In this paper, we present a method to automatically quantify the three-dimensional (3D) volume of red blood cells (RBCs) using off-axis digital holographic microscopy. The RBCs digital holograms are recorded via a CCD camera using an off-axis interferometry setup. The RBCs' phase image is reconstructed from the recorded off-axis digital hologram by a computational reconstruction algorithm. The watershed segmentation algorithm is applied to the reconstructed phase image to remove background parts and obtain clear targets in the phase image with many single RBCs. After segmenting the reconstructed RBCs' phase image, all single RBCs are extracted, and the 3D volume of each single RBC is then measured with the surface area and the phase values of the corresponding RBC. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method to automatically calculate the 3D volume of RBC, two typical shapes of RBCs, i.e., stomatocyte/discocyte, are tested via experiments. Statistical distributions of 3D volume for each class of RBC are generated by using our algorithm. Statistical hypothesis testing is conducted to investigate the difference between the statistical distributions for the two typical shapes of RBCs. Our experimental results illustrate that our study opens the possibility of automated quantitative analysis of 3D volume in various types of RBCs.
The ability of a robotic manipulator to recognize the shape of an object by feeling its band around the object is useful in many applications. Two-dimensional object contour tracking by force feedback is described. The system consists of IBM PC/AT, PUMA 560 manipulator, PUMA controller and a tip sensor. Position control is accomplished by using VAL command and the unmodified PUMA controller. A contour tracking algorithm is developed and tested on three different types of objects. The experimental results show that the objects' shapes can be successfully identified.
A form-finding technique is proposed for three-dimensional spatial structures. Two-step discrete finite element (FE) mesh generator based on computer aided geometric design (CAGD) is introduced and used to control the shape of three-dimensional spatial structures. Mathematical programming technique is adopted to search new forms (or shapes) of spatial structures. For this purpose, the strain energy is introduced as the objective function to be minimized and the initial volume (or the initial weight) is considered as constraint function. Numerical examples are carried out to test the capability of the proposed form-finding techniques and provided as benchmark tests.
In modal analysis, the mode shape reflects the vibration characteristics of the structure, and thus it is widely performed for finite element model updating and structural health monitoring. Generally, the acceleration-based mode shape is suitable to express the characteristics of structures for the translational vibration; however, it is difficult to represent the rotational mode at boundary conditions. A tilt sensor and gyroscope capable of measuring rotational mode are used to analyze the overall behavior of the structure, but extracting its mode shape is the major challenge under the small vibration always. Herein, we conducted a feasibility study on a multi-mode shape estimating approach utilizing a single physical quantity signal. The basic concept of the proposed method is to receive multi-metric dynamic responses from two sensors and obtain mode shapes through bridge loading test with relatively large deformation. In addition, the linear transformation matrix for estimating two mode shapes is derived, and the mode shape based on the gyro sensor data is obtained by acceleration response using ambient vibration. Because the structure's behavior with respect to translational and rotational mode can be confirmed, the proposed method can obtain the total response of the structure considering boundary conditions. To verify the feasibility of the proposed method, we pre-measured dynamic data acquired from five accelerometers and five gyro sensors in a lab-scale test considering bridge structures, and obtained a linear transformation matrix for estimating the multi-mode shapes. In addition, the mode shapes for two physical quantities could be extracted by using only the acceleration data. Finally, the mode shapes estimated by the proposed method were compared with the mode shapes obtained from the two sensors. This study confirmed the applicability of the multi-mode shape estimation approach for accurate damage assessment using multi-dimensional mode shapes of bridge structures, and can be used to evaluate the behavior of structures under ambient vibration.

