  • The application of fast tool servo (FTS) for diamond turning has been investigated extensively. This paper focuses on the fabrication of the sinusoidal microstructure on a roller, which generated by a piezoelectric-assisted FTS. The influence of the machining parameters on the microstructure configuration was investigated. The experiment results point out that the configuration of the machined microstructure depends mainly on the spindle speed, the diameter of roller and the driving frequency of FTS. The calculation method of the microstructure dimension was reported. The turning test results show that the diamond tool can be moved up to 1kHz without any reinjected vibration in the machining and the peak-to-valley amplitude of the machined sinusoidal microstructure is about 12<${\mu}m$

  • In turning, the chip may be produced in the form of continuous chip or discontinuous chip. The continuous chips are dangerous to the operator and difficult to be handled at high speed machining. The signal of AE(Acoustic Emission) is found out to be related to cutting conditions, tool materials, test conditions and tool geometry in turning. In this study, the relationship between AE signal and chip form was experimentally investigated. The experimental results show that the types of chip form are possible to be classified from the AE signal using fuzzy logic.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate cutting characteristics and wear behavior in SCM440 steel with different cutting tools, CBN(Cubic Boron Nitride) and coated CBN. During the test coated CBN tool especially with TiAlN showed better wear resistance behavior than orginal CBN tools. In the interrupted cutting condition, axial groove affected tool surface with impact force during the turning operation. For advantageous turning parameter in the interrupted process it is recommendable that lower speed. Also surface roughness showed better behavior in the coated CBN tool conditions than normal CBN conditions. Mainly this is caused by reduced friction between material and tool surface with coated layer.

  • Machining characteristics of tool steels manufactured by electro slag casting process has been investigated in this study. For the estimation of machinability, turning and drilling tests are carried out. The chip shapes at various velocities are investigated for the comparison of turning workabilities of tool steels because the chip shapes reflect characteristics of cutting resistance. In case of drilling test, feed motor currents measured by a hall sensor are used as a measure for the drilling resistance. The machining characteristics of the tool steels are strongly correlated with tensile properties, such as tensile strength, hardness, and ductility. In case of turning workability, it was found to be favoured by the higher tensile strength, while the opposite is true far the drilling workability. The electro-slag casted materials show better turning workability in the viewpoint of chip shapes and, the quenching-tempered electro-slag casted material has relatively better drilling machinability than that of the annealed one.

  • Heavy flint optical glass(SF57HHT) is new material that has extremely high transmittance. Due to brittleness and high hardness, optical glass is one of the most difficult to materials for ultra-precision turning. According to the hypothesis of ductile machining, all materials, regardless of their hardness and brittleness, will undergo transition from brittle to ductile machining region below critical undefromed chip thickness. In this study, cutting test was carried out to evaluate cutting performance of heavy flint glass using ultra-precision machine with single crystal diamond bite. The machined workpiece surface topography, tool wear and surface roughness were examined using AFM and SEM. The experimental results indicate that the machining mode become the brittle mode to ductile mode, when the maximum undeformed chip thinkness is large than critical value. Tool wear mainly occurs on the flank face and its wear mechanism is dominated by abrasion. This study demonstrates the feasibility of SF57HHT by diamond turning.

  • A tool holder system has been designed and builted to measure cutting forces in diamond turning. This system design includes a 3-component piezo-electric tranducer. Initial experiments with tool holder system included verification of its predicted dynamic characteristics as well as a detailed study of cutting parameters. In this research, tool holder system is modeled by considering the element dividing, material properties, and boundary conditions using MSC/PATRAN. Mode and frequency analysis of structure is simulated by MSC/NASTRAN, for the purpose of developing the effective design. In addition, tool holder system is verified by vibration test using accelerometer. Many cutting experiments have been conducted on 6061-T6 aluminum. Tests have involved investigation of velocity effects, and the effects of depth and feedrate on tool force. Cutting velocity has been determined to have negligible effects between 4 and 21㎧.(6) Forces generally increase with increasing depth of cut. Increasing feedrate does not necessarily lead to higher forces. Results suggest that a sample model may not be sufficient to describe the forces produced in the diamond turning process.

  • This study is intended to provide navigator with specific information necessary to assist the avoidance of collision and the operation of ships to evaluate the maneuverability of dead weight tonnage 8,000 tons Oil/Chemical tanker. The actual maneuvering characteristics of ship can be adequately judged from the results of typical ship trials. Author carried out sea trials based full scale for turning test in ballast condition and full load condition, semi balanced rudder and flap rudder. The turning circle maneuvering were performed on the starboard and port sides with $35^{\circ}$ rudder angle at the normal continuous rating. The results from tests could be compared directly with the standards of maneuverability of IMO and consequently the maneuvering qualities of the ship is full satisfied with its.

  • Predicting ship manoeuvrability is attracting widespread interest in the field of analyzing maritime accident to simulate a highly accurate track of a ship in abnormal accident situations. This study investigated the manoeuvrability of a ship in abnormally heeled condition. Free Running Model Tests (FRMT) with 1/65.83 scaled KCS (KRISO container ship) were conducted in three heeled conditions; $35^{\circ}$ turning circle tests and 20/20 zigzag manoeuvring tests were conducted in $0^{\circ}$, $-10^{\circ}$, and $-20^{\circ}$ conditions. The test results showed that the heeled to port condition significantly affected starboard turning and zigzag characteristics; the tactical diameters in the turning circle tests decreased, and the first overshoot angles in the zigzag tests increased when the ship was in the larger heeled condition. These results indicate that the roll angle of the ship considerably affects yaw rate and speed decrease of the ship. The turning and zigzag indices from trajectory and navigation data in the study were provided for benchmark data sets.

  • The decrease in under keel clearance (UKC) due to the increase of draft that occurs during advancing and turning of very large vessels of different types was analyzed based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The trim change in the Duisburg test case (DTC) container ship was much smaller than that of the KRISO very large crude oil carrier 2 (KVLCC2). The sinkage of both ships increased gradually as the water depth became shallower. The amount of sinkage change in DTC was greater than that in KVLCC2. The maximum heel angle was much larger for DTC than for KVLCC2. Both ships showed outward heel angles up to medium-deep water. However, when the water depth became shallow, an inward heel was generated by the shallow water effect. The inward heel increased rapidly in very shallow water. For DTC, the reduction ratio was very large at very shallow water. DTC appeared to be larger than KVLCC2 in terms of the decreased UKC because of shallow water in advancing and turning. In this study, a new result was derived showing that a ship turning in a steady state due to the influence of shallow water can incline inward, which is the turning direction.

  • In order to investigate the maneuverability of tug-barge, sea trial tests such as speed, acceleration/deceleration, $10^{\circ}$ turning, $20^{\circ}$ turning, $10^{\circ}/10^{\circ}$ zigzag and $20^{\circ}/20^{\circ}$ zigzag were conducted with both tug and tug-barge. From the result of turning test, longer tactical diameter and lower rate of turn of tug-barge than those of tug are obtained. From the result of the zigzag test, bigger overshoot angle of tug-barge than that of tug is obtained. When they turned or changed a course, it showed that the barge turned inner side of the trajectory of tug. For the safe navigation, the helmsman of tug-barge should be aware of these maneuvering characteristics.
