This research explored the feasibility of preparing and utilizing a preformed polymeric solution of Al(III) for coagulation in water treatment. Slow base(NaOH) injection into supersaturated aluminum chloride solutions did produce high yields of the type of Al polymers useful to water treatment applications. PACl's characteristic analysis showed that the quantity of polymeric Al produced at value of $r(OH_{added}/Al)=2.2$ was 83% of the total aluminum in solution, as showing maximum contents and precipitate was dramatically increased when r was increased above 2.35. And PACl was stable during sitoring period so aging effect was negligible. Results of the coagulation of Nakdong river waters with three PACls showed that the effectiveness of the three coagulants can be considered as r = 2.2 > r = 2.0 > r = 2.35 which are also the order of higher polymeric aluminum contents. Coagulation results for synthetic water exhibited optimum dose of 0.25mM Al, for three PACls, but above optimum dose, r = 2.0 and 2.2 PACl impaired the coagulation and sedimentation of turbidity and humic acid because of the restabilization of particulate. The effect of pH for on coagulation of Nak Dong River water showed that it had much effect turbidity and TOC removal, especially near pH 7. But pH effect was little for turbidity and TOC removal when r = 2.35 PACl was used for coagulation, that PACl had much more precipitates content.

Integrated process with coagulation and microfiltration as an advanced water treatment has been expanded its application in recent years due to its superb removal of particles and natural organic matter. In usual, effectiveness of coagulation sometimes determines performance of the whole system. Several new polymeric coagulants introduced to water utilities for better efficiency were studied in this paper. Three polymeric coagulants (i.e., PACl, PACs, and PAHCs) along with alum were evaluated for removal of natural organic matter, especially for reduction of trihalomethane formation potential, for which regulation has become stringent. Turbidity removal was closely related to pH variation showing the reduced turbidity removal by PACs due to the decreases in the pH of supernants at high doses. The four coagulants showed different organic matter removal during coagulation and affected the removal in microfiltration. For instance, DOC concentration was not reduced by microfiltration when PAHCs were used however 10 % of DOC removal was observed by microfiltration with alum coagulation. Coagulation pretreatment also impacted the THM removals, i.e., approximately 30 % of THMs and 13 % of DOC was removed by microfiltration only, but 40 to 67 % of THMs and 30 % of DOC was removed by the integrated process. Strategies on selection of coagulants are needed depending on characteristics of target pollutants in raw waters.
In this study, efficiency of pre-treatment of turbid seawater was measured where micro-air bubbles were used to remove particles in seawater after input of natural coagulant PGA. Artificial seawater was prepared having the intended trubidity using marine sediments and microalgae. 73.7% of turbidity removal was achieved when 0.5g/L of $AlCl_3{\cdot}6H_2O$ was added in the artificial seawater, but 92.4% of turbidity removal was observed when 0.05g/L of PGA was added in the artificial seawater containing microalgae. In addition, much greater turbidity removal was achieved for microalage than sediments. For both cases, input of 0.1g/L PGA and following additional input of micro-air bubbles for 5 seconds resulted in the maximum removal efficiency where reaction time of coagulation was 1 min and flotation by micro-air bubbles was 10 min. From this study, we concluded that micro-air floation after coagulation could be a possible economical pre-treatment method for highly turbid seawater.
In order to treat the complex wastewater containing organic compound and solids, pre-treatment system associated with molecular separation process were investigated. The reductions of COD and turbidity were obtained after coagulation processes using Alum (Aluminium sulfate, $Al_2(SO_4)_2{\cdot}18H_{2}O$) and PACl (poly aluminium chloride as 17% $Al_{2}O_{3}$). The results of study were as follows: using variable dosage of Alum, COD removal was highest at 4,000 mg/l, and the reduction of COD and turbidity was 42% and 92%, respectively. The optimum coagulation would be effective at pH 7.3 than pH 9.0 by the addition of alum at a concentration of 6,000 mg/l and PACl was add at 4.25% in raw complex wastewater with 2,000 mg/l alum at pH 7.3, the reduction of COD was reduced by 32%. But coagulation aid experiments indicated that PACl would be more effective in sludge separation ability than COD removal efficiency.

