Summer patch is the most serious disease at turfgrass field or golf course established with Kentucky bluegrass during high temperature season in Korea. Nevertheless, chemicals for the summer patch control are not yet registered in Korea. We isolated the pathogens from the turfgrass showing typical summer patch symptoms and identified as Magnaporthiopsis poae by using the internal transcribed spacer ITS1 and ITS4 sequences of rDNA. The inhibition rates of the pathogen were investigated for 10 fungicides. As results, the pathogen growth was suppressed when chemicals concentration increased and negatively correlated with incubation period with the chemicals. In triazole group, all chemicals (metconazole, myclobutanil, propiconazole and tebuconazole) treated showed the inhibition rates by 100%. Thiophanate-methyl showed the next highest inhibition effect against a summer patch pathogen. In strobilurin group, pyraclostrobin was the highest suppression effect compared with azoxystrobin and trifloxystrobin. Inhibition effect of fludioxonil and fluxapyroxad on pathogen was similar to the trifloxystrobin. Based on the results, triazole and carboxamide groups are strongly recommended due to the highest inhibition effect on the summer patch pathogen, Magnaporthiopsis poae.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of crumb rubber recycled from used tires as a soil incorporation and topdressing materials on a trafficked Korean lawngrass‘Zenith’(Zoysia japonica). In Exp 1, incorporation treatments included three particle sizes (PS: coarse =4∼6.35 mm, medium =2∼4 mm, and One : less than 2 mm in diameter) and two incorporation rate (IR: 10 and 20%). Wear treatments were applied 30 passes per day by compactor weights being 60 kg with soccer shoes. Topdressing treatments included three PS and two topdressing depth (TD: 5 and 10 mm). Wear treatments were the same as described in Exp 1. In Exp 1, the treatment with medium PS+IR 20 resulted in the tendency to have high total clipping yield. There was no significant difference in clipping yield, turfgrass visual color, coverage, and root length among the treatments. Compared to control, tissue Zn levels increased about 6.5-fold by the treatments. The treatment with fine PS +IR 20 caused a less peak deceleration than coarse PS +IR 10. Total porosity, air-filled porosity, and capillary porosity increased with fine PS +IR 20. In Exp 2, compared to controls, however, there was a difference in turfgrass visual color after the termination of traffic treatment. There was no difference in root length. The treatment with fine PS + TD 10 resulted in the highest total clipping yield. As a result of soil physical analysis, soil penetration resistance was reduced by the treatments. The treatment with coarse PS resulted in a less peak deceleration than fine PS. In conclusion, turfgrass growth was increased by crumb rubber incorporation which enhanced soil physical properties. The crumb rubber topdressing was able to cushion the crown tissue area while still providing a smooth and uniform surface, improve overall turfgrass quality, and reduce compaction.

Research was initiated to investigate turf performance under USGA soil system. USGA system 45 centimeters deep was built with rootzone layer, intermediate layer, and drainage layer. Six turfgrass entries were comprised of 3 blends and 3 mixtures from cool-season grasses (CSG). Turfgrass color and quality ratings were best in spring and fall, especially early May to early July and late August to early November. Kentucky bluegrass (KB) consistently produced the greatest performance, while perennial ryegrass (PR) the poorest. Intermediate turf performance between KB and PR was observed with tall fescue (TF). Among CSG mixtures it increased with KB but decreased with PR. There were considerable variations in summer turf Performance. No summer drought injury was found in KB and TF. However, PR showed poor performance through summer as compared with others. Among mixtures, it decreased with PR. It was suggested that PR mix in less than $20\%$ in the mixtures to have an acceptable quality in summer. Cultural intensity also affected it. With lowering mowing height, KB of rhizomatous-type in growth habit kept good quality, while PR and TF with bunch-type in growth habit poor quality. Mowing quality was greatly different among CSG. KB produced clean-cut surface, but PR unclean one. If had an intermediate mowing quality between KB and PR. A great difference in green color retention was observed among CSG. The longest CSG was PR that kept green for 339 days, while the shortest one TF for 267 days. KB continued to keep green for 290 days. The mixtures kept green in color for 292 to 315 days, depending on turfgrass mixing intensity. The greater the PR in content, the longer the green color duration. These results demonstrate that KB was the best and PR the worst among CSG grown in USGA system under a domestic climate, in regards of turf quality, color, mowing quality, summer turf performance and green color duration. KB and TF are most adequate for high-maintenance and low-maintenance area, respectively. In case of mixtures for high-quality turf, it was desirable to use KB-based mixture with PR of below $20\%$ in seeding rate.

