난지형 잔디와 한지형 잔디의 혼식에 관한 생태학적 연구 (Ecological Studies on the Warm-Season Turfgrass and Cool-Season Turfgrass Mixtures)

  • 본 연구는 난지형 잔디와 한지형 잔디의 혼식구의 5년간에 걸친 초종 구성비율의 경년변화를 조사하여 안정성이 높은 초종 품종의 조합을 밝히고 시비법이 난지형 잔디와 한지형 잔디 초종의 구성비율에 미치는 영향을 검토하였다. 한지형 잔디를 혼식하여 5년째인 시점에서 난지형 잔디와 한지형 잔디 혼식구의 초종 구성비율은 센티페드그래스와 버팔로그래스와의 혼식구를 제외하고는 들잔디, 세인트어거스틴그래스, 버뮤다그래스는 대체적으로 반반 정도의 비교적 안정된 혼식비율을 유지하고 있었다. 이들 초종들은 난지형 잔디와 한지형 잔디의 혼식을 위한 이용적성이 높은 것으로 사료된다. 그러나, 센티페드그래스와의 혼식구에서는 센티페드그래스가 버팔로그래스와의 혼식구에서는 한지형 잔디가 우점하여 이들 난지형 잔디는 한지형 잔디와의 혼식에 적합하지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 난지형 잔디와 한지형 잔디 혼식구의 시비는 난지형 잔디가 휴면중인 시기에 실시하면 한지형 잔디가 우점하게 되는 경향을 보여 난지형 잔디의 생육기인 4~8월 사이에 실시하는 것이 바람직한 것으로 나타났다. 이들 난지형 잔디와 한지형 잔디 혼식구는 장기간에 걸쳐 안정적으로 일정한 초종 구성비율이 유지되는 것이 중요하기 때문에 앞으로도 계속적인 조사가 이루어져야 할 것으로 사료된다.

  • 잔디 작물에 익숙하지 않은 토양 분석 실험실에서는 잔디 생육에 필요한 인에 대하여서는 과대평가를 하나, 칼륨에 대한 요구도는 대해서는 과소평가를 하는 경향이 있다. 그 이유는 부분적으로 잔디, 정원식물 및 농작물 사이에는 뿌리 발달의 차이가 있기 때문이다. 일반적으로 잔디는 토양으로부터 인을 흡수하는데 좀 더 효율적이기 때문에 인산질 비료에 대한 요구도가 적은 편이다. 작물 재배시에는 농작물의 생산량이 주목적이지만, 잔디밭 관리의 목적은 생산량이 아니기 때문에 근본적으로 칼륨요구 수준이 다르다. 최대의 엽조직 생산을 위해 요구되는 수준이상의 칼륨은 스트레스에 대한 내성을 증가시킬 수 있기 때문에 칼륨 시비 수준을 높일 경우 잔디밭에 유익하다. 또한 토양분석 실험에 대한 철학에도 차이가 있다. 어떤 연구소는 기본적인 양이온 치환의 용량 접근법(BCSR)을 선호하는 반면, 다른 연구소는 사용 가능한 성분의 충분양(SLAN)에 대한 컨셉을 사용한다. 연구소에 따라 이 두 가지 방법을 모두 사용할 수도 있다. BCSR 이론의 사용은 대부분 비료 살포 남용을 야기한다. 그리고 문제가 될만한 비료의 살포와 제품들은 때때로 양이온의 비율의 불균형을 예증하기 위해 사용된다. 토양 실험에 있어서의 BCSR 비율 이론의 유용성은 토양의 구성에 따라 달라질 수 있고 특히 모래로 조성된 지반에서 수행된 토양분석은 문제가 될 수 있다. 또 다른 토양 실험의 문제는 경기장 또는 골프장 그린에 사용된 모래지반이 유리된 칼슘 탄산염을 함유하고 있을 때 발생한다. pH7.0의 암모늄 초산염 추출액은 양이온 치환량의 측정과 양이온 비율의 측정을 한쪽으로 치우치게 할 수 있는 과다한 양의 칼슘을 용해한다. 용질의 pH를 8.1로 맞추는 것은 석회질 토양에서의 실험 절차의 정확성을 향상시킬 수 있다.

