoring.

  • In ths paper a new active assembly algorithm for chamferless precision parts mating, is considered. The successful assembly task requires an extremely high position accuracy and a good knowledge of mating parts. However, conventional assembly mehtod alone makes it difficult to achieve satisfactory assembly performance because of the complexity and the uncertainties of the process and its environments such as imperfect knowledge of the parts being assembled as well as the limitation of the devices performing the assebled as well as the limitation of the devices performing the assembly. To cope with these problems, a self-learning rule-based assembly algorithm is proposed by intergaring fuzzy set theory and neural network. In this algortihm, fuzzy set theory copes with the complexity and the uncertainties of the assembly process, while neural network enhances the assembly schemen so as to learn fuzzy rules form experience and adapt to changes in environment of uncertainty and imprecision. The performance of the proposed assembly algorithm is evaluated through a series of experiments. The results show that the self-learning fuzzy assembly scheme can be effecitively applied to chamferless precision parts mating.

  • This paper deals with the social system from the point of system thinking consisting the fundamental construct of system dynamics. The Bertalanffy's general system theory, having been criticized because of its ambiguity, and the complex science theory, emerging system theory, are integrated by using the system thinking which is characterized with three concepts, 'feedback thinking', 'dynamic thinking', 'operational thinking'. In the integration, system thinking suggests the dynamic pattern of the social system have not only an equilibrium status but also complex status. The science of complexity gives an implication to system dynamics the important of the uncertainty and complexity if we interpret the social system as an open system. To show more concrete description, I simulate the cooperation model based on the iterated prisoner dilemma. The simulation results show the diverse patterns of cooperation and betrayal. Especially the sensitivity of initial payoff will cause the chaotic strategic landscapes as the game gose on. These results mean that we should not give the hasty prescription to control social system artificially. Because social system retains the self-organizing force in itself.

  • When an organization adopts new technology, performance through the technology is expected to be decided depending on attitudes of the members, in that technology produces performance only if the members zealously use it. Therefore, the members need to devote themselves to acquire and use the new technology. This attitude of members is called "IT acceptance will" (Ranarajan et al., 2005), and this research is to examine the effect of an individual's "IT acceptance will" on performance. Thus, this research analyzes what increases IT acceptance will and what effect IT acceptance will has on stress due to uncertainty of an organization-job complexity and role conflict- through new IT adoption. This research conducted a survey from July to September in 2009, targeting employees of government offices and public institutions in Kyunggi and Kyungnam provinces. Then, a total of 370 was collected and the final 344 was selected for our research analysis. As a result, this research found out that personal innovation and client orientation improved an individual's IT acceptance will, which improved performance through new IT adoption. However, the new IT adoption also increased job complexity and role conflict, but negative effects of stress on performance was not found as IT adoption will diminished the stress. Based on this result, this research discussed practical and academic implications and the limitations.