This experiment was carried out in order to study the effect of organic fertilizer on the growth of Korean lawngrass (Zoysia matrella L. Merr.) and the change of soil chemical characteristics. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. Organic fertilizer was appropriate for base-dressing in the sod establishment of Korean lawngrass(Z. matrella L. Merr.) 2. Chlorophyll contents in mixed application plot of complex fertilizer(21-17-17) and organic fertilizer were more abundant than that in single application plot of organic fertilizer. 3. Application of organic fertilizer promotes the contents of available phosphorous in soil. 4. Dry weights of base-dressing and top-dressing plot had more weight about 40%, 12% than that of control plot, respectively. So base-dressing was more effective than top-dressing in the application of organic fertilizer.
The present study aimed to evaluate the phytotoxic potential of essential oils. For this purpose, 18 essential oil samples extracted from Korean plants and 64 commercial essential oils were screened for their phytotoxic potential against the seedling growth of Brassica napus L. (rapeseed). Among the 82 samples, 11 commercial oils (cinnamon, citronella, clove, cumin seed, geranium, jasmine, lemongrass, palmarosa, pimento, rose otto and spearmint) strongly inhibited the seedling growth with $GR_{50}$ value < $150{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$. Major components from these effective essential oils were identified by solid phase microextraction/gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPME/GC-MS). GC-MS analyses revealed that the effective samples mainly consist of benzyl benzoate, carvone, citral, citronellol, eugenol, geraniol, D-limonene and terpinene. Subsequently, bioactivity of these individual components was evaluated against the seedling growth of B. napus, Echinochloa crus-galli and Aeschynomene indica. The components from different chemical groups exhibited different potency in inhibiting the seedling growth with varied $GR_{50}$ values ranged from $29{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ to > $1000{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$. In the greenhouse experiment, citral and geraniol completely suppressed the growth of all the tested 10 plants at $100kg\;ha^{-1}$. In conclusion, the individual essential oil components geraniol and citral could be used as natural herbicides for weed management.
This study was carried out to induce and maintain callus from 59 zoysiagrass lines, to know the effective disinfestation method for zoysiagrass stolon as explant and the difference in the response of callus induction among 59 lines, and to investigate the effect of medium, growth regulators, light, temperature, stolon part and internode position on callus induction and emhryogenic callus(E.C.) formation. The treatment of 0.lmg/L $HgCl_2$for 15 min resulted in no contamination and the highest callus induction(46.6%). Callus was induced from the 59 zoysiagrass lines. The callus growth of Z. japonica and Z. sinica was generally better than Z. matrella Ten cell lines whose callus and stolon grow fast in culture and in field, respectively were selected to he used for breeding. Callus induction was the most effective at 2.0mg /L of both 2, 4-D and picloram in MS medium. MS medium was the best for callus induction and growth while LS medium was the best for embryogenic callus and shoot formation. Callus induction and growth was better at 28, 31$^{\circ}C$. than 25$^{\circ}C$. and dark condition was better than light condition in MS me-dium containing 2mg/L 2,4-D. While callus induction was better with node part as explant than with internode part, callus growth and embryogenic callus formation was better with internode part. In 'Japonica 1', the first internode was the most effective in callus induction, but third internode was the best in '$M_2$ X $S_2$'.