골프장의 난지형 잔디에 발생하는 Large patch의 발병 특성 (Characteristics of large patch occurrence at warm-season turfgrass in golf course)

  • This investigation was conducted to develop an integrated disease management system against large patch disease occurred in a golf course. Large patch, brown patch, and Rhizoctonia blight sometimes are used interchangeably by turfgrass managers and researchers, Large patch disease of zoysiagrass is caused by a soilborne fungus called Rhizoctonia solani. Although this fungus is very similar to the one that causes brown patch disease of cool-season turfgrasses in mid-summer. Large patch development is favored by high thatch and soil moisture. Avoid overwatering the turfgrass, especially in the fall or early spring. Poorly-drained areas are very susceptible to injury from large patch and should be reconstructed (draining tiles, etc) to avoid soil saturation. However, control of yellow patch with fungicides is normally not recommended because the disease has only cosmetic effects and symptoms are usually very short-lived. Therefore, we reviewed the symptom of large patch to look for control method by soil management method.

Aggressiveness of Three Snow Mold Fungi on Creeping Bentgrass Cultivars under Controlled Environment Conditions

  • Snow molds are the most important winter diseases of turfgrass in the United States and Canada. Eight isolates of three snow mold fungal species (three isolates of Typhula ishikariensis, three of T. incarnata, and two of Microdochium nivale) were collected from infected turfgrasses on golf courses. The isolates were evaluated for their relative aggressiveness on three cultivars (L-93, Penncross, and Providence) of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris) under the same controlled conditions. Four plant ages (15, 19, 23 and 27 week-old plants from germination to inoculation) were evaluated for their susceptibility to the three pathogens and for the recovery of the plants. Regardless of age or cultivar of the host plant, M. nivale was found to be more aggressive and faster to infect and colonize than Typhula species. After three weeks recovery, M. nivale-inoculated plants showed higher disease severity than plants inoculated with the two Typhula species. Plants infected by Typhula species displayed no significant difference in disease severity. As creeping bentgrass plants get older, the severity of disease caused by three snow molds gradually decreases. This effect was observed in all cultivars tested, suggesting expression of age-related resistance as the bentgrass plants matured.

화본과식물에서 분리한 Curvularia spp.의 동정 (Identification of Curvularia spp. Isolated from Gramineous Plants in Korea)

  • 1998년 병든 화본과작물, 목초, 잔디 및 야생잡초의 잎점무늬와 마름병징으로부터 Curvularia spp. 16균주를 분리하였다. 이들 균주를 균학적 특징을 기초로 동정한 결과 C. cymbopogonis, C. inaequalis, C. intermedia, C. lunata, C. lunata var. aeria, C. ovoidea, C. pallescens C. senegalensis로 동정되었다. 이중에서 C. cymbopogonis, C. lunata var. aeria, C. ovoidea, C. senegalensis는 국내에서 처음 보고되는 미기록종들이다.

깎기주기, 통기작업, 시비수준 및 비료종류가 한국 잔디의 품질 및 생육에 미치는 영향 (Effect of mowing interval, aeration, and fertility level on the turf quality and growth of zoysiagrass( Zoysia japonica Steud.))

  • This study was conducted to provide basic understandings for proper management of zoysiagrass fairways. Mowing intervals of 2, 4 and 6-days, with and without aeration were compared at two fertility levels. Turfgrass quality, growth and pest infestation were evaluated. Turf density, number of tillers, leaf width and resiliency were significantly affected by mowing frequency. Turfgrass plots mowed every 2-day had greater density, tillering, and resiliency but had narrower leaf width compared to other mowing treatments. Clipping dry weight with every 2-day mowing increased in the early stage of mowing treatment regardless of fertilizer application rates but gradually decreased in the later stage of mowing treatment compared to every 4 or 6-day mowings. The dry weight of above-ground part was not affected by mowing frequency, but that of underground part was significantly higher for every 6-day mowing frequency(3.3kg/day/m2) compared to every 2 or 4-day mowings. The organic mater content in soil was not different among mowing treatments but it was significantly reduced by the core aerification treatment, indicating significant effect of core aerification on thatch decomposition. Occurrences of weeds such as annual bluegrass and crabgrass according to mowing frequency were greater in every 2-day mowing treatment, while plots mowed every 6 days had less weed occurrence. Occurrence of rusts significantly increased in high fertility plots and frequently mowed turfgrasses.

