In order to investigate the relation between wall vorticity and streamwise velocity fluctuations in a turbulent boundary layer, a wall vorticity probe has been developed, which consists of two hot-wires on the wall aligned in V configuration. Although the measured intensity of spanwise wall vorticity fluctuations is somewhat lower than previous results, the intensity of streamwise wall vorticity fluctuations is in good agreement with them. It has been shown that the measured intensity of spanwise wall vorticity fluctuations is affected by transverse length of the wall vorticity probe. Instantaneous streamwise and spanwise wall vorticity fluctuations are compared with the results of DNS. Probability density function of spanwise wall vorticity fluctuations shows good agreement with previous results and is different from that of streamwise wall vorticity fluctuations. Energy spectrum of streamwisw wall vorticity fluctuations is lower than that of spanwise wall vorticity fluctuations in low frequency region.
A boundary-layer pump with a single disk has been experimented to obtain its characteristic curve by changing the impeller of a centrifugal pump to a single disk. The primary objective to use of these types of pumps is to avoid hurting water life during transportation unnecessarily. The change of impeller should degrade the performance of pump, so we used the method to increase the roughness on the disk with sandpaper and mesh. The enhancement of shear force from the rotation of disk to the internal flow brought an augmentation of momentum transport, and the characteristics were far improved from the original single-disk pump without decreasing the survival rate of water life in the case of Pseudobagrus fulvidraco (bullhead fish). However, in the case of Artemia cyst (zooplankton), the survival rate was very degraded due to the micro scale smaller than turbulent eddy size. The result of this study could be used for the design of transportation and bio-filtering of water lying on a specific bandwidth of its scale of size.

An experimental study is carried out to investigate the near-wake characteristics of a NACA 0018 foil with a flat plate. Two-frame grey-level cross correlation PIV method is used to measure the local flow characteristic around a pitch damping foil to control the vertical motion of high speed crafts in a circulating water channel. The analysis also includes angles of attack 10 and 20 degrees respectively. Reynolds number $Re{\fallingdotseq}3.5{\times}10^4$ based on the chord length(C=100mm) of NACA0018 has been applied during the whole experiments. The distance between the foil and the flat plate is D/C=0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 respectively. The channel effect according as the distance between the foil and the flat plate has a close relation with the velocity distributions around the foil. In the wake of 20-degree of attack, the complex turbulent flow and a thick boundary layer are formed due to the processes of vortex generation and dissipation.

CFD calculations are performed for KRISO 3600TEU container ship(KCS) models with different Reynolds numbers. Numerical calculations of the turbulent flows with the free surface around KCS have been carried out at $Re=0.791{\times}106\;and\;Re=1.4{\times}107$ using a standard Fluent package. In both cases, Froude number is fixed with 0.26 and wave elevation is simulated by using the VOF method. The calculated results at $Re=1.4{\times}107\;and\;Re=0.791{\times}106$ are compared with the experiment data of KRISO towing tank test and RIMS CWC test, respectively. Boundary layer thickness and wake field shows Reynolds number differences. There are some changes in wave pattern behind transom stern.

Skin frictional drag reduction efficiency of "stiff" compliant coating was investigated in a wind tunnel experiment. Flat plate compliant coating inserts were installed in a wind tunnel and the measurements of skin frictional drag and velocity field were carried out. The compliant coatings with varying viscoelastic properties had been prepared using different composition. In order to optimize the coating thickness, the most important design parameter, the dynamic viscoelastic properties had been determined experimentally. The aging of the materials (variation of their properties) during half a year was documented as well. A design procedure proposed by Kulik et al. (2008) was applied to get an optimal value for the coating thickness. Along with the drag measurement using the strain balance, velocity and pressure were measured for different coatings. The compliant coatings with the thickness h = 7mm achieved 4~5% drag reduction within a velocity range 30~40 m/s. The drag reduction mechanism of the attenuation of turbulence velocity fluctuations due to the compliant coating was demonstrated. It is envisioned that larger drag reduction effect is obtainable at higher flow velocities for high speed trains and subsonic aircrafts.
Vertical profiles of mean and fluctuating wind velocities over water waves were studied, by performing Large-Eddy Simulations (LES) on a fully developed turbulent boundary layer over simplified water waves. The water waves were simplified to two-dimensional, periodic and non-evolving. Different wave steepness defined by $a/{\lambda}$ (a : wave amplitude; ${\lambda}$ : wavelength) and wave age defined by $c/U_b$ (c: phase velocity of the wave; $U_b$ : bulk velocity of the air) were considered, in order to elaborate the characteristics of mean and fluctuating wind profiles. Results shows that, compared to a static wave, a moving wave plays a lesser aerodynamic role as roughness as it moves downstream slower or a little faster than air, and plays more aerodynamic roles when it moves downstream much faster than air or moves in the opposite direction to air. The changes of gradient height, power law index, roughness length and friction velocity with wave age and wave amplitude are presented, which shed light on the wind characteristics over real sea surfaces for wind engineering applications.

