스프링요소를 이용한 풍력발전기용 슬루잉 베어링의 유한요소해석 (Finite Element Analysis of Slewing Bearings for Wind Turbines Using Spring Elements)

  • 본 연구는 풍력발전기용 베어링의 응력저감을 위한 설계와 검증에 관한 것이다. 일반적인 4점 접촉 볼베어링의 구조를 가지고 있는 슬루잉 베어링은 큰 모멘트 하중이 작용하면 접촉점이 레이스웨이 끝단부로 이동하여 국부적인 응력상승 문제가 발생한다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 접점 이동을 줄이기 위한 베어링을 설계하였다. 전통적인 볼베어링과 새로인 설계된 베어링의 극한하중 하에서의 변형거동을 볼을 스프링요소로 치환하여 유한요소해석을 통하여 계산하였다. 볼과 레이스웨이의 접촉응력은 변형거동 해석결과를 경계조건으로 입력하여 유한요소해석으로 계산하였다. 베어링 구조에 따른 접촉부 응력 비교를 통하여 베어링의 응력해석 방법의 효용성을 검증하였다.

  • This study evaluates the structural safety of wind turbine blades, analyzes the behavior of composite laminate structures with and without defects, and assesses surface erosion wear. The NREL 5 MW standard is applied to assign accurate composite material properties to each blade section. Modeling and analysis of the wind turbine blades reveal stable behavior under individual load conditions (gravity, motor speed, wind speed), with the web bearing most of the load. Surface erosion wear analysis in which microparticle impacts are simulated on the blade coating shows a maximum stress and maximum displacement of 14 MPa and 0.02 mm, respectively, indicating good initial durability, but suggest potential long-term performance issues due to cumulative effects. The study examines defect effects on composite laminate structures to compare the stress distribution, strain, and stiffness characteristics between normal and cracked states. Although normal conditions exhibit stable behavior, crack defects lead to fiber breakage, high-stress concentration in the vulnerable resin layer, and decreased rigidity. This demonstrates that local defects can compromise the safety of the entire structure. The study utilizes finite element analysis to simulate various load scenarios and defect conditions. Results show that even minor defects can significantly alter stress distributions and potentially lead to catastrophic failure if left unaddressed. These findings provide valuable insights for wind turbine blade safety evaluations, surface protection strategies, and composite structure health management. The methodology and results can inform the design improvements, maintenance strategies, and defect detection techniques of the wind energy industry.

Hydrodynamic Design of Thrust Ring Pump for Large Hydro Turbine Generator Units

  • Thrust-ring-pump is a kind of extreme-low specific speed centrifugal pump with special structure as numerous restrictions from thrust bearing and operation conditions of hydro-generator units. Because the oil circulatory and cooling system with thrust-ring-pump has a lot of advantages in maintenance and compactness in structure, it has widely been used in large and medium-sized hydro-generator units. Since the diameter and the speed of the thrust ring is limited by the generator set, the matching relationship between the flow passage inside the thrust ring (equivalent to impeller) and oil bath (equivalent to volute) has great influence on hydrodynamic performance of thrust-ring-pump. On another hand, the head and flow rate are varying with the operation conditions of hydro-generator units and the oil circulatory and cooling system. As so far, the empirical calculation method is employed during the actual engineering design, in order to guarantee the operating performance of the oil circulatory and cooling system with thrust-ring-pump at different conditions, a collaborative hydrodynamic design and optimization is purposed in this paper. Firstly, the head and flow rate at different conditions are decided by 1D flow numerical simulation of the oil circulatory and cooling system. Secondly, the flow passages of thrust-ring-pump are empirically designed under the restrictions of diameter and the speed of the thrust ring according to the head and flow rate from the simulation. Thirdly, the flow passage geometry matching optimization between thrust ring and oil bath is implemented by means of 3D flow simulation and performance prediction. Then, the pumps and the oil circulatory and cooling system are collaborative hydrodynamic optimized with predicted head-flow rate curve and the efficiency-flow rate curve of thrust-ring-pump. The presented methodology has been adopted by DFEM in design process of thrust-ring-pump and it shown can effectively improve the performance of whole system.

