  • This paper is analyzed the electrical characteristics of the round solid rotor of turbo-generator without damper cage influence the induction generation modes and the torsional interaction modes of the SSR phenomena, and then examines the problem of representing electrical characteristics which is dependent on frequency and different wedge materials. The basic model of turbo-generator used in the field analysis is viewed as 5-regions of different permeability and conductivity characteristics. The analytical method, which is used in this paper is based on solving a boundary value problem involving 3-D fields, and the basic function consists of the 2-D Fourier series.

  • This paper presented to design a robust turbo-generator control system using {{{{ { H}_{$\infty$ } }}}} control synthesis for improving small-signal stability. Application study of{{{{ { H}_{$\infty$ } }}}} control synthesis is more appropriate in this system since a turbo-generator system is usually operated under circumstance of unmeasurable modelling uncertainty and external disturbance. The{{{{ { H}_{$\infty$ } }}}} control theory was briefly reviewed for good understanding and the reasonable approach. The design results are simulated for a case study and to check the system performance in comparison with currently operating Lead/Lag filtered PSS performance.

  • This paper presented to design the power system stabilizer(PSS) for a turbo-generator system using LQG/LTR control synthesis for improving small-signal stability.   • Axi-periodic analysis using magnetic vector potential is formulated in time harmonic field and applied to the field analysis for the end region of large turbo generator in this paper. By using axi-periodic analysis, the effect of flux shield, one of the structure placed in the end region of large turbo generator to prevent stator end from thermal damage, is studied, and eddy current loss in the flux shield is estimated for operation conditions. 3D FEA is used for the verification of presented analysis method. Because 3D flux distribution can be calculated with 2D modeling, magnetic field showing 3D distribution can be effectively calculated by axi-periodic analysis comparing with 3D FEA.

  • A Sub-kWe small-scale experimental test loop was manufactured to investigate characteristics of the supercritical carbon dioxide power cycle. A high-speed turbo-generator was also designed and manufactured. The designed rotational speed of this turbo-generator was 200,000 rpm. Because of the low expansion ratio through the turbine and low mass flowrate, the rotational speed of the turbo-generator was high. Therefore, it was difficult to select the rotating parts and design the turbine wheel, axial force balance and rotor dynamics in the lab-scale experimental test loop. Using only one channel of the nozzle, the partial admission method was adapted to reduce the rotational speed of the rotor. This was the world's first approach to the supercritical carbon dioxide turbo-generator. A cold-run test using nitrogen gas under an atmospheric condition was conducted to observe the effect of the partial admission nozzle on the rotor dynamics. The vibration level of the rotor was obtained using a gap sensor, and the results showed that the effect of the partial admission nozzle on the rotor dynamics was allowable.

United Electromagnetic Characteristics and Online Monitoring Method of Static Air-gap Eccentricity of Turbo-Generator

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the united Electromagnetic characteristics for the effective monitoring on the static air-gap eccentricity (SAGE) of turbo-generator. Different from other studies, this paper not only studies on the unbalanced magnetic pull (UMP) and the vibration characteristics of the stator and the rotor, but also investigates the harmonic features of the magnetic flux density and the circulating current inside the parallel branches (CCPB). The theoretical calculation, together with the finite-element-method (FEM) simulation and the experiment verification, is taken for a SDF-9 type non-salient generator. It is shown that, when SAGE occurs, apparent double-frequency UMP and vibrations will be produced both on the stator and the rotor, while the CCPB will have an obvious increment at the $1^{st}$ harmonic component. In addition, the amplitude of the magnetic flux density will be of cosine distribution in the circumferential position of the air-gap, while in normal condition it is a constant. Moreover, the pass-band amplitude, together with the $1^{st}$ harmonic of the magnetic flux density, will be enlarged as well. These united electromagnetic characteristics can be used as the diagnosis and monitoring criterion for SAGE.

Effect of a Turbo-Expander for Regeneration in the Expansion Process (팽창과정에서의 터보엑스펜더 영향에 관한 연구)

  • A turbo-expander is developed for the regeneration in the expansion process. The turbo-expander operates in the partial admission and supersonic flow, and an axial-type single stage turbine is applied to the turbo-expander. Its outer diameter is 82mm and the operating gas is R134a. A 15kW reciprocating compressor is applied in this experiment and the turbo-expander is installed in the expansion process instead of the commonly using expansion valve. Two supersonic nozzles are applied for the expansion process. The high speed of R 134a after passing the supersonic nozzles gives the impulse force to the turbo-expander and some powers are generated on this process. A generator is installed at the end of the turbo-expander shaft. The generating output power from the turbo-expander is controlled by the power controller. Pressures and temperatures are measured on the lines for the performance investigation. More than 600W/(kg/sec) are generated in this experiment.

  • As fuel cell system is environmental friendly generator, its performance depends on its air supply system. Because, fuel cell stack generates electrical energy by electron and the electron is generated by reacting between air and hydrogen. So, more and more compressed air is supplied, more and more the energy can be obtained. In this study, turbo-expander supported by air foil bearing is introduced as the air supply system used by fuel cell systems. The turbo-expander is a turbo machine which operates at high speed, so air foil bearings suit its purpose for the bearing elements. Analysis for confirming the stability and endurance is conducted. Based on FDM and Newton-Raphson method, characteristics of air foil bearing, dynamic coefficients, pressure field and load capacity, are obtained. Using the characteristics of air foil bearing, the rotordynamic analysis is performed by finite element method. The analysis (stability analysis and critical speed map) shows that turbo-expander is stability at running speed. After the analysis, the test process and results are presented. The goals of test are running up to 90,000 RPM, flow rate of 150 $m^3/h$ and pressure ratio of 1.15. The test results show that the aerodynamic performance and stability of turbo-expander are satisfied to the primary goals.
