In this paper a novel passive snubber is proposed, which can suppress the voltage spike across the bridge leg of the isolated full-bridge boost topology. The snubber is composed of capacitors, inductors and diodes. Two capacitors connected in series are used to absorb the voltage spike and the energy of each capacitor can be transferred to the load during one switching cycle by the resonance of the inductors and capacitors. The operational principle of the passive snubber is analyzed in detail based on a three-phase power factor correction (PFC) converter, and the design considerations of both the converter and the snubber are given. Finally, a 3kW laboratory-made prototype is built. The experimental results verify the theoretical analysis and evaluations. They also prove the validity and feasibility of the proposed methods.
This paper presents a number of approximated analytical formulations for the flutter analysis of long-span bridges using the so-called uncoupled flutter derivatives. The formulae have been developed from the simplified framework of a bimodal coupled flutter problem. As a result, the proposed method represents an extension of Selberg's empirical formula to generic bridge sections, which may be prone to one of the aeroelastic instability such as coupled-mode or single-mode (either dominated by torsion or heaving mode) flutter. Two approximated expressions for the flutter derivatives are required so that only the experimental flutter derivatives of ($H_1^*$, $A_2^*$) are measured to calculate the onset flutter. Based on asymptotic expansions of the flutter derivatives, a further simplified formula was derived to predict the critical wind speed of the cross section, which is prone to the coupled-mode flutter at large reduced wind speeds. The numerical results produced by the proposed formulas have been compared with results obtained by complex eigenvalue analysis and available approximated methods show that they seem to give satisfactory results for a wide range of study cases. Thus, these formulas can be used in the assessment of bridge flutter performance at the preliminary design stage.
The current study investigates the impacts of empathic concern, as a personal trait, and rational/emotional appeal on responses over the campaigns to help the disabled. Empathic concern is an emotional personality known as strongly activating altruistic motivations. The experiment proceeded at two stages that in the first stage, the personal disposition was measured and in the second stage, the condition of appeal type was presented. Thus, the whole experimental design was empathic concern(2) ${\times}$ appeal type(2) on attitudes and behavioral intention. Individuals high in empathic concern showed higher ratings, compared to people low, on attitudes and behavioral intention in the condition of rational appeal. The difference between high and low empathic concern in the condition of emotional appeal was small.
The aim of this study was to analyze the aerodynamic properties of the composite cable-stayed bridge by conducting three-dimensional wind tunnel tests. Focusing on the improved section of the bridge in the two-dimensional wind tunnel tests, the bridge's aerodynamic stability was estimated based on the angles of attack and the wind angles. The aerodynamic properties of vertical galloping, torsion galloping, and torsion flutter were also estimated based on the design wind velocity, and because much of the cable-stayed bridge was constructed using FCM, it was not sufficiently stiff during the bridge's construction. Therefore, the experience progressed by stages: from the full stage to the tow stage, and until the bridge became a single tower. Since the original plane was designed to be a steel box girder, the aerodynamic properties of the steel-box-type and composite-type girder could be compared. The results of this study can be utilized as basic data regarding the aerodynamic properties of medium-length and short composite cable-stayed bridges.

The selection of the temperature sensor in a cryogenic system depends on the temperature range, shape, and accuracy. An accurate temperature sensor is essential for improving the reliability of an experiment. We have developed a calibration system for cryogenic temperature sensors using a two-stage cryocooler. To reduce the heat load, a thermal shield is installed at the first stage with multiple layer insulation (MLI). We have also developed a sensor holder for calibrating more than 20 sensors simultaneously in order to save time and reduce costs. This system can calibrate sensors at variable temperatures via temperature control using a heater. In this paper, we present the design and fabrication of the temperature sensor calibration system and a representative experimental result.
Some optimal designs and data analysis methods based on a Gaussian spatial linear model for computer simulation experiments are considered. For designs of computer experiments, Latin-hypercube designs and some optimal designs are combined. A two-stage computational (2-points exchange and Newton-type) algorithm for finding the optimal Latin-hypercube design is presented. The spatial prediction model which was discussed by Sacks, Welch, Mitchell and Wynn(1989) for computer experiments, is used for analysis of the simulated data. Moreover, a method of contructing sequential (optimal) Latin-hypercube designs is considered. An application of this approach to the quality improvement and optimization of the integrated circuit design via the main-effects plot and the sequential experimental strategy is presented.