표면이 마모된 틸팅 패드 저널베어링의 열윤활 해석 및 온도 측정 (Thermohydrodynamic Analysis and Pad Temperature Measurement of Tilting Pad Journal Bearing with Worn Pad)

  • With the increase in adoption of tilting pad journal bearings (TPJBs), various failure mechanisms related to TPJBs have been reported, of which pad wear is a frequently reported one. Pad wear causes change in geometry of the bearing, which can sometimes result in the failure of the entire system. The objective of this research is to investigate the influence of pad wear on the pad temperature, which is one of the widely used condition monitoring methods for TPJBs. For the theoretical investigation, thermohydrodynamic (THD) analysis was conducted by solving the generalized Reynolds equation and the 3D energy equation. The results of the analysis show that the temperature of the loaded pad increases while that of the unloaded pad decreases, when there is wear on the loaded pads. In addition, the minimum film thickness decreases with an increase in the wear depth. A validation test was conducted with a test rig, which mimics the axial turbine when a test rotor is supported by two TPJBs. The test bearing consists of five pads with a diameter of 60 mm, and a resistance temperature detector (RTD) is installed in the pad for temperature monitoring. The test was performed by replacing the two loaded pads with the worn pad. The test result for the TPJB with wear depth of $30{\mu}m$ show that the temperatures of the loaded pads are $8^{\circ}C$ higher and that of the unloaded pad is $2.5^{\circ}C$ lower than that of the normal TPJB. In addition, the predicted pad temperature shows good agreement with the measured pad temperatures.

수력발전소 가이드 베인 저개도율 운전에 따른 가이드 베인 베어링 부슁의 마모 가속효과 평가 (Evaluation of Effect of Low Opening Operation on Increasing Wear of Bearing Bushings of Guide Vanes used in Hydropower Plants)

  • 가이드 베인은 수력발전소 수차에 공급되는 물량을 제어하는 핵심적인 역할을 수행한다. 가이드 베인 베어링 부슁에 발생하는 마모와 관련하여 많은 정비 사례들이 보고되고 있다. 수력발전소의 중요기능인 주파수 조정, 급전 등과 같은 부수적 서비스는 가이드 베인을 작게 열고 운전하는 저개도율 운전을 반복적으로 수행하게 한다. 이러한 저개도율 운전은 가이드 베인 베어링 부슁의 마모율을 증가시키는 것으로 경험적으로 알려져 있다. 본 연구에서는 수력발전소의 가이드 베인 저개도율 운전이 가이드 베인 베어링 부슁의 마모를 가속시키는 효과를 유한요소 유동/응력 해석 및 상대적인 마모 평가를 통해 정량적으로 평가한다. 평가 결과, 가이드 베인 개도율이 작을수록 가이드 베인면에 작용하는 압력이 증가하고 가이드 베인 스템 외면과 베어링 부슁 내면 사이의 접촉길이는 감소하였으며 베어링 부슁 표면에 작용하는 접촉압력이 크게 발생하여 상대적으로 마모량이 증가함을 확인하였다.

  • A rotor system is composed of a rotating shaft with supporting bearings. The rotor system is widely used in every rotating machinery such as the turbine generator and the high precision machine tools. A negligible error or malfunction in the rotor, however, can cause a catastrophic failure in the system then result in the environmental and economic disasters. A diagnosis of the rotor system is important in preventing these kinds of failures and disasters. Up to now, many researchers have devoted in the development of diagnosing tools for the system. The basic principles behind the tools are to retrieve the data through the sensors for a specific state of the system and then to identify the specific state through the heuristic methods such as neural network, fuzzy logic, and decision matrix. The proper usage of the heuristic methods will enhance the performance of the diagnostic procedure when together used with the statistical signal processing. In this paper, the methodologies in using the above 3 heuristic methods for the diagnostics of the rotor system are established and also tested and validated for the data retrieved from the rolling element bearing and journal bearing supported system.

  • Modern high-performance automotive turbochargers (TCs) implement ceramic hybrid angular contact ball bearings in series with squeeze film dampers (SFDs) to enhance transient responses, thereby reducing the overall emission levels. The current study predicts the rotordynamic responses of the commercial automotive TCs (compressor wheel diameter = ~53 mm, turbine wheel diameter = ~43 mm, and shaft diameter at the bearing locations = ~7 mm) supported on ball bearings and SFDs for various design parameters of SFDs, including radial clearance, axial length, lubricant viscosity, and rotor imbalance conditions (i.e., amplitudes and phase angles) while increasing rotor speed up to 150 krpm. This study validates the predictive rotor finite element model against measurements of mass, polar and transverse moments of inertia, and free-free mode natural frequencies and mode shapes. A nonlinear rotordynamic model integrates nonlinear force coefficients of SFDs to calculate the transient responses of the TC rotor-bearing system. The predicted results show that SFD radial clearances, as well as phase angles of rotor imbalances, have the paramount effect on the dynamic responses of TC shaft motions.

