Several factors of the efficient combustion process are shape of combustion chamber, position of spark plug, turbulence flow and so on. the shape of combustion chamber and position of spark plug are constrained to geometrically, and then it could not make a change the shape easily. But the turlence flow in combustion chamber have a great influence on combustion phenomena, and which is much easier to control relatively. And since characteristics of turbulence flow would be very important to the stability of combustion and performances, This study is also essential to future engine-low emission and lean burn engine. This paper shows that the visualization of the turbulence flow of single cylinder engine by using 2way, $45^{\circ}$ inclined and 2 channel hot wire probe through the park plug hole. We also study the characteristics of turbulence flow by means of ensemble averaged mean velocity, turvulence intensity and integral length scale.
This analysis is aimed to find out how the conditions of secondary air injection affects the residence time and the turbulence energy of flue gas and flow field in a small incinerator. A commercial code, PHOENICS, is used to simulate the flow field of an Incinerator. The computational grid system is constructed in a cartesian coordinate system In this numerical experiment, an independent numerical variable is the conditions of secondary air injection and dependants are the residence time of flue gas and the mean value of turbulence energy in a primary combustion chamber. The flow field and the distribution of turbulence energy are analysed to evaluate the residence time of flue gas and the turbulence energy The computational results say that the tangential injection of secondary air make the residence time much longer than the radial injection and that the radial injection of secondary make turbulence much stronger than the tangential injection.
To understand the effects of turbulence on combustion, it was experimentally investigated in the combustion chamber with sub-chamber by using pressure record and high speed Schlieren motion picture. The results show that turbulence can increase the flame propagating rate and there exists a condition under which the total burning time becomes the minimum. And it was also found that there exist three kinds of flame propagating pattern and the total burning time can be reduced with the appropriate selection of sub-chamber size and orifice diameter.
The change of flue gas residence time with the location of air inlet in an incinerator is analysed. An independent numerical variable is the location of air inlet and dependant is the residence time of flue gas. The mean value of turbulence energy in a primary combustion chamber is also analysed. The flow field and the distribution of turbulence energy are investigated to evaluate their influence on the residence time of flue gas and the turbulence energy. As the position of secondary air inlet approaches to the top of primary combustion chamber, the residence time of gas and the turbulence energy become longer and larger respectively.
In this study, we calculated arc discharges and flow characteristics driven by arcs in a thermal puffer chamber, which is one of most outstanding high-voltage interrupters, for understanding the complex physics and the probability of thermal breakdown. The four main parts of arc model for this virtual-reality are radiation, PTFE ablation, Cu evaporation, and turbulence. Among these important parts the turbulence model can be critical to the reliability of computation results during the whole arcing history because the plasma flow is affected by high heat energy and mass momentum. Two turbulence models, the Prandtl's mixing length model and the standard $k-\varepsilon$ model, are applied for these calculations and are compared with pressure-rise inside chamber and arc voltage between the contacts as well as flow characteristics near current zero.
The present study developed a new technique with no physical object on the flow stream but enabling the air flow measurement and easily incorporated with the devices for cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR) procedure. A turbulence chamber was formed in the middle of the respiratory tube by locally enlarging the cross-sectional area where the flow related turbulence was generated inducing energy loss which was in turn converted into pressure difference. The turbulence chamber was simply an empty enlarged air space, thus no physical object existed on the flow stream, but still the flow rate could be evaluated. Computer simulation demonstrated stable turbulence formation big enough to measure. Experiment was followed on the proto-type transducer, the results of which were within ${\pm}5%$ error compared to the simulation data. Both inspiratory and expiratory flows were obtained with symmetric measurement characteristics. Quadratic curve fitting provided excellent calibration formula with a correlation coefficient>0.999(P<0.0001) and the mean relative error<1%. The present results can be usefully applied to accurately monitor the air flow rate during CPR.
Jet pumps are used in a great number of engineering applications. In the present study, jet shapes, mixing chamber shapes, and numerical methods for predicting the performance of an annular-type jet pump are investigated to determine the optimal turbulence model. The flow fields are simulated by solving the momentum and the continuity equations with the standard ${\kappa}-{\epsilon}$ and the RNG ${\kappa}-{\epsilon}$ turbulence models at different Reynolds numbers. After that, they are compared with the corresponding experimental data to determine the optimal model. Next, various calculations are conducted to find an optimal shape using the selected turbulence model. The study shows us that the RNG ${\kappa}-{\epsilon}$ model predicts the performance more exactly, and also shows that the most effective performance can be achieved with $12^{\circ}$ reducing angle and 130mm throat length.
Turbulence intensity caused by piston movement was almost as same tendency as the piston speed. The turbulence intensity was increased from 0.39m/s to 0.79m/s when mean piston speed increased from 2.33m/s to 4.67m/s. In this case the maximum turbulence intensity caused by piston speed was decreased about 82 percent near the top dead center at the end of compression stroke. The maximum turbulence intensity was created from 12m/s to 22m/s when inlet flow velocity was increased from 22m/s to 45m/s. Also turbulence intensity caused by inlet flow velocity was linearly increased from 0.97m/s at top dead center at the end of compression stroke. The ratio of turbulence intensity and mean inlet flow velocity was about 3 percent for inlet flow velocity.
Particle image velocimetry(PIV), a planar measuring technique, is an efficient tool for studying the complicated flow field such as in-cylinder flow, and intake port flow. PIV can be also used for analyzing the integral length scale of turbulence, which is a measure of the size of the large eddies that contain most of the turbulence kinetic energy. In this study, dual color scanning PIV was designed and demonstrated by using a rotating mirror and a beam splitter. This PIV system allowed enlargement of flexibility in the intensity of vectors to be calculated by spatial filtering technique, even in combustion chamber with high velocity gradient and high vorticity$({\sim}1000s^{-1})$. A new color image processing algorithm was developed, which was used to find the direction of particle movement directly from the digital image. These measuring techniques were successfully applied to obtaining the turbulence intensity (~0.1m/s) and the turbulent integral length scale of vorticity(~1mm).
