Correlations Among Speed of Sound, Broadband Ultrasonic Attenuation, Broadband Ultrasonic Reflection, and Bone Density in Bovine Cancellous Bone

  • Correlations between acoustic properties and bone density have been investigated in bovine cancellous bone. Speed of sound (SOS), broadband ultrasonic attenuation (BUA), and broadband ultrasonic reflection (BUR) were measured in 10 defatted bovine cancellous bone specimens in vitro. SOS showed a significant correlation with the apparent density of the bone. A comparable correlation was observed between BUA and the apparent density. BUR was rather highly correlated with the apparent density. It was shown that BUR had a weak correlation with BUA and a significant correlation with SOS. This indicates that the parameter BUR can provide important information that may not be contained in BUA and SOS and, therefore, can be useful as an alternative diagnostic parameter of osteoporosis. As expected, a linear combination of all three ultrasonic parameters in a multiple regression model resulted in a significant improvement in predicting the apparent bone density.

다중반사특성을 이용한 새로운 초음파 거리 센서 (A New Ultrasonic Range Sensor Using Multiple Reflections)

  • This article describes the ultrasonic range sensor for the recognition of the Indoor environment, especially utilizing the multiple reflection properties of the sonar usually ignored as disturbances or noises. In this paper, we endow the ultrasonic range sensor with the active motion using the stepping servomechanism in order to get the multiple reflections with environment objects. Environment features such as target type, distance and azimuth based on the scanned one frame data of that multiple reflection patterns are recognized simultaneously.

  • 고체-고체 접촉계면의 특성을 평가하기 위하여 초음파 수직 입사에 의한 반사 투과법이 주로 이용되어왔다. 하지만 수직입사방법은 용접부 검사와 같은 현장적용에 한계가 있는 단점이 있다. 이러한 한계를 극복하기 위한 방법으로 초음파 경사입사법이 대안이 될 수 있다. 그러나 경사입사법의 경우, 초음파의 모드변환이 발생하고 수신신호는 접촉면의 수직 계면강성뿐만 아니라 수평 계면강성의 영향을 받으므로 이를 고려한 분석이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 경사입사에 따른 접촉계면에서의 초음파 반사와 투과특성에 대한 이론적 모델을 제안하였다. 그리고 경사입사에 대한 초음파 반사율 및 2 차 고조파 측정실험 결과 이론적 예측과 잘 일치함을 확인하였다. 결과적으로 경사입사법은 접촉계면 특성평가를 위한 효과적인 기법이라 할 수 있다.

회전 기물면을 이용한 초음파 집속기에 관한 연구 (A Study of Ultrasonic concentrator with Rotating parablic surace)

  • 본 연구는 강력한 초음파 음계를 형성시키는 것을 목적으로한 반사형 초음파 집속기에 관한 것이다. 이 집속기는 초음파반사의 임계각이 일어난 점을 경계로 하는 전반사가 일어나는 반사면만을 이용한 회전 기물체로 구성하였다. 그리고 초음파를 발생한 변환기의 형태에 따라 평판형 변환기에 적용되는 내측면 반사체와 원간형 변환기에 운용된 외측면 반사체의 2종으로 구분하여 집속기를 설계제작하고 측정하였다. 이 반사형 집속기는 plastics lens에 의한 투과형 집속기에 비하여 여러가지 장점을 갖이고 있다. 즉 재질에 유리나 금속을 사용하므로 높은 온도의 매체중은 물론 강력한 음계내에서 적용도가 크고 또 전반사를 이용하므로 집속효율이 커서 강력한 초음파 음계를 필요로 한 공업용 초음파 집속기로 이용될 것으로 사료된다.

평면 초음파를 이용한 미소 간극 측정 (Thickness Measurement of A Thin Layer Using Plane Ultrasonic waves)

  • This paper describes a new technique for thickness measurement of a very thin layer less than one-quarter of the wavelength of ultrasonic wave using ultrasonic pulse-echo method. The technique determines the thickness of a thin layer in a layered medium form the amplitudes of the total reflected waves from the back side layer of interst. Thickness of a very thin layer few inch deep inside the media can be measured without using a very high frequency ultrasonic transducer over 100MHz which must be used in the conventional techniques for the precision measurement of a thin layer. The method also requires no inversion process to extract the thickness from the waveform of the reflected waves, so that it makes possible on-line measurement of the thickness of the layer.

  • This paper describes a new technique for measurement of the displacement less than one-quarter of the wavelength of ultrasonic wave using ultrasonic pulse-echo method. The technique determines the displacement of a journal bearing from the amplitudes of the total reflected waves from the surface of journal inside the bearing. Vibration of journal bearing can be measured without using a very high frequency ultrasonic transduce over 100MHz which must be used in the conventional techniques for the precision measurement of a small displacement. The method also requires no inversion process to extract the thickness from the waveforms of the reflected waves, so that it makes possible on-line measurement of the vibration of journal bearing.

Estimation of Hysteretic Interfacial Stiffness of Contact Surfaces

  • This paper proposes an ultrasonic method for measurement of linear and hysteretic interfacial stiffness of contacting surfaces between two steel plates subjected to nominal compression pressure. Interfacial stiffness was evaluated by the reflection and transmission coefficients obtained from three consecutive reflection waves from solid-solid surface using the shear wave. A nonlinear hysteretic spring model was proposed and used to define the quantitative interfacial stiffness of interface with the reflection and transmission coefficients. Acoustic model for 1-D wave propagation across interfaces is developed to formulate the reflection and transmission waves and to determine the linear and nonlinear hysteretic interfacial stiffness. Two identical plates are put together to form a contacting surface and pressed by bolt-fastening to measure interfacial stiffness at different states of contact pressure. It is found from experiment that the linear and hysteretic interfacial stiffness are successfully determined by the reflection and transmission coefficient at the contact surfaces through ultrasonic pulse-echo measurement.

  • A new ultrasonic pulse-echo technique was developed and described for vibration measurement of the suspension assembly in hard disk drives. The method is based upon the difference in magnitude of two consecutive reflection waves from a moving object(suspension), while the traditional ultrasonic vibrometer uses the phase shift of the reference wave and the reflection wave. A cone-shape delay line is designed to access the small structure. A simple mathematical model is presented and analyzed with experimental results to show the feasibility of the method. The advantages of this ultrasonic vibration measurement method are relatively high resolution, low cost, and ease of implementation comparing with the Laser Doppler vibrometer.

  • A numerical model is introduced to simulate propagation, reflection, and scattering of elastic waves in solids. The model consists of mass points and linear springs, interconnected with in a lattice structure; hence, its name, the mass-spring lattice model (MSLM). The MSLM has successfully been applied to the numerical simulation and visualization of various elastic wave phenomena involved in ultrasonic nondestructive testing (NDT). This method is useful to simulate, design, or analyze actual testing. Some representative examples of numerical simulation using the MSLM are presented, and future work necessary for its further development Is addressed.
