  • The effect of grain refinement on the plastic deformation behaviour of nanocrystalline metallic materials is investigated. A phase mixture model in which a single phase material is considered as an effectively two-phase one is discussed. A distinctive feature of the model is that grain boundaries are treated as a separate phase deforming by a diffusion mechanism. For the grain interior phase two concurrent mechanisms are considered: dislocation glide and mass transfer by diffusion. The proposed constitutive model was implemented into a finite element code (DEFORM) using a semicoupled approach. The finite element method was applied to simulating room temperature tensile deformation of Cu down to the nanoscale grain size in order to investigate the pre- and post-necking behaviour.

  • Our goal is to present a simple volume-of-fluid type interface-tracking algorithm to compressible two-phase flow in two space dimensions. The algorithm uses a uniform underlying Cartesian grid with some cells cut by the tracked interfaces into two subcells. A volume-moving procedure that consists of two basic steps: (1) the update of volume fractions in each grid cell at the end of the time step, and (2) the reconstruction of interfaces from discrete set of volume fractions, is employed to follow the dynamical behavior of the interface motion. As in the previous work with a surface-tracking procedure for general front tracking (LeVeque & Shyue 1995, 1996), a high resolution finite volume method is then applied on the resulting slightly nonuniform grid to update all the cell values, while the stability of the method is maintained by using a large time step wave propagation approach even in the presence of small cells and the use of a time step with respect to the uniform grid cells. A sample preliminary numerical result for an underwater explosion problem is shown to demonstrate the feasibility of the algorithm for practical problems.

  • Two-dimensional solidification analysis during rheology forming process of semi-solid aluminum ahoy has been studied Two-phase fluid flow model to investigate the velocity field and temperature distribution is proposed. The unposed mathematical model is applied to the die shape of the two type. To calculate the velocities and temperature fields during rheology forming process, the each governing equation correspondent to the liquid and solid region are adapted. Theoretical model on the basis of the two-phase flow model is the mixture rule of solid and liquid phases. This approach is based on the liquid and solid viscosity.

  • We propose a novel approach to measure the residual phase noise (RPN) of a photodiode (PD) based on a two-tone correlation method. Compared with the previous measurements of the RPNs of PDs, this method is more convenient in practical application. In this method, two microwave sources and other components were placed in two isolated links sharing the same PD, so the noises of them were uncorrelated. With an FFT analyzer, the uncorrelated noises could be mostly suppressed while only the RPN of the PD was preserved. Voltage-dependent nonlinearities of PDs were studied previously. In this letter, we investigate the relationship between the RPN of the PD and the bias voltage on the PD. By changing the bias voltage, the difference of the RPN can be up to 10 dB.

  • A mathematical model and its solution algorithm are proposed for computing the capacity of terminal control area. The model is built based on dynamics of aircraft flying on pre-established approach path and its solution algorithm employs a numerical method. The model computes the minimum separation of two aircraft at the entry fix of the terminal control area, which assures that air traffic separation rules are not violated during the approach phase, thereby computes the capacity. The model might be applied for designing approach paths for a new airport, for rearranging paths of an existing airport or establishing approach control procedures.

  • Characteristics of two-phase flow and heat transfer were numerically investigated in a submerged gas injection system when temperature of the injected gas was different from that of the liquid. The Eulerian approach was used for both the continuous and dispersed phases. The turbulence in the liquid phase was modeled using the standard $k-\varepsilon$$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. The interphase friction and heat transfer coefficient were calculated from the correlations available in the literature. The turbulent dispersion of the phases was modeled by a "dispersion Prandtl number". In the case with heat transfer where the temperature of the injected gas is higher than the mean liquid temperature, the axial and the radial velocities are lower in comparison with the case of homogeneous temperatures. The results in the present research are of interest in the design and operation of a wide variety of material and chemical processes.

  • Supplier selection is an essential task within the purchasing function of supply chain management because it provides companies with opportunities to reduce various costs and realize stable and reliable production. However, many companies find it difficult to determine which suppliers should be targeted as each of them has varying strengths and weaknesses in performance which require careful screening by the purchaser. Moreover, information required to assess suppliers is not known precisely and typically fuzzy in nature. In this paper, therefore, fuzzy multi-objective linear programming (fuzzy MOLP) is presented under fuzzy goals: cost minimization, service level maximization and purchasing risk. To solve the problem, we introduce an enhanced two-phase approach of fuzzy linear programming for the supplier selection. In formulated problem, Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) is used to determine the weights of criteria, and Taguchi Loss Function is employed to quantify purchasing risk. Finally, we provide a set of alternative solution which enables decision maker (DM) to select the best compromise solution based on his/her preference. Numerical experiment is provided to demonstrate our approach.

  • A numerical study on swirling pulverized coal combustion in an axisymmetric enclosure is carried out by applying the 2-phase weighted sum of gray gases model (WSGGM) approach with the discrete ordinate method (DOM) to model the radiative heat transfer equation. In the radiative transfer equation, the same polynomial equation and coefficients for weighting factors as those for gas are adopted for the coal/char particles as a function of partial pressure and particle temperature. The Eulerian balance equations for mass, momentum, energy, and species mass fractions are adopted with the standard and RNG k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model, whereas the Lagrangian approach is used for the particulate phase. The eddy-dissipation model is employed for the reaction rate for gaseous mixture, and the single-step and two-step first-order reaction model for the devolatilization process for coal. Special attention is given to establish the thermal boundary conditions on radiative transfer equation By comparing the numerical results with experimental ones, the radiation model used here is confirmed and found to provide an alternative for simulating the radiative transfer.

  • Generally, the network topology design problem, which is difficult to solve with the classical method because it has exponentially increasing complexity with the augmented network size, is characterized as a kind of NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem. The problem of this research is to design the highly reliable network topology considering the connection cost and all-terminal network reliability, which can be defined as the probability that every pair of nodes can communicate with each other. In order to solve the highly reliable network topology design problem minimizing the construction cost subject to network reliability, we proposes an efficient two phase approach to design reliable network topology, i.e., the first phase employs, a genetic algorithm (GA) which uses $Pr\ddot{u}fer$ number for encoding method and backtracking Algorithm for network reliability calculation, to find the spanning tree; the second phase is a greedy method which searches the optimal network topology based on the spanning ree obtained in the first phase, with considering 2-connectivity. finally, we show some experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our two phase approach.

  • This paper presents a phase-based stereo matching algorithm in order to efficiently extract 3-dimensional objects from two 2D images. Conventional phase-based methods, especially using windowed Fourier phases, inherit good properties in the case of hierarchical approaches, because they basically use a multi-resolution phase map. On the contrary, their computational costs are very heavy. Therefore, a fast hierarchical approach, using multi-resolution phase-based strategy and reducing the redundancy of phase calculations, is proposed in this pare. In addition, a structural matching algorithm on the phase domain is adopted to improve the matching quality. In experimental results, it is shown that the computation loads are considerably reduced about 8 times and stable outputs are obtained.