One-dimensional (1D) nanowires have been received much attention due to their potential for applications in various field. Recently some logic applications fabricated on various nanowires, such as ZnO, CdS, Si, are reported. These logic circuits, which consist of two- or three field effect transistors(FETs), are basic components of computation machine such as central process unit (CPU). FETs fabricated on nanowire generally have surrounded shapes of gate structure, which improve the device performance. Highly integrated circuits can also be achieved by fabricating on nano-scaled nanowires. But the numerical and SPICE simulation about the logic circuitry have never been reported and analyses of detailed parameters related to performance, such as channel doping, gate shapes, souce/drain contact and etc., were strongly needed. In our study, NAND and NOT logic circuits were simulated and characterized using 2- and 3-dimensional numerical simulation (SILVACO ATLAS) and built-in spice module(mixed mode).
This Paper addresses to spray characteristics in w-shaped diesel engine combustion chamber which has impingement parts for 4 sprays injected from an injector. The two-dimensional shapes have been chosen to avoid the difficulties for analysing the spray dynamics in the real chamber. The simple shapes are reproduced with same geometries in vertical or horizontal sections through the impingement lands. The spray developments are visualized with a high speed drum camera and shadowgraphy optical system, and the droplet sizes are measured by Malvern system. The detailed discussions m made for the two different combustion chamber shapes, which are new w-shape using spray wall impaction and general w-shape. The results show that the spray characteristics of the new shape are superior to those of the general w-shape.
In this study, an indirect approach is developed for assessing the state of a bridge on the basis of mode shapes estimated by the responses of passing vehicles. Two types of damages, i.e., immobilization of a support and decrease in beam stiffness at the center, are evaluated with varying degrees of road roughness and measurement noise. The assessment theory's feasibility is verified through numerical simulations of interactive vibration between a two-dimensional beam and passing vehicles modeled simply as sprung mass. It is determined that the damage state can be recognized by the estimated mode shapes when the beam incurs severe damage, such as immobilization of rotational support, and the responses contain no noise. However, the developed theory has low robustness against noise. Therefore, numerous measurements are needed for damage identification when the measurement is contaminated with noise.

Rapid prototyping (RP) technologies have been widely used to reduce the lead-time and development cost of new products. $VLM-_{ST}$ process has been developed to overcome the currently developed RP technologies such as a large building time, a high building cost, an additional post-processing and a large apparatus cost. $VLM-_{ST}$ process requires an additional human interaction due to the manual stacking and bonding. Hence, building time, building cost and the part quality are dependent on the skill of labor. A novel RP process, fully automated $VLM-_{ST}$ process ($VLM-_{ST}$), has been developed to improve building efficiency of the process and the human dependency of the part. The objective of this work is to propose a $VLM-_{ST}$ process and to develop an apparatus for implementation of the process. $VLM-_{ST}$ process and its apparatus have various technical novelties such as two step cutting using a rotating table, an automatic stacking method using two pilot holes and two reference shapes, a concept of automatic unit shape layer (AUSL), and an automatic bonding using the bonding roller and building magazine. In order to examine the efficiency and the applicability of the proposed process, various three-dimensional shapes, such as a piston, a human head shape and a human bust shape, were fabricated on the apparatus.
We developed an upwind numerical formulation based on the eigenvalues of the approximate Jacobian matrix in order to solve the hyperbolic conservation laws governing the two-fluid two-phase flow models. We obtained eight analytic eigenvalues in the two dimensions that can be used for estimate of the wave speeds essential in constructing an upwind numerical method. Two-dimensional underwater cavitation in a flow past structural shapes or by underwater explosion can be solved using this method. We present quantitative prediction of cavitation for the water tunnel wall and airfoils that has both experimental data as well as numerical results by other numerical methods and models.
A two-dimensional floating body with a moon pool under forced heave motion, including a piston mode, is numerically simulated. A dynamic CFD simulation is carried out to thoroughly investigate the flow field around a two-dimensional moon pool over various heaving frequencies. The numerical results are compared with experimental results and a linear potential program by Faltinsen et al. (2007). The effects of vortex shedding and viscosity are investigated by changing the corner shapes of the floating body and solving the Euler equation, respectively. The flow fields, including the velocity, vorticity, and pressure fields, are discussed to understand and determine the mechanisms of wave elevation, damping, and sway force.
