  • The use of recycled-aggregate concrete is increasing faster than the development of appropriate design recommendations. In addition, recycled-aggregate and higher compressive strengths are two of the most desired characteristics to improve the use of concrete as a construction material. The paper reports limited experimental data on the shear capacity of high-strength recycled aggregate concrete beams. Ten beams were tested to determine their diagonal cracking and ultimate shear capacities. The variable in the test program were concrete strength(300, 500 and 700kgf/$cm^{2}$), and shear span/depth ratio (a/d : 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0). Test results indicate that the ACI Building code prediction of Eq.(11-3) and (11-5) for high-strength recycled aggregate concretes are unconservative for all beams (with concrete strength 300, 500 and 700kgf/$cm^{2}$, a/d ratios 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0). But Zsutty Equation for high-strength recycled aggregate concretes is conservative for all beams. The results of the experimental investigation on the cracking patterns for beams show that the angle that the critical inclined crack makes with the horizontal axis decreases with increasing a/d.

  • Flexural behavior of thin walled steel-concrete composite sections as cross sections for beams is investigated by conducting an experimental study supported by applicable analytical predictions. The experimental study consists of testing up to failure, simply supported beams of effective span 1440 mm under two point loading. The test specimens consisted of composite box and channel (with lip placed on tension side and compression side) sections, the behavior of which was compared with companion empty sections. To understand the role of shear connectors in developing the composite action, some of the composite sections were provided with novel simple bar type and conventional bolt type shear connectors in the shear zone of beams. Two RCC beams having equivalent ultimate moment carrying capacities as that of composite channel and box sections were also considered in the study. The study showed that the strength to weight ratio of composite beams is much higher than RCC beams and ductility index is also more than RCC and empty beams. The analytical predictions were found to compare fairly well with the experimental results, thereby validating the applicability of rigid plastic theory to cold-formed steel concrete composite beams.

  • This paper investigates the deflection of the steel-concrete composite truss beam (SCCTB) at the serviceability limit state. A precise solution for the distributed uplift force of the SCCTB, considering five different loading types, is first derived based on the differential and equilibrium equations. Furthermore, its approximate solution is proposed for practical applications. Subsequently, the shear slip effect corresponding to the shear stiffness of the stub connectors, uplift effect corresponding to the axial stiffness of the stub connectors and shear effect corresponding to the brace deformation of the steel truss are considered in the derivation of deflection. Formulae for estimating the SCCTB deflection are proposed. Moreover, based on the proposed formulae, a practical design method is developed to provide an effective and convenient tool for designers to estimate the SCCTB deflection. Flexure tests are carried out on three SCCTBs. It is observed that the SCCTB stiffness and ultimate load increase with an increase in the shear interaction factor. Finally, the reliability of the practical design method is accurately verified based on the available experimental results.

  • This paper discusses the failure mode of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with composite materials based on six experimental set-ups to determine the FRP-to-concrete bond strength. Interfacial bond behavior between concrete and CFRP plates was discussed. Shear test were performed with different concrete compressive strengths (21 MPa and 28 MPa) and different bonding length (100 mm, 150 mm, 200 mm, and 250 mm). Shear test results indicate that the effective bond length (the bond length beyond which the ultimate load does not increase) was estimated as $196{\sim}204\;mm$ through linear regression analysis. Failure mode of specimens occurred due to debonding between concrete and CFRP plates. Maximum bond stress is calculated as about $3.0{\sim}3.3\;MPa$ from the relationships between bond stress and slip. Finally, the interfacial bond-slip model between CFRP plates and concrete, which is governed debonding failure, has been estimated from shear tests. Average bond stress was about $1.86{\sim}2.04\;MPa$, the volume of slip between CFRP plate and concrete was about $1.45{\sim}1.72\;mm$, and the fracture energy was found to be about $1.35{\sim}1.71\;N/mm$.

  • Steel fiber and Polymer are used widely for the reinforcement material of RC structures because of its excellence of durability, serviceability as well as mechanical properties. Polymer-Steel fibrous high strength concrete beam's input ratio are 1.0%. The shear span-to-depth ratio are 1.5, 2.8 and 3.6, compressive strength of specimens 320kg/㎠, 436kgf/㎠ and 520kgf/㎠ in 28 days. The static test was carried out to measure the ultimate load, the initial load of flexural crack and of diagonal crack, from which crack patte군 and fracture modes are earned. Also, stress-strain, load-strain and load-deflection are examined during the test cracks(shear crack, flexural crack, and diagonal tension crack), when the load values are sketched according to the growth of crack. Result are as follows; (1) The failure modes of the specimens increase in rigidity and durability in accordance with the increase of mixing steel fiber and polymer. (2) The load of initial crack was the same as the theory of shear-crack strength (3) Polymer-Steel fibrous high strength concrete beams have increased the deflection and strain at failure load, improving the brittleness of the high strength concrete. (4) In this result of study, an additional study need to make a need formular because the study is different from ACI formular and Zsutty formular.

