The damage scale and damage area in the coast have been increased dramatically because of calamities such as typhoon. tidal wave. flood and storm. Especially. 409 cases. which reach to about $40.9\%$ of natural disasters of 1,000 cases for the recent 15 years have happened on coast area. More than $40\%$ of natural disasters also occurred every year is happening in coastland. Therefore, there is a great need to construct all related GIS database such as atmospheric phenomena (typhoon. tidal wave, flood and storm). harbor facility, harbor traffic and ebb and flow. Furthermore. the certain system should be developed and integrated with NDMS (National Disaster Management System) by using 3D web GIS technology. In this study. the coast disaster area management system was designed and developed by using 3D web GIS technique so that the coast disaster area could be monitored and managed in real time and in visual. Finally. the future disaster in coast area could be predicted scientifically.

Recently huge typhoons had attacked to the coastal waters in Korea and caused disastrous casualties in those area. There are some discussions on correction to the design parameters for the coastal structures. Wave transformation computations with the extreme waves are of value in planning and constructing engineering works, especially in coastal regions. Prediction of typhoon surge elevations is based primarily on the use of a numerical model in this study, since it is difficult to study these events in real time or with use of physical models. Wave prediction with a two dimensional numerical model for a site with complicated coastal lines and structures at the period of typhoon 'Maemi' is discussed. In order to input parameters for the extreme wave conditions, we analyzed the observed and predicted typhoon data. Finally we applied the model discussed above to the storm surge and extreme wave problem at Busan Harbor, the southeast coast of Korea. Effects of water level variation and transformation of the extreme waves in relation with the flooding in coastal waters interested are analyzed. We then mack an attempt to presen a basic hazard map for the corresponding site.

In recent years, strong typhoons have passed South Korea almost every year and severe damages were incurred directly and indirectly. However, instances where wave and wind data were procured from the offshore approach path of the typhoon are very rare and thus researchers are experiencing difficulties in obtaining calibration and verification data of typhoon-generated wave modeling. This paper provides a synthesis of records of observations by the Korea Meteorological Administration and Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology on storm waves generated by the typhoons SONGDA, NABI, and SHANSHAN that passed from 2004 to 2006 in order to help researchers interested in typhoon-generated wave numerical modeling. Although the trajectories of typhoon NABI and SHANSHAN were east of the Korea Strait, a significant wave height of 8.3 m was measured at Namhyeongjedo located east of Geojedo. Moreover, an unprecedented significant wave height of 12.2 m was measured for both typhoons at a station 1.4 km away from Yeongil Bay breakwater. Meanwhile, a comparative analysis of data obtained with a ocean data buoy at Geojedo and a Directional Waverider at Namhyeongjedo showed maximum wave heights that were similar but considerably different significant wave heights.

Sea surface wind is an important variable for elucidating the atmospheric-ocean interactions and predicting the dangerous weather conditions caused by oceans. Accurate sea surface wind data are required for making correct predictions; however, there are limited observational datasets for oceans. Therefore, this study aimed to obtain long-period high-resolution sea surface wind data. First, the ERA5 reanalysis wind field, which can be used for a long period at a high resolution, was regridded and synthesized using the asymmetric typhoon wind field calculated via the Generalized Asymmetric Holland Model of the numerical model named ADvanced CIRCulation model. The accuracy of the asymmetric typhoon synthesized wind field was evaluated using data obtained from Korea Meteorological Administration and Japan Meteorological Administration. As a result of the evaluation, it was found that the asymmetric typhoon synthetic wind field reproduce observations relatively well, compared with ERA5 reanalysis wind field and symmetric typhoon synthetic wind field calculated by the Holland model. The sea surface wind data produced in this study are expected to be useful for obtaining storm surge data and conducting frequency analysis of storm surges and sea surface winds in the future.
Natural disaster such as inundation due to the typhoon induced storm-surge has inflicted severe losses on the coastal area. The problem of global warming and sea surface rising has issued and thus influences the increase of frequency and potential power of storm-surge. What we can do is to make intelligent effort to predict and prevent the losses through the early warning and prevention activity from the accurate prediction and forecasting about the time-varying storm-surge height and its arriving time resulted from the numerical simulation with sea observations. In this paper, we developed the web service based GIS-Enabled storm-surge visualization system to predict and prevent the storm-surge disasters. Moreover. for more accurate topography around coastal area and fine-grid storm-surge numerical model, we have accomplished GIS-based coastal mapping through LiDAR measurement.