마찰접촉조건에 따른 소수력 수차용 밀봉장치의 마찰.마멸특성 연구 (A Study on the Friction and Wear Characteristics of Contact Sealing Units for a Small Hydro-power Turbine Under Various Rubbing Conditions)

  • In this paper, the friction and wear characteristics of contact type sealing unit far a water turbine have been presented. The sealing unit for a small hydropower generation is to stop a leakage of circulating water from an outside of an impeller to an inside of a rolling bearing. The friction heating between a seal ring and a seal seat may radically increase a surface temperature in which increase a power loss and wear on the rubbing surface. The surface wear strongly affect to the seal life of a mechanical face seal. In this study, the hardness of a stainless steel in which is a heat-treated is 892.8 in Victors hardness and the hardness of silicone carbide of SiC is 714.1 in Victors hardness. The surface hardness of a heat-treated stainless steel is 25% high compared with that of a ceramic material of SiC. The contact modes of rubbing surfaces are a dry friction, a water film friction and a mixed friction that is contaminated by a dust, silt, and moistures, etc. These two factors of a contact rubbing modes and a material property are very important parameters on the tribological performance such as a friction and wear between a seal ring and a seal seat in primary sealing unit. The experimental result shows that the surface hardness of a seal material is very important on the friction coefficient and a wear volume. Thus, the results recommend higher hardness of a seal material, which may reduce a friction loss and increase a wear life of primary seal components.

5MW급 풍력발전기용 기어박스 하우징의 형상 최적설계 (Optimum Shape Design of Gearbox Housing for 5MW Wind Turbines)

  • 5MW급 풍력발전용 기어박스의 효율적인 구조해석과 근사모델을 생성하여 경량화를 위한 형상 최적설계를 수행하였다. 풍력발전용 기어박스의 구조는 기어 트레인, 축, 베어링, 하우징과 같이 복잡한 구성요소로 이루어져 있어 구조해석에 많은 요소 수를 요구하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 헬리컬 기어의 치강성 계수를 고려한 효과적인 기어박스의 구조해석 모델을 생성하였다. 치강성 계수를 사용한 유성 기어열은 상대적으로 적은 요소 수와 해석시간으로도 전체 기어박스 시스템의 구조해석과 형상 최적화를 가능케 한다. 치강성을 이용한 단순화된 해석모델과 근사모델을 적용하여 하우징 무게에 영향이 큰 부위의 두께를 설계변수로 설정하여 케이스 최적설계안을 도출하였으며, 최적설계를 위해 사용된 근사모델의 신뢰성과 최적 기어박스 하우징 형상의 수치해석을 통해 타당성을 검증하였다.

초음파 수침법을 이용한 터빈베어링 Babbitt금속 박리 검사 기술 (Implementation of Ultrasonic Immersion Technique for Babbitt Metal Debonding in Turbine Bearing)

  • 이 연구는 터빈베어링의 신뢰성을 평가하기 위하여 초음파 C-Scan 방법을 적용한 기술이다. 수침법에 관한 연구는 실험실과 현장검사 적용에 광범위하게 사용되는 기술이다. 여기에서는 C-Scan 방법을 이용하여 베어링의 모재와 Babbitt 금속간 경계부의 상태를 평가하였다. 수침법 C-Scan 방법에 의한 초음파 영상은 베어링 경계부의 상태를 확인하는데 효과적인 방법으로 사용될 수 있었다. 초음파 영상의 분해능을 높이기 위하여 집속형 탐촉자를 사용하고, Babbitt 금속과 베어링 모재간의 접합경계면에서 발생하는 초음파 음압 반사율을 측정하여 결함의 검출과 면적을 추정할 수 있었다. 초음파 수침법은 베어링 접합부의 박리위치와 박리면적의 경계면을 결정하여 크기를 계산하는데 아주 유용하게 사용될 수 있는 기술이며, 이 연구에서 개발된 기술은 화력발전소에서 사용되고 있는 터빈베어링의 건전성을 확보하는데 적용되었다.
