  • In this study, ageing characteristics of an industrial hollow-fiber membrane module were investigated after 50 months of drinking water production. For this purpose, the industrial module was opened to make 18 smaller modules with hollow-fibers taken from different parts of the industrial module. These modules were probed by the use of a magnetic nanoparticle (NP) challenge test based on magnetic susceptibility (K) measurement of permeate. No magnetic susceptibility was detected in permeate when the challenge test was performed on an intact membrane module, indicating the complete retention of nanoparticles by the membrane. The compromised membrane module can be successfully detected by means of magnetic susceptibility measurement in permeate. So, this study clearly demonstrates that ageing of ultrafiltration membranes can be monitored by measuring the magnetic susceptibility of permeate from an ultrafiltration membrane module. These results showed that the hollow fibers in the center zones of the bundle would age faster than those in the outer zones around the bundle. This result is in agreement with numerical simulation (Daurelle et al. 2011).

  • Electrodialysis of acetic acid was studied to find out the trend of the transport of organic acids through ultrafiltration and ion exchange membranes. The net transport rate of acetic acid was determined from the electro-migration velocity relative to the electro-osmotic flow rate through the membrane. Electro-osmosis flows through ultrafiltration membranes were from the anodic side to the cathodic side in the presence of electric field. The surface of ultrafiltration membrane was measured by the electro-osmotic flow to be charged negatively. Different transport behaviors of acetic acid were found with the ultrafiltration membranes of different materials. In general, regenerated cellulose membranes (YM series) were more effective than polysulfone membranes (PM series) for the transport of acetic acid. The transport of acetic acid was affected by electric strength, distance between the electrodes, surface area of electrode, temperature, and pore size of membrane. The transport rate through the ion exchange membrane was 1.5 to 3 times of those through the ultrafiltration membranes at the constant current of 150 mA in the experimental ranges. The transport rate of acetic acid through the ion exchange membrane increased by 10% with a pulse electric field of 10 sec/hr.

  • Enantioselective macromer of trimesic acid was prepared using S(-) menthol with trimesoyl chloride on polyimide (PI) ultrafiltration membrane. The chemical composition of macromer as well as polyimide ultrafiltration membrane was determined by ATR-FTIR Spectroscopy. The optical resolution of chiral alcohols was performed in pressure driven process. The effect of monomer solutions concentration, effect of air-drying time of S(-) menthol solution, effect of reaction time, effect of operating pressure, effect of feed concentration of racemate on the performance of macromer was studied. The synthesised material exhibits separation of chiral alcohols (menthol ~23% and sobrelol ~21%).

  • Performance evaluation of four commercially available tubular membranes (AFC 80, AFC 30, PU 608, ES 404) was accomplished in self-assembled membrane testing unit. Effects of varying transmembrane pressure, feed concentration and anion type were investigated. Aqueous solutions of salts such as calcium chloride, calcium sulfate, tin chloride and tin sulfate were prepared for this study. It was noted that the investigated parameters e.g., pressure and concentration had significant effects on membrane's performance. Nevertheless, anion type effectively played its role in the rejection of salts since salt having SO4-2 anions had a better rejection than the salts containing Cl-1. It is observed that rejection was dominated by Donnon exclusion for strongly charged nanofiltration membranes whereas for weakly charged ultrafiltration membranes, size exclusion was the key mechanism to reject the ions.

  • This study investigated effects of NaOH cleaning on the intrinsic permeability of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes and flux recoveries and membrane resistances under various conditions encountered during ultrafiltration in water treatment plants. The NaOH cleaning using 10,000 mg/L NaOH led to discoloration of PVDF membranes and had little effect on water flux. The NaOH cleaning was efficient in removing the fouling layer caused by humic water. However, long filtration induced a fouling layer that was not removed easily by NaOH cleaning. The lower temperature during filtration yielded rapid increases in transmembrane pressure and decreases in NaOH cleaning efficiency. The alkaline cleaning of PVDF changed the membrane properties such as the hydrophobicity and morphology. Foulant properties, operational conditions such as temperature, and chemical agents should be considered for cleaning strategies for PVDF applied in water treatment.

  • The separation characteristics were investigated with the variations of pressure and temperature using ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis membrane module sets composed of different membrane types and materials. TDS, T-N and COD removal efficiencies were not affected and low with the change of temperature and pressure in case of using UF modules contained in module set 1, 2, 3. TDS, T-N and COD removal efficiencies were very high in RO modules. The final water quality of acrylic wastewater was satisfied within the discharge limit value of plant wastewater. It was known that membrane module sets could be used for the reuse of wastewater.

  • The ultrafiltration characteristics of wafer processing wastewater produced from semicon¬ductor industry was investigated for wastewater reuse. Using the pilot-scale ultrafiltration system con¬taining poly sulfone hollow fiber membranes (MWCO : 10,000, 20,000, 30,(00), the membrane performance, such as flux, rejection rate and concentration factor for flux was examined. The SDhs, turbidity, electrical conductivity and concentration of Si particles were measured, and the possibility of permeate reuse was validated from the experimental results. It was shown that the flux was recovered by the sweeping with air and water effectively. The permeate flux of 30,000 MWCO membrane was about 5 times higher than that of 10,000 and 20,000 MWCO membranes. The concentration of Si particle in the saw wastewater was analyzed 3.8-5.6 mg/$\ell$ and that of Si particle in the permeate was analyzed less than 0.2${\mu}g$/$\ell$. This means the rejection of silicon particle was over 96%.

  • Dietary fibers (DF) have been used as functional food components due to the various health promoting activities. Dietary fibers have been separated from the peels of Korean tangerine by employing ultrafiltration (UF) membranes. Optimum conditions in a batch type ultrafiltration unit using YM100 (molecular weight cut-off, MWCO=100,000), YM 10 (MWCO=10,000) and YM1 (MWCO=1,000) membranes were : transmembrane pressure 7.5 psi, temperature of the peel extracts $35^{\circ}C$, and pH of the peel extract 3.0, respectively. The flux in YM 10 membrane unit was higher than that in YM 10 or YM 1 membrane unit. However, YM 100 membrane was superior to YM 10 or YM 1 membrane with respect to the recovery of the retentate and the contents of DF The contents of DF in the tangerine peel extract, in the 170 mesh retentate, and in the YM 100 retentate were shown to be 33.4%, 18.5% and 8.4% based on dry matter, respectively. Most dietary fibers were recovered at the separation stages of 170 mesh and YM 100.

  • Effect of water back-flushing period (FT) was investigated in hybrid water treatment process of carbon ultrafiltration and polypropylene (PP) beads coated with photocatalyst, and membrane effect was studied by comparing the previous studies with carbon microfiltration or alumina ultrafiltration, microfiltration membranes. FT 6 min was the most effective to control initial membrane fouling and optimal condition because the membrane fouling resistance was low until initial 60 min and the maximum total permeate volume was acquired at this FT. The turbidity treatment efficiency was high beyond 98.6%, and did not depend on FT, which was same with the previous result of carbon or alumina microfiltration. The organic matters treatment efficiency was the highest value of 98.2% at FT 6 min, which was almost same trend with the previous result of alumina microfiltration. Then the organic matters treatment efficiency of carbon microfiltration was the minimum at no back-flushing (NBF) and increased as decreasing FT, but that of alumina ultrafiltration was the maximum at NBF and also increased as decreasing FT. Therefore it means that water back-flushing effect on the organic matters treatment efficiency had a different mechanism depending on pore size in spite of the same material membranes.