The paper presents a numerical approach to study of fluid flow characteristics and to predict performance of wind turbines. The numerical model is based on Finite-volume method (FVM) discretization of unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations. The movement of turbine blades is modeled using moving mesh technique. The turbulence is modeled using commonly used turbulence models: Renormalization Group (RNG) k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ and k-${\omega}$ turbulence models. The model is validated with the experimental data over a large range of tip-speed to wind ratio (TSR) and blade pitch angles. In order to demonstrate the use of numerical method as a tool for designing wind turbines, two dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) simulations are carried out to study the flow through a small scale Darrieus type H-rotor Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT). The flows predictions are used to determine the performance of the turbine. The turbine consists of 3-symmetrical NACA0022 blades. A number of simulations are performed for a range of approaching angles and wind speeds. This numerical study highlights the concerns with the self-starting capabilities of the present VAWT turbine. However results also indicate that self-starting capabilities of the turbine can be increased when the mounted angle of attack of the blades is increased. The 2-D simulations using the presented model can successfully be used at preliminary stage of turbine design to compare performance of the turbine for different design and operating parameters, whereas 3-D studies are preferred for the final design.

In this study, a 3D CFD analysis method for the combustion process was established for a low calorific value syngas-diesel dual-fuel engine operating under very lean fuel-air mixture condition. Also, the accuracy of computational analysis was evaluated by comparing the experimental results with the computed ones. To simulate the combustion for the dual-fuel engine, a new dual-fuel chemical kinetics set was used that was constituted by merging two verified chemical kinetic sets: n-heptane (173 species) for diesel and Gri-mech 3.0 (53 species) for syngas. For dual-fuel mode operations, the early stage of combustion was dominated by the fuel burning inside or near the spray plume. After which, the flame propagated into the syngas in the piston bowl and then proceeded toward the syngas in the squish zone. With the baseline injection system and piston shape, a significant amount of unburned syngas was discharged. To solve this problem, effects of the injection parameters and piston shape on combustion characteristics were analyzed by calculation. The change in injection variables toward increasing the spray plume volume or the penetration length were effective to cause fast burning in the vicinity of TDC by widening the spatial distribution of diesel acting as a seed of auto-ignition. As a result, the unburned syngas fraction was reduced. Changing the piston shape with the shallow depth of the piston bowl and 20% squish area ratio had a significant effect on the combustion pattern and lessened the unburned syngas fraction by half.
The Half-depth precast deck is a structural system that utilizes pre-cast panels pre-built at the factory as formwork at the construction stage and as a major structural member at the same time after completion. These systems have joints between segments, and the detail and performance of the joints are factors that have a very large impact on the quality, such as the constructability and durability of the bridge decks. In this study, strength performance evaluation was performed for improved joints using connecting rebar by experimental method. Static loading tests were conducted on the test specimen with improved joint, those with existing joint and those without joint. The test results of the specimens were compared to each other, and the flexural strength required by the design was compared. The flexural strength required in the design was presented by finite element analysis. It has been shown that the flexural strength of the specimens with joints were more than twice that required by the design. But the flexural strength of the specimen with existing joint was about 84% of that without joint. The flexural strength of the specimen with improved joints was a nearly similar degree of that compared to the specimen without joint. And a comparison of the moment-deflection relationship curves of the two specimens also shows a very similar flexural behavior. It is confirmed that improved joint has sufficient flexural strength. In addition to strength, the bridge decks require serviceability, such as deflection and cracking, and in particular, fatigue resistance due to repetitive live loads is an important performance factor. Therefore, further verification studies are required.

Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is an important factor in increasing production efficiency in industrial sectors, along with data collection, exchange and analysis through large-scale connectivity. However, as traffic increases explosively due to the recent spread of IIoT, an allocation method that can efficiently process traffic is required. In this thesis, I propose a two-stage task offloading decision method to increase successful task throughput in an IIoT environment. In addition, I consider a hybrid offloading system that can offload compute-intensive tasks to a mobile edge computing server via a cellular link or to a nearby IIoT device via a Device to Device (D2D) link. The first stage is to design an incentive mechanism to prevent devices participating in task offloading from acting selfishly and giving difficulties in improving task throughput. Among the mechanism design, McAfee's mechanism is used to control the selfish behavior of the devices that process the task and to increase the overall system throughput. After that, in stage 2, I propose a multi-armed bandit (MAB)-based task offloading decision method in a non-stationary environment by considering the irregular movement of the IIoT device. Experimental results show that the proposed method can obtain better performance in terms of overall system throughput, communication failure rate and regret compared to other existing methods.
