Cold expansion of fastener holes is a mechanical process widely used in the aerospace industry. This treatment leads to an improvement of fatigue behavior due to the developed compressive residual stresses on the hole surface. The residual stress profile depends on the parameters of cold expansion, which are, expanding rate, inserting direction of mandrel, material properties etc. and the method to confirm this profile is only measurement by X-ray diffractometer. Despite its importance to aerospace industries, little attention has been devoted to the accurate modelling of the process. In this paper, Two-dimensional axisymmetric finite element simulations have been conducted for the cold expansion in an aluminium plate in order to predict the magnitude and distribution of the residual stress and plastic deformation. Maximum compressive residual stress could be increase about 7 percent using the 2-step cold expansion method.
The magnetic field distribution in saturable iron part of electromagnetic energy conversion divices is defined by the nonlinear quasi-Poisson enquation that is described the electromagnetic field characteristics and satisfied the natural boundary condition. The solution of this equation is obtained by minimizing an energy functional by means of trial function that defined in triangular subregion of two-dimensional field region. As a result, the accuracy of the machine design is increased by use of its solution. In this respect, this study is developed the basic theory to analyze the magnetic flux distribution in saturable iron part and air gap of induction motor that its secondary part is short circuit by the variational principle, the minimized theory of energy functional, the application of F.E.M., and treatment of computer. As theoritical data compared with the practics, the validity of the theory in this study is supported by experimental findings.
Wood cell-wall modification with acetic anhydride, lumen filled with styren monomer and methyl methacrylate, and a combination of these two treatments were studied for their effectiveness for dimensional stability. Compared to those of untreated Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc and sole acetylated red pine, The combination of acetylation and impregnation with methy methacrylate greatly reduced water absorption, increased ASE to the best and gave better bending strength and compression strength.
After making the surgical treatment plan, the surgical movements are duplicated in the model surgery. During this procedure, reference points and lines are drawn on the base of the models over the dental arch, and sawcuts are made according to these marked osteotomy lines. This method requires more accuracy for better postsurgical results in that the surgical splint which enables the surgeon to position the jaws intraoperatively is made from the casts as repositioned by the model surgery, and finally it will define the postsurgical results. This technique, however, has been found to be inexact, especially when the jaws are moved in several dimensions simultaneously. To overcome this, different methods have been developed for an accurate repositioning of the jaws as planned. A new appliance, Surgical Jaw Relator, was devised by the author for the simple 3-dimensional relocation of the upper and lower models, resulting in the easy construction of the splints such as centric relation splint, intermediate and final splint. This article describes an introduction and a clinical application of this appliance.
A non-thermal micron size plasma needle is applicable for medical treatment because it includes radicals, charged particles, ultraviolet emission, and strong electric fields. The electric fields around the plasma needle device driven by a radio frequency wave are investigated in order to calculate the power delivered to the cell. A commercial multi-physics code, CFD-ACE, was utilized for the calculation of electric fields for the optimization of the needle structure. The electric field and energy absorption profiles are presented with the variation of the device structure and the distance between the needle and tissues. The living tissues effectively absorb the radio frequency power from the plasma needle device with the covered pyrex structure.
A three dimensional inviscid parallel flow solver has been developed for the simulation of rotor blades in forward flight. The computational domain is divided into stationary and rotating zones for the more efficient mesh adaptation. The conservative mesh treatment algorithm is used for the convection of flow variables and fluxes across the sliding boundary. A deforming mesh algorithm using modified spring analogy is used for the blade motion. In the present paper, detail descriptions of numerical analysis for forward flight are introduced. Some results are presented for a two bladed AH-1G rotor and compared with experimental data.
This report presents experimental results on the heat transfer coefficients in the boiling region of spray cooling for actual metallurgical process. In this study, the heat flux distribution of a two dimensional dilute spray impinging on hot plate was experimentally investigated. Based on the experimental results, they classified the heat transfer area into the stagnation region and wall-flow region. In the stagnation region, the local heat transfer coefficient relates mainly to the droplet-flow-rate supplied from spray nozzle directly, so the local heat transfer coefficients is good agreement with the predicted values from correlation for spray cooling proposed by former report However, the local heat transfer coefficient in wall-flow region is larger than predicted values, and it is found that the rebounding droplets-flow-rate must be accurately evaluated to predict the local heat transfer coefficient in this region.
Graphene is a two-dimensional carbon material whose structure is one-atom-thick planar sheet of sp2-bonded carbon atoms densely packed in a honeycomb crystal lattice. It has drawn significant attention with its distinguished structural and electrical properties. Extremely high mobility and a tunable band gap make graphene potentially useful for innovative approaches to electronics. Although mechanical exfoliation of graphite and decomposition of SiC surfaces upon thermal treatment have been the main method for graphene, they have some limitations in quality and scalability of as-produced graphene films. Solutionphase and solvothermal syntheses of graphene achieved a major improvement for processing, however for device fabrication, a reproducible method such as chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth yielding high quality films of controlled thickness is required. In this research, we synthesized hexagonal graphene flakes on Cu foils by CVD method and controlled its coverage, density and the size of graphene domains by changing reaction parameters. It is important to control these parameters of graphene growth during synthesis in order to achieve tunable properties and optimized device performance.
Ultrathin networks of itaconic acid copolymers and poly(allylamine) were produced by a Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique employing a double-chain amine as a monolayer template which was subsequently removed by extraction after thermal crosslinking. Itaconic acid copolymers used were copoly (itaconic acid-ethyl vinyl ether) and copoly (itaconic acid-n-butyl vinyl ether). The polyion-complexed monolayers of three components consisting of template amine, itaconic acid copolymer and poly (allylamine) were formed at the air-water interface. The Langmuir film properties have been studied by the surface pressure-area isotherm and fluorescence microscopy. The monolayers were transferred on solid substrates and were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Two-dimensional polymer networks were formed through imide or amide linkages by heat treatment under vacuum. The heat-treated films were extracted with chloroform after immersion in aq. sodium chloride to remove the template amines. SEM observation of a LB film on a porous fluorocarbon membrane filter with pore diameter of 0.1 μm showed covering of the pores by six layers in the polyion complex state.
Geotextile tube technology has been perceived as an economical solution for liquid sludge treatment, and analyzing its consolidation behavior is necessary to be able to evaluate the dewatering capabilities of large geotextile tubes filled with contaminated soil, tailings, sewage sludge, and so on. The objectives of this study are to present a method that can adequately convey the consolidation behavior of geotextile tubes filled with sewage sludge, and to investigate the effects of various geotextile tube consolidation parameters. In this study, variable coefficients of consolidation are utilized to analyze the consolidation process of geotextile tubes filled with sewage sludge. The consolidation solution was verified by comparing the measured and predicted data from a hanging bag test conducted in the literature. After verifying the proposed solution, the consolidation parameters of a geotextile tube composed of a woven polypropylene outer layer and a non-woven polypropylene layer filled sewage sludge were obtained. Using the obtained parameters, the consolidation behavior of a large-scale composite geotextiles tube was predicted.
