Ultrasonic sensors are widely used in various applications due to advantages of low cost, simplicity in construction, mechanical robustness, and little environmental restriction in usage. But the main purposes of the noncontact sensing are rather narrowly confined within object detection and distance measurement. For the application of object recognition, ultrasonic sensors exhibit several shortcomings of poor directionality which results in low spatial resolution of objects, and specularity which gives frequent erroneous range readings. To resolve these problems in object recognition, an array of the sensor has been used. To improve the spatial resolution, more number of sensors are used in essence throughout the various devices of the sensor arrays. Under the disguise of a fixed number of the sensors, the array can be shifted mechanically in several steps. In this paper we propose a practical sensor resolution enhancement method using an electronic circuit accompanying the sensor array. The circuit changes the transmitter output voltage in several steps. Using the known sensor characteristics, a set of different return echo signals provide enhanced spatial resolution. The improvement is obtained with neither the cost of the increased number of the sensors nor extra mechanical devices.
Ultrasonic sensors are becoming indispensable components in every sector of automation equipments due to many advantages. But the main purposes of the noncontact sensing device are rather narrowly confined within object detection and distance measurement. To widen the realm of the applications to object recognition, ultrasonic sensors need to improve the recognition resolution to a certain amount. To resolve the problem of spatial resolution restriction, an increased number of the sensors in the forms of a linear array or 2-dimensional array of the sensor has been used. Also better resolution has been obtained by shifting the array in several steps using mechanical actuators. For an object recognition using ultrasonic sensors, measurements of distance, shift, oblique angle in certain ranges should be obtained. But a little attention has been paid to the measurement of angles. In this paper we propose a practical method for an object angular value detection in addition to distance measurement in ultrasonic sensor array system with little additional hardware burden. Using the established measurement look-up table for the variations of distance, shift, angle and transmitter voltages for each sensor characteristics, a set of different return echo signals for adjacent receivers are processed to provide enhanced angular value reading for an object.
The mobile robots to rescue a life in a disaster area and to explore planets demand high mobility as well as recognition of the environment. To avoid unknown obstacles exactly in unknown environment, accurate sensing is required. This paper proposes a sensor fusion to recognize unknown obstacles accurately by using low-cost sensors. Ultrasonic sensors and infrared sensors are used in this paper to avoid obstacles. If only one of these sensors is used alone, it is not useful fer the mobile robots to complete their tasks in the real world since the surrounding environment in the real world is complex and composed of many kinds of materials. So infrared sensor may not recognize transparent or reflective obstacles and ultrasonic sensor may not recognize narrow obstacles, far example, columns of small diameter. Therefore, I selected six ultrasonic sensors and five infrared sensors to detect obstacles. Then, I fused ultrasonic sensors with infrared sensors in order that both advantages and disadvantages of each sensor are utilized together. In fusing sensors, fuzzy algorithm is used to cope with the uncertainties of each sensor. TAMRY which is terrain-adaptive mobile robot is used as the mobile robot for experiments.
Although ship's draught information onboard is substantial for both the safety of navigation and the estimation of loaded cargoes, its accuracy depends, in conventional surveying method, on the skillfulness of observers and the condition of the sea surface round the vessel. To obtain more accurate information accessibly, measuring instruments with sophisticated sensors such as mechanical, electronic and ultrasonic transducers have been developed. However, they have still limitation in accuracy and in making up a system due to the complexity of processing signal. In this paper, we propose a new technique for analyzing ultrasonic pulse signal, in order to improve the measurement accuracy and simplify a remote sensing system of draught by ultrasonic waves. In this technique, pulse signal is translated into phase curve which is composed of the phase value defined in time domain. Then, the time interval between two signals different in waveform, is waveform, is analytically determined by calculating average time difference on phase curves. Also, analytical procedure can be carried out in real time with the successive five data sampled at T/4, for high speed digital processing with computer and A/D converter. This technique is useful for measuring draught under the influence of sea condition and for interfacing its data briefly to the integrated bridge system.

Recently the water management department advised the water treatment industry to focus on deploy the chemical free and the environmentally responsible process to adopt on water treatment plants in every country. In this objective, water treatment process started using ultrasonic based phycocyanin extraction with fluorescence measurement techniques to detect the change in the yield of phycocyanin. This paper propose the design of optical filter model for fluorescence technique based immersive optical phycocyanin measurement sensor design. The proposed design uses the multi-wavelength sensor module for irradiating part, and this plays a role of removing a wavelength band other than 590 ~ 620 nm. The preliminary study on immersed phycocyanin sensor, the fluorescence value of picocyanin according to the ultrasonic intensity, treatment time and number of cells was measured using JM phycocyanin module to emulate the proposed design, and were compared performance of the proposed sensor emulation. In this design, the phycocyanin fluorescence value increased about 2.1 ~ 4.7 times as the ultrasonic treatment time increased as compared with JM phycocyanin module, and the phycocyanin fluorescence value within the analysis range was obtained by ultrasonic treatment within one minute.
Characteristics of fruit tree canopies are important target information for adjusting the pesticide application rate in variable rate spraying in orchards. Therefore, the target detection of the canopy characteristics is very important. In this study, a canopy volume measurement method for peach trees was presented and a variable rate spraying system based on canopy volume measurement was developed using the ultrasonic sensing, one of the most effective target detection method. Ten ultrasonic sensors and two flow control units were mounted on the orchard air-assisted sprayer. The ultrasonic sensors were used to detect the canopy diameters and the flow controls were used to modify the flow rate of the nozzles in real time. Two treatments were established: a constant application rate of $300Lha^{-1}$ was set as the control treatment for the comparison with the variable rate application at a $0.095Lm^{-3}$ canopy. The tracer deposition at different parts of peach trees and the tracer losses to the ground (between rows and within rows) were analyzed in detail under constant rate and variable rate application. The results showed that there were no significant differences between two treatments in the liquid distribution and the capability to reach the inner parts of the crop canopies.
The robot proximity and tactile sensors can be categorized into two groups: grip sensors and safety sensors. They have different performance requirements. The safety sensor should have long proximity range and fast response in order to secure enough response time before colliding with ambient objects. As for the tactile sensing function, the safety sensor need to be fast and compliant to mitigate the impact from a collision. In order to meet these requirements, we proposed and demonstrated a compliant integrated safety sensor suitable to human-friendly robots. An ultrasonic proximity sensor and a piezoelectric tactile sensor made of PVDF films have been integrated in a compliant PDMS structure. The implemented sensor demonstrated the maximum proximity range of 35 cm. The directional tolerance for 30 cm detection range was about ${\pm}15^{\circ}$ from the normal axis. The integrated PVDF tactile sensor was able to detect various impacts of up to 20 N in a controlled experimental setup.
A robust position-sensing system is proposed in this paper for ubiquitous mobile robots which move indoor as well as outdoor. The Differential GPS (DGPS) which has position estimation error of less than 5 m is a general solution when the mobile robots are moving outdoor, while an active beacon system (ABS) with embedded ultrasonic sensors is selected as an indoor positioning system. The switching from the outdoor to indoor or vice versa causes unstable measurements on account of the reference and algorithm changes. To minimize the switching time in the position estimation and to stabilize the measurement, a robust position-sensing system is proposed. In the system, to minimize the switching delay, the door positions are stored and updated in a database. The reliability and accuracy of the robust positioning system based on DGPS and ABS are verified through the real experiments using a mobile robot prepared for this research and demonstrated.
