The Solar-B is the third Japanese spacecraft dedicated for solar physics to be launched in summer of 2006. The spacecraft carries a coordinated set of optical, EUV and X-ray instruments that will allow a systematic study of the interaction between the Sun's magnetic field and its high temperature, ionized atmosphere. The Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) consists of a 50cm aperture diffraction limited Gregorian telescope and a focal plane package, and provides quantitative measurements of full vector magnetic fields at the photosphere with spatial resolution of 0.2-0.3 arcsec in a condition free from terrestrial atmospheric seeing. The X-ray telescope (XRT) images the high temperature (0.5 to 10 MK) corona with improved spatial resolution of approximately 1 arcsec. The Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) aims to determine velocity fields and other plasma parameters in the corona and the transition region. The Solar-B telescopes, as a whole, will enable us to explore the origins of the outer solar atmosphere, the corona, and the coupling between the fine magnetic structure at the photosphere and the dynamic processes occurring in the corona. The mission instruments (SOT/EIS/XRT) are joint effort of Japan (JAXA/NAO), the United States (NASA), and the United Kingdom (PPARC). An overview of the spacecraft and its mission instruments are presented.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the transmittance differences of zirconium core due to thickness within the visible light spectrum. Methods: 36 specimens were divided into 3 groups (0.6mm, 0.8mm, 1.0mm) which have each 12 specimens. The size of specimens was 10mm high and 10mm wide. The transmittance of specimens are measured by spectrophotometer Model Cary 500 that can measure infrared-ray, visible wave and ultraviolet-ray. Results: The results shows that there was no significant difference between specimen's thickness and transmittance. Conclusion: The individual's color perception is personal and there are numerous factors that influence on it. In general, human eye can perceive the color of thing only within visible light spectrum but in this experiment through spectrophotometer there was no big difference between specimen's thickness and transmittance. To sum up, The most important factors were a layed porcelain structure and its thickness rather than core thickness in the porcelain crown.
We present a novel and simple method to enable spatially selective $ZnAl_2O_4$ nanocrystal formation on the surface of $B_2O_3$-$Al_2O_3$-ZnO-CaO-$K_2O$ glass by employing localized laser heating. Optimized precipitation of glass-ceramics containing nanocrystals doped with $Eu^{3+}$ and $Yb^{3+}$ ions was performed by controlling $CO_2$ laser power and scan speed. Micro-x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy revealed the mean size and morphology of nanocrystals, and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy showed the lateral distribution of elements in the imaged area. Laser power and scan speed controled annealing temperature for crystalization in the range of 1.4-1.8 W and 0.01-0.3 mm/s, and changed the size of nanocrystals and distribution of dopant ions. We also report more than 20 times enhanced downshift visible emission under ultraviolet excitation, and 3 times increased upconversion emission from $Eu^{3+}$ ions assisted by efficient sensitizer $Yb^{3+}$ ions in nanocrystals under 980 nm excitation. The confocal microscope revealed the depth profile of $Eu^{3+}$ ions by showing their emission intensity variation.
Photoluminescence (PL) and cathodoluminescence (CL) characteristics of Ce-activated $Y_{2-x}Ce_xSiO_5$ have been investigated as functions of Ce concentration and firing condition. According to the X-ray, PL and CL results, $Y_2SiO_5$ is found to have two phases depending on the firing temperature. For the specimen fired above 127$0^{\circ}C$, the emission band peaked at 395nm with a shoulder at 424 nm under ultraviolet (u.v.) and cathode-ray (c.r.) excitation. However, for the specimen fired below 120$0^{\circ}C$ in air the peak was observed at 424 nm and it shifted to longer wavelength with reduction level. The reduced specimen for x=0.02 showed the brightest emission under u.v. excitation whereas under c.r. excitation the brightest emission was observed for the reduced specimen for x=0.06.

Ion implantation in polymeric materials can induce dramatic chemical modifications, such as bond breaking, cross linking, formation of new chemical products, which have strong influences on the macroscopic properties of the materials. In this study ion implantation was performed onto polymer, PC(polycarbonate), in order to investigate change of the optical transmittance property focusing ultraviolet ray range(200-400nm). PC was irradiated with N, Ar, Kr, Xe ions at the ion energy of 50keV and the dose range of 5 ${\times}$ 10$\^$15/, 1 ${\times}$ 10$\^$16/, 7${\times}$10$\^$16/ ions/$\textrm{cm}^2$. FT-IR, XPS, UV/Vis transmittance spectroscopy measurement technologies were employed to obtain chemical. structural properties and optical transmittance of irradiated polymer. The original PC(unimplanted) is quite transparent that it has more than 88% transmittance in the range UV-A(320∼400nm), but after ion implantation, surface colors were changed to the dark brown and the transmittance of UV ray decreased for all implantation condition, and the absorption edge was shift to visible range with increasing mass of implanted ion species and dose.

