초고분자량 폴리에닐렌 미세구조가 변형과 마모에 미치는 영향 (Effect of crystalline lamellar orientation on the creep and wear of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene)

  • 초고분자량 폴리에틸렌(Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene)은 인공관절 라이너에 쓰이는 대표적 생체재료이다. 초고분자량 폴리에틸렌의 변형과 마모에 영향을 주는 인자에 대한 기본적 연구를 위하여 본 연구에서는 미세구조 결정상의 정도와 결정구조 방향성에 따른 초고분자량 폴리에틸렌의 크리프 변형 및 마모 특성의 연구를 행하였다. 압출 제작된 초고분자량 폴리에틸렌 봉(extruded UHMWPE rod)단면의 중앙(center) 부분과 원주(periphery)부분으로부터 각각 직사각형 및 원통형의 시편을 제작하여 크리프 실험과 마모 실험을 실시하였다. 원주 시편의 크리프 변형율은 중앙 시편의 크리프 변형율보다 11% 크며 (p<0.05), 마모양도 원주 시편이 중앙 시편보다 두 배나 큰 것으로(p<0.05)관측되었다. 이 결과들로부터 초고분자량 폴리에틸렌의 크리프 변형과 마모가 미세 결정구조 방향성에 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다.

  • The influence of gamma-irradiation sterilization on the creep and wear performance of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) was investigated by conducting the dynamic compressive creep tests and pin-on-disc sliding wear tests. The changes of microstructure property, relative crystallinity, oxidation index, percent crosslinking, were also measured and the relationship between these and creep and wear results was discussed.

450-500nm의 최대흡수를 가지는 순수 폴리올레핀 소재용 초소수성 오렌지 염료의 합성 (Synthesis of Super Hydrophobic Orange Dyes Having Maximum Absorption at 450-500nm for Pure Polyolefin Fibers)

  • Novel super hydrophobic orange dyes having maximum absorption band at 450-500nm were synthesized to dye polyolefin fibers such as polypropylene and ultra high molecular weight polyethylene fibers, using 4-alkylanilines and ${\beta}$-naphthol. Their absorption spectra at visible range showed almost the same, which meant that the alkyl substituents introduced to chromophore did not affect on color appearance of the dyes. Considering both color strength and wash fastness, the decyl-substituted dye was determined as the optimum one practically. From the dyeing results at various conditions, the optimum dyeing was $130^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour with 5% owf of dyes. The good fastness ratings to washing, rubbing were obtained showing 4-5 for both fibers. Light fastness was also acceptable giving rating 3-4 for polypropylene fibers and rating 3 for ultra high molecular weight polyethylene fibers.

  • A new monoazo violet dye optimized for polyolefin fibers such as polypropylene and ultra high molecular weight polyethylene fibers was synthesized and its dyeability was investigated. Two hexyl groups were introduced to coupler, 2,5-dimethoxyaniline, in order to increase hydrophobicity of the dye. The maximum absorption wavelength was appeared at 580nm, which meant that the dye showed violet color. From the dyeing results at various conditions, the optimum dyeing was determined as $130^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour with 5% owf of dyes. The good fastness ratings to washing, rubbing were obtained showing at least 4 for both fibers. Light fastness was acceptable for polypropylene fibers giving ratings 3~4. However, relatively poor light fastness was obtained in case of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene fibers showing ratings 2.

  • The dyeability and fastness properties of super-hydrophobic navy dyes having different length of alkyl groups were investigated on ultra high molecular weight polyethylene fabrics. Those dyes exhibited strong color strength in the wavelength of mainly 550~650nm, which meant that they were navy color. From the results accomplished under various dyeing conditions, it can be concluded that those dyes have higher affinity on the fibers at $130^{\circ}C$ than at the lower dyeing temperature. Considering processing time and thermal damage of the fibers, one hour is good enough to obtain full strength of color. Maximum color strength was obtained at 2~3%owf of pure dyes. Except for the rub fastness under dry condition, all fastness such as to washing and light showed as good as of 4~5 ratings.

Relationship between Oxidation and Wear of Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene for Total Joint Arthroplasty

  • The most widely-used orthopaedic grade polymer bearing liner material, ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), for the total joint arthroplasty degrades after gamma-irradiation sterilization through the progressive oxidation in a shelf and in vivo. Oxidative degradation makes UHMWPE brittle and leads to decrease in mechanical properties. In this study the relationship between post-gamma-irradiation aging time and wear of UHMWPE was investigated. Six retrieved polyethylene hip liners implanted for 3-16 years and then stored in air for 1.5-6.5 years until tests were used. Two types of pin-on-disk wear testing were conducted by the uni-directional repeat pass rotating and by the linear reciprocating stainless steel disks against stationary polyethylene pins under 4Mpa at 1Hz with bovine serum lubrication in ambient environment. Wear of retrieved polyethylene hip liners does not have direct correlation with in vivo or total aging time. Linear reciprocal sliding motion generated more remarkable wear than uni-directional repeat pass sliding motion. It indicates that kinematic motion affects very crucially on the wear of aged UHMWPE having brittle white band region.

감마선 조사 방법에 따른 정형외과용 초고분자량 폴리에틸렌의 미세구조 변화 (Microstructural Changes in Orthopaedic-Grade Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) according to Gamma-Irradiation Method)

  • 본 연구에서는 인공관절 베어링 부품으로 가장 널리 사용되는 초고분자량 폴리에틸렌(UHMWPE)을 대상으로 6가지 감마선 조사 방법에 따른 UHMWPE의 미세구조 변화를 비교 분석하였다. 감마선을 조사하지 않은 폴리에틸렌(UGI)과 비교하여, 기존의 멸균처리에 해당하는 공기 중 상온에서 감마선 조사한 폴리에틸렌(AR)의 결정화도와 가교 정도는 유의한 차이를 보이며 증가하였다. 감마선 조사 환경 중, 상온에서의 산소(AR)와 진공상태(VR) 영향을 비교하면, AR과 VR의 결정화도는 유의한 차이가 없었으며, VR의 가교정도는 유의한 차이를 보이며 증가하였다. 감마선 조사 환경 중, 진공상태에서의 상온(VR)과 극저온(V77) 영향을 비교하면, 결정화도와 가교정도 모두 유의한 차이가 없었다. 그러나, VR과 V77에서의 가교정도는 AR에서의 가교정도보다 유의한 차이를 보이며 증가하였다. 3가지 감마선 조사 환경에 대하여 감마선 조사 이후 열처리(/S) 영향을 비교하면, 결정화도는 AR/S와 VR/S에서 유의한 차이가 없었으나, V77/S에서는 유의한 차이를 보이며 감소하였다. 또한, 가교정도는 AR/S와 V77/S에서 유의한 차이를 보이며 증가하였으며, VR/S에서는 유의한 차이가 없었다.
