  • The p-version nonlinear finite element model has been developed to analyze the nonlinear behavior of simply supported RC slabs strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced plastic sheets. The shape function is adopted with integral of Legendre polynomials. The compression model of concrete is based on the Kupfer's yield criterion, hardening rule, and crushing condition. The cracking behavior is modeled by a smeared crack model. In this study, the fixed crack approach is adopted as being geometrically fixed in direction once generated. Each steel layer has a uniaxial behavior resisting only the axial force in the bar direction. Identical behavior is assumed fur tension and compression of steel according to the elastic modulus. The carbon fiber reinforced plastic sheets are considered as reinforced layers of equivalent thickness with uniaxial strength and rigidity properties in the present model. It is shown that the proposed model is able to adequately predicte the displacement and ultimate load of nonlinear simply supported RC slabs by a patch with respect to reinforcement ratio, thickness and angles of CFRP sheets.

  • The effectiveness of the repair scheme for the damaged captive-columns with CFRPs (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) was investigated in terms of response quantities such as strength, ductility, dissipated energy and stiffness degradation. Two 1/3 scale, one-story one-bay RC (Reinforced Concrete) frames were designed to represent the substandard RC buildings in Turkish building stock. The first one, which is the reference specimen, is the bare frame without infill wall. Partial infill wall with opening was constructed between the columns of the second frame and this caused captive column defect. Severe damage was observed with the concentration of shear cracks in the second specimen columns. Then, the damaged members were repaired by CFRP wrapping and retested. For the three test series, similar reversed cyclic lateral displacement under combined effect of axial load was applied to the top of the columns. Overall response of the bare frame was dominated by flexural cracks. Brittle type of shear failure in the column top ends was observed in the specimen with partial infill wall. It was observed that former capacity of damaged members of the second frame was recovered by the applied repair scheme. Moreover, ultimate displacement capacity of the damaged frame was improved considerably by CFRP wrapping.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on damage evolution laws of solid-web steel reinforced concrete (SRC) T-shaped columns along the direction of the web under various loadings. Ten specimens with a scale ratio of 1/2 and a shear span ratio of 2.5 were designed and fabricated. The influences of various parameters, including the axial compression ratio, steel ratio, and loading mode, were examined. The mechanical performances including load-displacement curve and energy dissipation capacity under the monotonic and low cyclic loadings were analyzed. Compared with the monotonic loading, bearing capacity, ultimate deformation capacity, and energy dissipation capacity of the specimens decrease to some extent with the increase of the displacement amplitude and the number of loading cycle. The results show that the damage process of the SRC T-shaped column can be divided into five stages, namely non-damage, slight-damage, steadily-developing-damage, severe-damage and complete-damage. Finally, based on the Park-Ang model, a modified nonlinear damage model which combines the maximum deformation with hysteretic energy dissipation is proposed by taking into account the dynamic influence of the aforementioned parameters. The results show that the modified model in this paper is more accurate than Park-Ang model and can better describe the damage evolution of SRC T-shaped columns.

  • This paper proposed a numerical investigation based on finite elements analysis (FEA) in order to study the punching shear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) flat slabs using ABAQUS and SAP2000 programs. Firstly, the concrete and the steel reinforcements were modeled by hexahedral 3D solid and linear elements respectively, and the nonlinearity of the used materials was considered. In order to validate this model, experimental results considered in literature were compared with the proposed FE model. After validation, a parametric study was performed. The parameters include the slab thickness, the flexure reinforcement ratios and the axial membrane loads. Then, to reduce the time of FEA, a simplified modelling using 3D layered shell element and shear hinge concept was also induced. The effect of the footings settlement was studied using the proposed simplified nonlinear model as a case study. Results of numerical models showed that increase of the slab thickness by 185.7% enhanced the ultimate load by 439.1%, accompanied with a brittle punching failure. The punching failure occurred in one of the tested specimens when the tensile reinforcement ratio increased more than 0.65% and the punching capacity improved with increasing the horizontal flexural reinforcement; it decreased by 30% with the settlement of the outer footings.

  • As a new type of concrete material, basic magnesium sulfate cement concrete (BMSC) has the advantages, such as early strength, high strength, good toughness and crack resistance. However, it is unclear about the degradation of the mechanical properties of BMSC columns, which is exposed to the natural environment for several years. In order to apply this new concrete to practical engineering, six large-eccentricity compressive columns of BMSC were studied. The mechanical properties such as the crack propagation, failure morphology, lateral displacement and bearing capacity of BMSC column were studied. The results show that the degradation rate of ultimate load of BMSC column is from 6% to 7%. The degradation rate of the stiffness of the column is from 6% to 13%. With the increase of compressive strength of BMSC, the axial displacement and lateral displacement are gradually reduced. The calculation model of bearing capacity of the BMSC column under the large eccentric compression is proposed. This paper provides a reference for the application of BMSC columns in the civil engineering.