  • Steel systems composed of Reinforced Concrete column to Steel beam connection (RCS) have been raised as a structural system in the past few years. The optimized combination of steel-concrete structural elements has the advantages of both systems. Through beam and through column connections are two main categories in RCS systems. This study includes finite-element analyses of mentioned connection to investigate the seismic performance of RCS connections. The finite element model using ABAQUS software has been verified with experimental results of a through beam type connection tested in Taiwan in 2005. According to verified finite element model a parametric study has been carried out on five RCS frames with different types of lateral restraint system. The main objective of this study is to investigate the forming of plastic hinges, distribution of stresses, ductility and stiffness of these models. The results of current research showed good performance of composite systems including concrete column-steel beam in combination with steel shear wall and bracing system, are very desirable. The results show that the linear stiffness of models with X bracing and steel shear wall increase remarkably and their ultimate strength increase about three times rather than other RCS frames.

  • The application of high performance materials for the deck can represent a fair alternative to reduce the weight of the deck and improve the econimic efficiency of the bridge even if high performance materials are costly. In UHPC(Ultra High Performance Concrete) bridges, it is necessary to verify that exiting headed stud can be used to transfer longitudinal shear forces across the steel-concrete interface. In this paper, the push-out tests are performed to analisys the composite behavior between UHPC bridge deck and steel girder. The ultimate strength of test specimens is proportional to the diameter of headed studs in push-out test for static loading. Test results show that the shear strength of headed stud is improved for the case of normal concrete bridge decks.

  • Effects of annealing temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties through thickness of a cold-rolled Cu-3.0Ni-0.7Si alloy were investigated in detail. The copper alloy with thickness of 3 mm was rolled to 50 % reduction at ambient temperature without lubricant and subsequently annealed for 0.5h at $200{\sim}900^{\circ}C$. The microstructure of the copper alloy after annealing was different in thickness direction depending on an amount of the shear and compressive strain introduced by rolling; the recrystallization occurred first in surface regions shear-deformed largely. The hardness distribution of the specimens annealed at $500{\sim}700^{\circ}C$ was not uniform in thickness direction due to partial recrystallization. This ununiformity of hardness corresponded well with an amount of shear strain in thickness direction. The average hardness and ultimate tensile strength showed the maximum values of 250Hv and 450MPa in specimen annealed at $400^{\circ}C$, respectively. It is considered that the complex mode of strain introduced by rolling effected directly on the microstructure and the mechanical properties of the annealed specimens.

  • This paper presents a comprehensive work on determination of yield base shear coefficient and displacement ductility factor of three to eight story actual reinforced concrete buildings, instead of using generic frames. The building data is provided by a walkdown survey in different locations of the pilot areas. Very detailed three dimensional models of the selected buildings are generated by using the data provided in architectural and reinforcement projects. Capacity curves of the buildings are obtained from nonlinear static pushover analyses and each capacity curve is approximated with a bilinear curve. Characteristic points of capacity curve, the yield base shear capacity, the yield displacement and the ultimate displacement capacity, are determined. The calculated values of the yield base shear coefficients and the displacement ductility factors for directions into consideration are compared by those expected values given in different versions of Turkish Seismic Design Code. Although having sufficient lateral strength capacities, the deformation capacities of these typical mid-rise reinforced concrete buildings are found to be considerably low.

  • Despite of decrease in shear and moment strengths, most steel structural designers use web openings in beams because of economical benefit and requirement. The purpose of this study is to suggest the method of reinforcement of H-shape steel beams with a rectangular web opening. If shear predominates over bending, it is necessary to consider all possible combinations of shear force and bending moment acting at the opening. In this paper, the ultimate strength and behavior of perforated beams have been investigated according to parameters (ratio of M/V, opening width within opening height ratio D/h, various reinforcing types A/B/C/D/M/N/W). The results of this study are as follows ; 1. Deformation of H-shape steel beams with a rectangular web opening was greatly affected by not only bending but also shear. 2. SB1-2/3 series have little difference in the reinforced efficiency, but SB1-2E/3E series have difference in the reinforced efficiency according to the reinforcement type. 3. Efficiency of SB1-2E/3E series is determined by reinforcing types, which RB1-2E-B/M/C and RB1-3E-M/D/C specimens have good efficient. Reinforcing type of perforated beams chooses efficient method according to ratio of M/V and D/h.