The surges caused by the typhoon “Maemi” which struck the southern coast of Korea are analysed in Kwangyang Bay on September 12, 2003. The deviations of the high water level were 93∼108 cm and the maximum deviations of the water level (maximum surges) were 176∼196 cm in Kwangyang Bay during the typhoon “Maemi”. The major parameters of the maximum deviations of the water level are as follows: Analysis shows that the pressure drop increased the sea level by 59 cm, the flood of the Sumjin River by 4-5 cm and the external surge propagation and wind setup by 113∼132 cm. During the typhoon “Maemi”, the highest high water recorded in Kwangyang Port (PT3) is 460 cm, which is higher by 5 cm than the highest high water (455 cm) with return period of 100 years estimated in planning the Kwangyang steelworks (POSCO) grounds and higher by 15 cm than the observed highest high water (445 cm) recorded during the typhoon “Thelma” on 1987. Thus, the highest high water caused by the typhoon “Maemi” is higher than the extreme highest high water for the last 20 years in Kwangyang Bay.
23 tropical cyclones of tropical storm(TS) intensity or higher formed in the western North Pacific and the South China Sea in 2006. The total number is less than the 30-year $(1971{\sim}2000)$ average frequency of 26.7, Out of 23, 15 cyclones reached typhoon(TY) intensity, three severe tropical storm(STS) intensity, and five TS intensity. The tropical cyclone season in 2006 began in May with the formation of CHANCHU(0601). While convective activity was slightly inactive around the Philippines from late June to early August. In addition, subtropical high was more enhanced than normal over the south of Japan from May to early August. Consequently, most tropical cyclones formed over the sea east of the Philippines after late June, and many of them moved westwards to China. CHANCHU(0601), BILIS(0604), KAEMI(0605), PRAPIROON(0606) and SAOMI(0608) brought damage to China, the Philippines, and Vietnam. On the other hand, EWINIAR(0603) moved northwards and hit the Republic of Korea, causing damage to the country From late August to early September, convective activity was temporarily inactive over the sea east of the Philippines. However, it turned active again after late September. Subtropical high was weak over the south of Japan after late August. Therefore, most tropical cyclones formed over the sea east of the Philippines and moved northwards. WUKONG(0610) and SHANSHAN(0613) hit Japan to bring damage to the country. On the other hand, XANGSANE(0615) and CIMARON(0619) moved westwards in the South China Sea, causing damage to the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. In addition, IOKE(0612) was the first namded cyclone formed in the central North Pacific and moved westwards across longitude 180 degrees east after HUKO(0224).
Seasonal changes of topograpy, sediment grain size and accumulation rate on the Gomso-Bay tidal flat(Fig. 1), west coast of Korea, have studied in order to understand the seasonal accumulation pattern and preservation potential of tidal-flat sediments. Seasonal levelings across the tidal flat show that the landward movement of both intertidal sand shoals and cheiers accelerates during the winter and typhoon period, but it almost stops in summer when mud deposition is instead predominant on the middle to upper tidal flat. Seasonal variations of mean grain size were largest on the upper part of middle tidal flat where summer mud layers were eroded during the winter and typhoon periods(Fig. 2). Measurements of accululation depths from sea floor to basal plate reveal that accumulation rates were seasonally controlled according to the elevation of tidal-flat surface(Table 1) : the upper flat, where the accumulation rate of summer was generally higher than that of winter, was characterized by a continuous deposition throughout the entire year, whereas on the middle flat, sediment accumulations were concentrated in winter realtive to summer, and were intermittently eroded by typhoons. The lower tidal flat were deposited mostly in winter and eroded during summer typhoons. Cancores taken across the tidal flat reveal that sand-mud interlaers resulting from such seasonal changes of energy regime are preserved only in the upper part of the deposits and generally replaced by storm layers downcore(Fig. 3). Based on above results, it is suggested that the storm deposits formed by winter stors and typhoons would consist of the major part of the Gomso-Bay deposits(Fig. 4).

The objective of this study is to analyze the temporal pattern characteristic of short-duration rainfall defined as a rainfall durations of 6 hours or less by the Huff's 4th quartile distribution. To analyze the temporal pattern characteristic of short-duration rainfall, the rainfall data are classified by rainfall duration and rainfall type(Changma, Typhoon, Severe rain storm, Frontal storm) and change of rainfall segment. Also, the results of this study compared with result of research work of Korea Institute of Construction Technology(1989) and Ministry of Construction & Transportation(2000). The conclusions of this study are as follows; (1) Short-duration rainfall with duration of 6 hours or less is found to be most prevalent frist-quartile storms. (2) In the case of rainfall type, Changma and Severe rain storms and Frontal storm is found second-quartile storms, and Typhoon is found third-quartile storms. (3) In the result by change of sixth segment storms, the type of temporal pattern of rainfall is found to be most prevalent two sixth parts, (4) Comparative analysis of the results shows that shapes of the dimensionless cumulative curves and values are different from those of existing researches.
Understanding the severity of the typhoon-induced storm-surge helps in planning reaction and in preventing further disaster. Natural disasters due to the storm-surge are predictable from accurate observations and forecasts from numerical simulations. What we can do is to make intelligent effort to minimize the loss due to the disaster to the most extent with the technology of early warning, forecast and prevention activity. In this paper, we propose the design of GIS-based Web Service System to visualize the time-varying storm-surge's height and wind field data effectively with 3 different kinds of resolution for predict and prevent storm-surge disasters. This system is one of the efforts to provide the storm-surge forecast service to general public and share two-way more helpful information to coastal resident through the Internet.