전기영동법 (SDS-PAGE, PAGIF)에 의한 잔디 분류에 관한 연구 (Studies on the Identification of Turfgrass by Electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE, PAGIF))

  • This experiment was executed to investigate the possibility of the application of taxonomic method through the isoelectric focusing with polyacrylamide gel and sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis with seeds in the identification of turfgrasses. The sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was used to investigate the pattern of seed proteins which were extracted from 18 cultivars of cool season turfgrass and 4 cultivars of warm season turfgrass. The isoelectric focusing with polyacrylarnide gel was used to investigate the activity of the three isozymes of esterase, peroxidase and phosphoglucose isomerase which were extracted from 18 cultivars of cool season turfgrass and 4 cultivars of warm season turfgrass. The results were summarized as follows. 1. The difference of the patterns of seed proteins was observed with sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The identification of intra-genus was easily detected. 2. The three isozymes of esterase, peroxidase and phosphoglucose isomerase were investigated through isoelectric focusing with polyacrylamide gel. As a result, esterase was most effective among three isozymes in the identification of turfgrass cultivars 3. In the past cultivar identification was primarily based on visual morphological characters, but there was a lot of difficulty. If we should use electrophoresis, we will be able to identifvturfgrass cultivars more effectively.

Effects of localised liquid fertilization of N, P, K and Ca on root development in Zoysia matrella, Cynodon dactylon and Stenotaphrum secundatum

  • Turfgrass species were evaluated for their rooting and foliar characteristics, and their interaction with the soil. The rooting system was divided into three compartments, one above another, such that the top and bottom compartments of the root system could be supplied with a nutrient deprived solution. Exposure of parts of the roots to nitrate deprivation caused a localised retardation of root initiation and extension, compared with zones receiving the full supply of nutrients. This resulted in considerable modification to root form, coupled with a significant depression in foliar growth. The extension of roots was the least affected by the deprivation of potassium. Phosphate and calcium deprivations gave rise to similar responses in root and foliar formation. Results from this study showed that external concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and calcium are required by the root system in varying amounts for optimal growth of roots. Turfgrass coverage and turf quality ratings further reinforced these findings. No significant difference was observed between the different grasses examined here. All three species responded similarly to the deprivation of the various nutrients. Results from this study confirmed that targeted fertilization programs are beneficial and can help reduce cost, chemical usage and prevent leachate and contamination.

  • Methiozolin (5-(2,6-difluoro-benzyloxymethyl)-5-methyl-3-(3-methyl- thiophen-2-yl)- 4,5-dihydro-isoxazole) is a new turf herbicide in isoxazoline chemistry. The herbicide controls grass weeds and has a high safety to various cool and warm season turfgrasses. This paper describes basic chemical, biological, and regulatory information of methiozolin.

Performance Assessment of Three Turfgrass Species, in Three Different Soil Types, and their Responses to Water Deficit in Reinforced Cells, Growing in the Urban Environment

  • Reinforcement cells are used to aid grass growth and taken together, this serves to extend greenery beyond the conventional spaces of lawns, tree pits, gardens, and parks, and is advantageous to urban cities since space for greening is often limited. Drought has variable effects on plant life and the resilience of turf to drought resistance also varies with species. Changes in photosynthetic ability were more pronounced for media rather than grass species. The media of sand without organic matter was found to be least suited for drought resistance. Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and digital image analysis (DIA) data were generally in favour of Zoysia species as oppose to A. compressus. In A. compressus, selective traits such as, a more extensive root system and lower specific leaf area (SLA) were not an underlying factor that assisted this grass with enhanced drought resistance. Generally, WUE was found to be strongly related to plant characterises such as overall biomass, photosynthetic features as well as the lushness indexes, and specific leaf area. This study found a strong relationship between WUE and a suite of plant characteristics. These traits should serve as useful selection criteria for species with the ability to resist water stress.
