  • The ultra-drawing process of an ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) gel film was examined by incorporating linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and $BaTiO_3$ nanoparticles. The effects of LLDPE and the draw ratios on the morphological development and mechanical properties of the nanocomposite membrane systems were investigated. By incorporating $BaTiO_3$ nanoparticles in the UHMWPE/LLDPE blend systems, the ultra-drawing process provided a highly extended, fibril structure of UHMWPE chains to form highly porous, composite membranes with well-dispersed nanoparticles. The ultra-drawing process of UHMWPE/LLDPE dry-gel films desirably dispersed the highly loaded $BaTiO_3$ nanoparticles in the porous membrane, which could be used to form multi-layered structures for electronic applications in various embedded, printed circuit board (PCB) systems.

  • Hollow fiber was prepared from the blend of a high density polyethylene (HDPE)/ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). The changes in the morphology and mechanical property of the hollow fiber were investigated. The commercial product (Sterapore), having a high water permeability, was analyzed with viscosity measurement and FT-IR. The molecular weight of Sterapore was very high and its surface was coated with a vinyl alcohol/vinyl acetate copolymer. The content of UHMWPE in the HDPE/UHMWPE blend was limited below 10 wt%. In order to improve the dispersion of UHMWPE, a mineral oil should be introduced in the blend. The morphology and mechanical property of the hollow fiber of HDPE/UHMWPE blend were similar to those of the commercial product.

  • Novel ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/zirconia composites were previously prepared by the in situ polymerization of ethylene using a Ti-based Ziegler-Natta catalyst supported on to the surface of zirconia, as a bearing material for artificial joints. Tribological tests revealed that a uniform dispersion of zirconia in UHMWPE markedly increased the wear resistance. The effects of zirconia content on the oxidation behavior of the ${\gamma}$-ray-treated UHMWPE/zirconia composite surfaces were examined. The oxidation index that estimates the oxidation degree as the content of total carbonyl compounds was monitored using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflectance. The changes in the surface composition due to the oxidation were confirmed by electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis. The extent of oxidation decreased with increasing zirconia content, which was attributed to the increased crystallinity as well as the decreased polymer portion of the UHMWPE/zirconia composites.

  • We have investigated the dynamic mechanical behavior of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) irradiated with varying doses of gamma rays. A relaxation peak in the loss factor curve, which has not been reported previously in the literature, is observed at a temperature above the crystal melting temperature. The peak is unique to UHMWPE and appears to be related to the high degree of entanglement. Because the temperature and intensity of the peak are reduced by irradiation-induced chain scission and crosslinking, respectively, we believe that the peak is associated with disentanglement relaxation. The behavior of the storage modulus in the melt state agrees with the classical theory of rubber elasticity.

  • In this study, the microstructural changes in orthopaedic-grade ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) were compartively investigated for six different gamma-irradiation methods. Compared with un-irradiation (UGI), conventional gamma-irradiation in air room temperature (AR) induced statistically significant increases of relative crystallinity and percent crosslinking in UHMWPE. Vacuum environment (VR) during gamma-irradiation significantly increased the percent crosslinking in UHMWPE. Vacuum extreme low temperature (V77) during gamma-irradiation induced no significant changes in both relative crystallinity and percent crosslinking of UHMWPE but the percent crosslinking of UHMWPE in VR and V77 was significantly larger than that in AR. Post-irradiation stabilization process significantly increased the relative crystallinity of UHMWPE in V77, and it also significantly increased the percent crosslinking of UHMWPE in AR and V77.

  • The thermomechanical property, morphology, and gas permeability of nanocomposites of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) with two different organoclays are compared. Hexamethylene benzimidazole-mica ($C_{16}BIMD-Mica$) and Cloisite 25A were used as reinforcing fillers in the formation of UHMWPE hybrid films. Dispersions of organoclays with UHMWPE were carried out by using the solution intercalation method at different organoclay contents to produce nano-scale composites. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs show that some of the clay layers are dispersed homogeneously within the polymer matrix on the nano-scale, although some clay particles are agglomerated. We also found that the addition of only a small amount of organoclay is enough to improve the thermomechanical property and gas barrier of the UHMWPE hybrid films. In general, Cloisite 25A is more effective than $C_{16}BIMD-Mica$ in increasing both the thermomechanical property and the gas barrier in a UHMWPE matrix.

  • To estimate the true wear rate of polyethylene acetabular cups used in total hip arthroplasty, the dynamic compressive creep deformation of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) was quantified as a function of time, load amplitude, and radial location of the specimen in the extruded rod stock. These data were also compared with the creep behavior of polyethylene observed under static loading. Total creep strains under dynamic loading were only 64%, 70%, and 61% of the total creep strains under static loading at the same maximum pressures of 2 MPa,4 MPa, and 8 MPa, respectively. Specimens cut from the periphery of the rod stock demonstrated more creep than those cut from the center when they were compressed in a direction parallel to the extrusion direction (vertical loading) whereas the opposite was observed when specimens were compressed in a direction perpendicular to the extrusion direction (transverse loading). These findings show that creep deformation of UHMWPE depends upon the orientation of the crystalline lamellae.

  • The most widely-used orthopaedic grade polymer bearing liner material, ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), for the total joint arthroplasty degrades after gamma-irradiation sterilization through the progressive oxidation in a shelf and in vivo. Oxidative degradation makes UHMWPE brittle and leads to decrease in mechanical properties. In this study the relationship between post-gamma-irradiation aging time and wear of UHMWPE was investigated. Six retrieved polyethylene hip liners implanted for 3-16 years and then stored in air for 1.5-6.5 years until tests were used. Two types of pin-on-disk wear testing were conducted by the uni-directional repeat pass rotating and by the linear reciprocating stainless steel disks against stationary polyethylene pins under 4Mpa at 1Hz with bovine serum lubrication in ambient environment. Wear of retrieved polyethylene hip liners does not have direct correlation with in vivo or total aging time. Linear reciprocal sliding motion generated more remarkable wear than uni-directional repeat pass sliding motion. It indicates that kinematic motion affects very crucially on the wear of aged UHMWPE having brittle white band region.

  • Because of bone resorption, wear of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene(UHMWPE) in total knee arthroplasty has been recognized as a major factor in long-term failure of knee implant. The surface damage and the following harmful wear debris of UHMWPE is largely related to contact stress. Most of the previous studies focused on the contact condition only at the articulating surface of UHMWPE. Recently, contact stress at the metal-backing interface has been implicated as one of major factors in UHMWPE wear. Therefore, the purpose of the is study is to investigate the effect of the contact stress for different thickness, conformity friction coefficient, and flexion degree of the UHMWPE component in total knee system, considering the contact conditions at both interfaces. In this study, a two-dimensional non-linear plane strain finite element model was developed. The results showed that the maximum value of von-Mises stress occurred below the articulating surface and the contact stress was lower for the more conforming models. All-polyethylene component showed lower stress distribution than the metal-backed component. With increased friction coefficient on the tibiofemoral contact surface, the maximum shear stress increased about twofold.