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of compound fertilizer contained slow release nitrogen such as isobutylidene diurea(IBDU) and methylene urea(MU) on kentucky bluegrasss and the change of nitrogen in the root zone after supplying these at AM turfgrass research institute with soil analysis, chlorophyll content index, leaf area index and dry weight during 6 months from July to December in 2007 year. Fertilizer treatments were designed as following; non-fertilizer(NF), straight fertilizer(CF), methylene urea(MU), isobutylidene diurea(IBDU). The every treatments were arranged a randomized complete block with three replications. Results obtained were summarized as follows: As relative to time after N fertilizers application, ammonium and nitrate in soil were increased, but T-N was decrease. The change of ratio of available Nand T-N by elapsed time after fertilizing was decreased in CF from 30days but increased until 45days. Compared with NF, the turf color index in CF, MU and IBDU was increased 1.5%, 2.5% and 2.3%, respectively, the chlorophyll content 16%, 25% and 26%, the dry weight 31%, 62% and 46% and shoot number 104%, 185% and 148%. The chlorophyll content index of MU and IBDU was increased 7.5% and 8.8% than that of CF, shoot number 40% and 22%, and dry weight 24% and 12% but turf color index was similar to that of CF. These results showed that the MU and IBDU application was supplied nitrogen for a long time in root zone by increasing an available nitrogen, and so promote turf grass growth such as chlorophyll content and shoot number in kentucky bluegrass.

In order to investigate an artificially transition method of perennial ryegrass(Lolium perenne L. 'Accent') overseeded on zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonca Zenith') with Kerb (3,5-jichloro-N (1,1-dimethyl-2-propynyl). We observed turfgrass growth and physiological responses of the two turfgrasses under the shading treatments. The experiment was conducted in greenhouse during April- August. Shading was generally using a black shade net product whose the shade level was done into 0, 35 and 75%, actual light intensities were 589, 378 and $135\;{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s$ PAR, respectively. The four levels of Kerb treatment were 0, 0.1 0.2, and $0.4\;g{\cdot}m^{-2}$. As shading was getting increased, growth of perennial ryegrass was increased slowly, but zoysiagrass was reduced and almost all of experiments showed significant differences statistically. Perennial ryegrass exhibited inclination that growth was reduced in more than Kerb $0.4\;g{\cdot}m^{-2}$ by shades. On the other hand, it was shown that the growth of zoysigrass was reduced by shades largely and it was not effected by Kerb. Through this study, it was determined that Kerb is effective for elimination of overseeded perennial ryegrass on zoysiagrass. Moreover, when excluding perennial ryegrass under the condition like shade, it is desirable for treating high concentration more than the basic processing amount.
Tiller numbers per Unit area were increased as plant density heightened followed by little difference in tiller number in 110 days after transplanting(ll0DAT), this being caused by the immediate increment of tiller since' 90DAT During the growth period, the greatest number of green leaves per unit area was attained in 90DAT of both 160-density and 200-density plots, and in l00DAT of 40-, 80-, and I 20-density plots. Thus, the period to reach the maximum green leaf number with the high plant density was earlier than with the' low plant density. The increment of plant density increased the DM weight of ahoveground part and, with 40-densitytreatment. DNI weight was increased 6.1 times as much up to 110DAT as up to 7ODAT but 2 to 2.9 times with other ehe'nsity treatments. The' rate of increase in stolon length was greatest at the period between 80 and 90DAT when DM weight of stolon showed a large increment. Meanwhile, the average number of stolon was 1.7 at 70DAT but was increased up to 10 at 110DAT probably due to accelerative appeance of Ist stolon branch since 8.0DAT. DM weight of stolon was found to exceeded that of root after 90DAT Thus it was concluded that, when turfs is estahlished from sprig. it may be desirable for first mowing practice to be made at least within l00 days after planting.
