This paper presents a sensor fusion method to recognize a cylindrical object a CCD camera, a laser slit beam and ultrasonic sensors on a pan/tilt device. For object recognition with a vision sensor, an active light source projects a stripe pattern of light on the object surface. The 2D image data are transformed into 3D data using the geometry between the camera and the laser slit beam. The ultrasonic sensor uses an ultrasonic transducer array mounted in horizontal direction on the pan/tilt device. The time of flight is estimated by finding the maximum correlation between the received ultrasonic pulse and a set of stored templates - also called a matched filter. The distance of flight is calculated by simply multiplying the time of flight by the speed of sound and the maximum amplitude of the filtered signal is used to determine the face angle to the object. To determine the position and the radius of cylindrical objects, we use a statistical sensor fusion. Experimental results show that the fused data increase the reliability for the object recognition.
In this paper, a new multi-fingered robot hand using ultrasonic motors and its control system are developed. The developed robot hand has four fingers and fifteen articulated joints. The distal joint of each finger is directly driven by ultrasonic motor and all joints except the distal joint has low transmission gear mechanism with the motor. The developed robot hand has several advantages in size compared to a hand using conventional DC motors, and in performance compared to a hand using tendons to drive joints. A VME-bus based hand control system and ultrasonic motor driver are also developed. The performance of the hand is confirmed by using the developed control system in real-time.
This paper proposes a statistical regression method for classifying pillars and vehicles in parking area using a single ultrasonic sensor. There are three types of information provided by the ultrasonic sensor: TOF, the peak and the width of a pulse, from which 67 different features are extracted through segmentation and data preprocessing. The classification using the multiple SVM and the multinomial logistic regression are applied to the set of extracted features, and has achieved the accuracy of 85% and 89.67%, respectively, over a set of real-world data. The experimental result proves that the proposed feature extraction and classification scheme is applicable to the object classification using an ultrasonic sensor.
Indoor real-time positioning for multiple targets is required to realize human-robot symbiosis. This study firstly presents positioning accuracy on an autonomous mobile robot controlled by 3-D coordinates that is obtained by a real-time indoor positioning system with spread spectrum (SS) ultrasonic signals communicated by code-division multiple access. Although many positioning systems have been investigated, the positioning system with the SS ultrasonic signals can measure identified multiple 3-D positions in every 70 ms with noise tolerance and error within 100 mm. This system is also robust to occlusion and environmental changes. However, thus far, the positioning errors in an autonomous mobile robot, controlled by these systems using the SS ultrasonic signals, have not been evaluated as an experimental study. Therefore, a positioning experiment for trajectory control is conducted using an autonomous mobile robot and our positioning system. The effectiveness of this positioning method for robot self-localization is shown, from this experiment, because the average control error between the target position and the robot's position at 29 mm is obtained.
This paper proposes a new algorithm for ultrasonic sensors arranged on ring frame to identify obstacles surrounding itself by TOFs (time of flight). The ring frame has multiple channels consisting of a transmitter and a receiver. When the transmitter of a selected channel transmits ultrasonic signal, the TOFs of reflected signals from obstacles are acquired by the receiver of the channel. The process continues for all channels consecutively. Then, by using parabolic curve fitting of TOFs of all channel, the proposed algorithm not only calculates distances from multiple obstacles, but also identifies if the shape of obstacles are point or plane by the coefficients of the curve. By the experiment using 16 ultrasonic transceivers on the ring frame in the environment of two poles and two planes, we show the feasibility of the proposed scheme.
The multiple block localization method in a wide area for multiple robots using iGS is proposed in this paper. The iGS is developed for the indoor global localization using ultrasonic and RF sensors. To measure the distance between a mobile robot and a beacon, the tag on the mobile robot wakes up one beacon to send out the ultrasonic signal and measures the traveling time from the beacon to the mobile robot. As the number of robots is increased, the sampling time of localization also becomes longer. Note that only one robot can localize its own position calling beacons one by one during each of the sampling interval. This is a severe constraint for the localization of multiple robots in a wide area. This paper proposes an efficient localization algorithm for the multiple robots in a wide area which can be divided into multiple blocks. For a given block, a master beacon is designated to synchronize robots. By the access of the synchronization signal, each beacon in the selected group sends out an ultrasonic signal. When the robots in the block receive the ultrasonic signal, they can calculate their own locations based on the distances to the beacons, which are obtained by the multiplication of flight time and velocity of the ultrasonic signal. The efficiency of the algorithm is verified through the real experiments.
The objective of this study is to compare atomization characteristics for differently made an ultrasonic twin-fluid nozzle. A spray system, an ultrasonic system, and three different type(Nozzle type, Tube type. Conventional type)are made and compared experimental and numerical results. In this investigation, the measurement and numerical analysis of spray droplet are to analyze the effects of ultrasonic energy on the agricultural atomization spray system in order to protection of dispersion droplets. It is clarified that ultrasonic energy forcing into a nozzle is valid to obtain atomization enchancement. As the result of comparing the experimental and numerical result, it is confirmed that nozzle type is highest efficiency than that of tube type and conventional type, also well fit, respectively.