  • Piers are the main lateral force-resisting members of high-speed railway (HSR) bridges used in China and are characterized by low axial load ratios, low longitudinal reinforcement ratios, low stirrup ratios, and high shear span ratios. It is well known that flexural, flexural-shear, and shear failures of piers may occur during an earthquake. In this study, a new shear strength model was developed to simulate the seismic failure of HSR solid piers accurately. First, low cyclic-loading test data of solid piers obtained in recent years were collected to set up a database for model verification. Second, based on the test database, the applicability of existing shear strength models was evaluated. Finally, a new shear strength model for HSR solid piers with round-ended cross-sections was derived based on the truss model and ultimate equilibrium theory. In comparison with existing models, it was demonstrated that the proposed model could be used to predict the shear strength of HSR piers more accurately.

  • As the main lateral load resisting system in high-rise reinforced concrete structures, the mechanical performance of shear wall has a significant impact on the structure, especially for high-rise buildings. Steel corrosion has been recognized as an important factor affecting the mechanical performance and durability of the reinforced concrete structures. To investigate the effect on the seismic behaviour of corroded reinforced concrete shear wall induced by corrosion, analytical investigations and simulations were done to observe the effect of corrosion on the ultimate seismic capacity and drift capacity of shear walls. To ensure the accuracy of the simulation software, several validations were made using both non-corroded and corroded reinforced concrete shear walls based on some test results in previous literature. Thereafter, a parametric study, including 200 FE models, was done to study the influence of some critical parameters on corroded structural shear walls with boundary element. These parameters include corrosion levels, axial force ratio, aspect ratio, and concrete compressive strength. The results obtained would then be used to propose equations to predict the seismic resistance and drift capacity of shear walls with various corrosion levels.

  • This paper proposes an innovative thin-walled square concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) column with an octagonal/circular lining steel tube, in which the outer steel tube and the inner liner are fabricated independently of each other and connected by slot-weld or self-tapping screw connections. Twelve thin-walled square CFST columns were tested under quasi-static loading, considering the parameters of liner type, connection type between the square tube and liner, yield strength of steel tube, and the axial load ratio. The seismic performance of the thin-walled square CFST columns is effectively improved by the octagonal and circular liners, and all the liner-stiffened specimens showed an excellent ductile behavior with the ultimate draft ratios being much larger than 1/50 and the ductility coefficients being generally higher than 4.0. The energy dissipation abilities of the specimens with circular liners and self-tapping screw connections were superior to those with octagonal liner and slot-weld connections. Based on the test results, both the finite element (FE) and simplified theoretical models were established, considering the post-buckling strength of the thin-walled square steel tube and the confinement effect of the liners, and the proposed models well predicted the hysteretic behavior of the liner-stiffened specimens.

  • The failure of reinforced concrete structures in recent earthquakes caused concern about the performance of beam column joints. Confinement of joint is one of the ways to improve the performance of beam column joints during earthquakes. This paper describes an experimental study of exterior beam-column joints with two non-conventional reinforcement arrangements. One exterior beam-column joint of a six story building in seismic zone III of India was designed for earthquake loading. The transverse reinforcement of the joint assemblages were detailed as per IS 13920:1993 and IS 456:2000 respectively. The proposed nonconventional reinforcement was provided in the form of diagonal reinforcement on the faces of the joint, as a replacement of stirrups in the joint region for joints detailed as per IS 13920 and as additional reinforcement for joints detailed as per IS 456. These newly proposed detailing have the basic advantage of reducing the reinforcement congestion at the joint region. In order to study and compare the performance of joint with different detailing, four types of one-third scale specimens were cast (two numbers in each type). The main objective of the present study is to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed reinforcement detailing. All the specimens were tested under reverse cyclic loading, with appropriate axial load. From the test results, it was found that the beam-column joint having confining reinforcement as per IS: 456 with nonconventional detailing performed well. Test results indicate that the non-conventionally detailed specimens, Type 2 and Type 4 have an improvement in average ductility of 16% and 119% than their conventionally detailed counter parts (Type1 and Type 3). Further, the joint shear capacity of the Type 2 and Type 4 specimens are improved by 8.4% and 15.6% than the corresponding specimens of Type 1 and Type 3 respectively. The present study proposes a closed form expression to compute the yield and ultimate load of the system. This is accomplished using the theory of statics and the failure pattern observed during testing. Good correlation is found between the theoretical and experimental results.