Local heat transfer characteristics for a round air jet impinging normally on a heated flat plate were experimentally investigated. The problem parameters investigated were jet Reynolds number, Re=4000,10000, and 20000, and nozzle-to-plate spacing(L/D) of 2,6, and 10. The temperature variations on the flat uniform heat flux surface were mapped using a thermo-sensitive liquid crytal sheet. The isochromatic images corresponding to the characteristic temperature of liquid crystal were analyzed with the help of a digital image processing system. The local Nusselt number, Nu decreased rapidly in the impingement region and exhibited a similar profiles in the wall jet region independent of the nozzle-to-plate spacing L/D. In the case of large Reynolds number, heat transfer rate (Nu) was proportional to 0.5 power of the Reynolds number. For L/D=2, a secondary peak in the heat transfer rate was seen in the region of X/D=1.5~3 due to the transition from laminar to turbulent boundary layer.
This is the first of two companion papers that analyse ten years of on-site monitoring data for the Confederation Bridge to determine the validity of the original wind speeds and wind loads predicted in 1994 when the bridge was being designed. The check of the original design values is warranted because the design wind speed at the middle of Northumberland Strait was derived from data collected at shore-based weather stations, and the design wind loads were based on tests of section and full-aeroelastic models in the wind tunnel. This first paper uses wind, tilt, and acceleration monitoring data to determine the static and dynamic responses of the bridge, which are then used in the second paper to derive the static and dynamic wind loads. It is shown that the design ten-minute mean wind speed with a 100-year return period is 1.5% less than the 1994 design value, and that the bridge has been subjected to this design event once on November 7, 2001. The dynamic characteristics of the instrumented spans of the bridge including frequencies, mode shapes and damping are in good agreement with published values reported by others. The on-site monitoring data show bridge response to be that of turbulent buffeting which is consistent with the response predicted at the design stage.

In this study, the numerical investigation of the flow around the SUBOFF submarine model is performed by using the Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) method which is developed based on the SST k-ω turbulence model. At the DES analysis level, complex vortical flows around the submarine model are caused mainly by the vortices due to the appendages and their interactions with the flows from the hull boundary layer and other appendages. The complexity and scale of the vortical flow obtained from the numerical simulations are highly dependent on the grid. The computed local flow properties of the submarine model are compared with the available experimental data showing a good agreement. The DES analysis more reasonably estimates the physical phenomena inherent in the experimental result in a low radius of the propeller plane where vortical flows smaller than the RANS scale are dominant.

A numerical procedure for determining the airfoil shape that maximizes the lift is presented. The structure of the flow field is calculated by iteratively coupling potential flow and boundary analysis using the viscous-inviscid interaction method. The potential flow field is obtained by the vortex panel method and boundary layer flow is analyzed by means of integral approximation method which is capable of handling the laminar, transition and turbulent flow regimes. As the result of this study, it is found that the calculated flow regimes have good agreement with the existing experimented data. Davidon-Fletcher-Powell method and Augmented Lagrange Multiplier method are used for the optimal techniques. NACA 23012, NACA 65-3-21, NACA 64-2-415, NACA 64-2-A215 airfoils are used for determining the optimal airfoil shapes as a basic and compensate airfoils. Optimal design showed that the lift coefficients are increased by 17.4% at M$_{0}$=0.2 and 29% at M$_{0}$=0.3, compared with those of basic airfoil.oil.