A Study has been made of surface modification of various polymers by ion implantation to change the optical transmittance property at ultraviolet ray (UV, $200\sim400nm$). The substrates were PC (Polycarbonate), PET(Polyethyleneteraphtalate) and PP (Polypropylene). The effects of ion implantation on the change of optical transmittance were investigated in relation to ion species, implantation energies and ion fluences. The N, Ar, Kr, Xe ion implantation performed at ion energies from 20 to 50keV. The fluences ranged from $5\times10^{15}$ to $7\times10^{16}ions/cm^2$. UV/Vis transmittance spectroscopy, FT-IR and XPS were used to investigate optical transmittance, chemical structure and surface chemical state of irradiated polymer. Surface color was changed from the yellow to the dark brown and the transmittance of UV ray in the range UV-A($320\sim400nm$) decreased more than 80% after ion implantation.

The praseodymium-doped $TiO_2$ photocatalyst samples, which could degrade methyl orange under UV irradiation, were prepared by sol-microwave method for improving the photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$. The resulting materials were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectra, Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) and Ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-vis DRS). It was found Pr doping retarded the growth of crystalline size and the phase transformation from anatase to rutile, and narrowed the band gap energy. Praseodymium doping brought about remarkable improvement in the photoactivity. The optimal dopant amount of Pr was 2% by molar of cement and the calcination temperature was $500^{\circ}C$ for the best photocatalytic activity. The improvement of photocatalytic activity was ascribed to the occurrence of lattice distortion and the effective containment of the recombination of the electron-hole by $Pr^{3+}$.
The surface chemistry of D2O dosed Zircaloy-4 (Zry-4) surface followed by Ar-ion bombardment and annealing was studied by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). In the XPS study, Ar-ion bombardment caused decrease of the oxygen on the surface region of Zry-4 and therefore led to change the oxidation states of the zirconium from oxide to metallic form. In addition, oxidation states of zirconium were changed to lower oxidation states of zirconium due to depopulation of oxygen on the surface region by annealing. Up to about 787 K, the bulk oxygen diffused out to the subsurface region and after this temperature, the oxygen on the surface of Zry-4 was depopulated. UPS study showed that the valence band spectrum of the D2O exposed Zry-4 exhibited a dominant peak at around 13 eV and no clear Fermi edge was detected. After stepwise Ar+ sputtering processes, the decrease of the oxygen on the surface of Zry-4 led to suppress the dominant peak around 13 eV, the peak around 9 eV and develop a new peak of the metallic Zr 4d state (20.5-21.0 eV) at the Fermi level.
We present a rapid biogenic method for the production of nanoscale gold particles using pear extract. The formation and stability of pear-derived gold nanoparticles (Pear-AuNPs) were monitored by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. Their morphology, elemental composition and crystalline phase were determined by transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and selected area electron diffraction. The average core size of crystalline Pear-AuNPs was in the range of $10{\pm}5\;nm$ and the observed morphology was spherical. The X-ray photoelectron spectrum showed a strong peak for the pure 'Au' phase. The circular dichroism spectrum indicated the natural capping ability of the pear extract, which generated peptide-gold nanoparticles. These nanoparticles were stable in aqueous solution for two months. A cell viability assay of Pear-AuNPs showed biocompatibility with human embryonic kidney 293 cells. Accordingly, this eco-friendly process for the bio-mimetic production of Pear-AuNPs is nontoxic in nature; consequently, it will find potential application in nano-biotechnology.
Well-dispersed Ag3VO4 nanoparticles @polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers were synthesized by an easily controlled, template-free method as a photo-catalyst for the degradation of methylene blue. Their structural, optical, and photocatalytic properties have been studied by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy equipped with rapid energy dispersive analysis of X-ray, photoluminescence, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The characterization procedures revealed that the obtained material is PAN nanofibers decorated by Ag3VO4 nanoparticles. Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue investigated in an aqueous solution under irradiation showed 99% degradation of the dye within 75 min. Finally, the antibacterial performance of Ag3VO4 nanoparticles @PAN composite nanofibers was experimentally verified by the destruction of Escherichia coli. These results suggest that the developed inexpensive and functional nanomaterials can serve as a non-precious catalyst for environmental applications.
