  • A new hybrid permanent magnet biased magnetic levitation actuator (maglev) is developed. This new maglev actuator is composed of two C-core electromagnetic cores separated with two permanent magnets. Compared to the conventional hybrid maglev actuators, the new actuator has unique flux paths such that bias flux paths are separated with control flux paths. The control flux paths have minimum reluctances only developed by air gaps, so the currents to produce control fluxes can be minimized. The gravity load can be compensated with the permanent magnet bias fluxes developed at off-centered air gap positions while external disturbances are controlled with control fluxes by currents. The consumed power to operate this levitation system can be minimized. 1-D magnetic circuit model is developed for this model such that the flux densities and magnetic forces are extensively analyzed. 3-D finite element model is also developed to analyze the performances of the maglev actuator.

  • The axial bearing using two ring type permanent magnets to support the weight of a flywheel is proposed to reduce the bearing loss in a flywheel energy storage , system. Two permanent magnet makes stable force in axial direction but unstable force in lateral direction. The lateral unstable stiffness is identified quantitatively using flux analysis, and then through the rotor dynamic analysis on a rigid flywheel system the unstable effects on the system by the stiffness is investigated.

  • Magnetic spiral-type microrobots, which are driven by a rotating magnetic field, have excellent locomotive abilities, whereas their medical applications are limited in the terms of function, such as the ability to drill in blood vessels. In this study, we propose a new robot with superior applications using a magnetic spiral-type machine. The proposed robot can be applied to stent transportation and installation without a catheter. In particular, the robot can be applied to the cardiovascular system, cerebrovascular disease, and nonvascular stent applications depending on the robot size. The robot consists of two independent spiral-type machines and four magnets in total. We controlled directions of thrust force of the two machines, respectively, for active locomotion with a task. We conducted a preliminary validation of the proposed robot for stent transportation and installation through experimental analyses.

  • This study reports on Co/$Co_2$MnSn two-phase magnets. The Co/$Co_2$MnSn two-phase magnet has Co precipitates in a $Co_2MnSn$ Heusler alloy matrix, in which the two phases are exchange-coupled at the phase boundary. The as-casted Co/$Co_2$MnSn system, which has Co-Mn solid solution precipitates in a $Co_2$MnSn Heusler alloy matrix, showed that the Co solid solution precipitates are crystallographically coherent and there is exchange coupling at the phase boundary. To form pure Co precipitates by removal of Mn solute atoms in Co-Mn solid solution, annealing was carried out 48 hours at $870^{\circ}C$. After annealing, the low $T_c$ and low magnetization phase of the Co-Mn solid solution became a high $T_c$ and high magnetization phase of hexagonal Co.

  • The objective of this paper is to review the magnetic and magneto-transport properties of Co/$Co_2TiSn$ consisting of two metallic magnetic phases that are antiferromagnetically exchange-coupled at the phase boundary. The bulk Co/$Co_2TiSn$ system, which has a $Co_2$TiSn Heusler alloy precipitates in the hexagonal Co matrix, showed an unusual coercivity change with a concurrent change in temperature, and was modeled on the basis of a wall formation caused by exchange coupling at the phase boundary. For measurements of magneto-transport properties, Co/$Co_2TiSn$ thin films that had two-magnet phases were deposited using a magnetron sputtering system with a composite target. The magnetization process in the films is also explained on the basis of the model of wall formation at the phase boundary. Annealed Co/$Co_2TiSn$ films showed a 0.12% GMR effect, indicating the scattering of polarized conduction electrons due to the antiparallel exchange coupling at the phase boundary. The scattering process of conduction electrons at the phase boundary was modeled with relation to the magnetization process.

  • Since Nd-Fe-B magnet was first synthesized in 1983, many new applications have emerged in the past two decades. With regard to motor market, it will expand because of strong energy saving requirements from the automobile and electric application markets. Especially, permanent magnet motors for hybrid and electric vehicles are drawing great attention and the usage of Nd-Fe-B magnets will increase all the more hereafter. There is, however, a serious problem as motors in such eco-friendly cars are said to operate in high temperatures of about $200^{\circ}C$. Nd-Fe-B magnet has a drawback of dramatically decreasing coercive force with the rise of temperature. In order to improve this aspect. the best way is to add dysprosium (Dy) into the magnet. So, Dy has become an essential element for Nd-Fe-B high-performance magnet as it helps to maintain coercive force even at high temperatures. On the other hand, the rare earth resources in the earth crust are eccentrically-located and its majority is produced in China. There is a need to reduce its usage as, especially compared to light rare earth elements as neodymium (Nd) and samarium (Sm), heavy rare earth elements including Dy are unevenly distributed to a dramatic degree, their output low, and their prices are about 10 times that of Nd. The present article includes a summary of the trend in research and development of motors and permanent magnets to solve rare-earth resources problem.

  • Paper factories use a large amount of water and same amount of wastewater is generated. It is important to purity and recycle the wastewater because of water shortages and water pollution. The existing water treatment facilities like precipitation process need large-scale equipment and wide space to purity the wastewater of paper factory. High gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) system has the merits to purity rapidly because of large voids at filter and to occupy small space. In this paper, two types of superconducting magnets were used for HGMS systems. Cryo-cooled Bi-2223 superconducting magnet system with 70 mm room temperature bore and 200 mm of height was prepared. Cryo-cooled Nb-Ti superconducting magnet with 100 mm room temperature bore and 600 mm of height was used for magnetic separator. Magnetic filters were designed by the analysis of magnetic field distribution at superconducting magnets. The various magnetic seeding reactions were investigated to increase the reactivity of coagulation. The effects of magnetic separation of wastewater were investigated as variation of magnetic field strength and flow rate of wastewater.

  • The design of superconducting magnets for a 600 kJ SEMS was discussed. The basic constraint conditions in the design of a 600 kJ SMES magnet were V-I loss(<1 W), inductance of magnet(<24 H), the number of Double Pancake Coils(DPC about 10), the number of turns of DPC(<300), outer diameter of DPC(close to 800 mm) and total length of HTS wire in a DPC(<500 m). As a result of optimum design, we obtained design parameters of the 600 kJ SMES magnet with two operating currents, 360 A and 370 A, which are in the limited conditions without V-I loss. V-I loss of each operating current was calculated with design parameters and V-I characteristic of the HTS wire. As a result of calculations, V-I losses with operating currents of 360 A and 370 A were 0.6 W and 1.86 W, respectively. Even though all design parameters of the SMES magnet in case of operating current of 360 A were in the restricted conditions, V-I loss of SMES magnet showed a tendency to generate at local DPCs, which are located on the top and the bottom of the SMES magnet more than that of the other DPCs.