One of the most widely used static mixers is Sulzer type mixer. However the structure of the element is so complicated that the mixing efficiency is better than others, whereas the pressure drop is larger than the others. Therefore new elements are necessary to reduce the pressure drop and to minimize the decrease of the mixing efficiency compared with the Sulzer ones. The objectives of this study are to develop new static mixer and to perform the experimental investigation in order to evaluate the performance of the new one, and to investigate the applicability of the one in an inline coagulant mixing system for water treatment, The pressure drops of the new static mixer elements were about 4-12% lower than that of the Sulzer SMX one, and the mixing efficiency of the Sulzer SMX one was about 2-5% higher than that of the new ones. The inline coagulant mixing system with a new static mixer element performed significantly better than the traditional mechanical mixing system for turbidity removal.
This study was performed to determine the optimum coagulant dosing amount for effective treatment of raw water. The removal rate of turbidity and the variations of water qualities according to various dosage of coagulants such as Alum, PAC and PACS were investigated. The optimum coagulant dosing amount to make the lowest turbidity of water were 35mg/ι t of Alum, 30mg/ι of PAC and 10mg/ι of PACS in case of 5 NTU of raw water turbidity, and 30mg/ι of Alum, 25mg/ι of PAC and 10mg/ι of PACS in case of 10 NTU of that, respectively. The removal rates of turbidity at 4 min. and 8 min. of settling time were 10 and 72% of Alum, 44 and 62% of PAC and 25 and 55% of PACS in case of 5 NTU, and 52 and 70% of Alum, 90 and 95% of PAC and 10 and 28% of PACS in case of 10 NTU, respectively. Judging from the settling capability of floc., the reaction time of floe. formation and removal efficiency of turbidity, PAC was evaluated as more effective coagulant than Alum and PACS. Also PAC was regarded as the most effective coagulant when the water supply was changed sharply and the fluctuation of the surface loading occured with wide and sharp in settling basin. pH and alkalinity of the water were decreased with increasing coagulants dosage. But pH and alkalinity were not decreased below 5.8 which is the standard for drinking water quality, and 10mg/ι which is the limit concentration of floc. breakage, respectively. Residual Al of the treated water was decreased with increasing coagulants dosage in case of 5 and 10NTU of raw water turbidity. $KMnO_4$ consumption of the water was decreased with increasing coagulants dosage. The reduction rate of $KMnO_4$ consumption at the optimum coagulants dosage were 39% of Alum. 18% of PAC and 11% of PACS in case of 5 NTU of raw water turbidity, and 42% of Alum, 27% of PAC and 36% of PACS in case of 10 NTU of that, respectively. Any relationship was not found between the removal rate of turbidity and KMnO$_4$ consumption. TOC of the water was a bit decreased with increasing coagulants dosage up to 30mg/ι but not changed above 30mg/ι of coagulants dosage. The degree of TOC reduction was increased in the order of Alum, PAC and PACS treatment. Zeta potential of the colloidal floe. at the optimum coagulants dosage was in the range of -20~-15mV in case of 5 NTU of raw water turbidity and 0~0.5mV in case of 10 NTU of that. respectively. Although the kinds and dosages of coagulants were different, zeta potential range were fixed under the conditions of the best coagulation efficiency.
Effect of the air distributor pore size for the removal of aquacultural waste, such as protein, total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), turbidity and total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) from sea water was investigated by using foam separator. With the increase of pore size of air distributor, removal rates and efficiency of protein decreased. Removal rate by commercial air stone was in the range between the removal rates by G2 and G4 sintered glass discs. Within the range of pore size distributor from Gl to G4, the removal efficiency of protein were ranged from 21 to $42\%.$ The changes of removal rates and efficiencies of TSS, COD and turbidity were similar to proteins. TAN was removed by stripping. The pore size of air distributor for a higher overall oxygen mass transfer coefficient and saturation efficiency provided the condition for higher protein removal rate. Also the foam separator could be used as an aerator.
The purpose of this research was to investigate the efficiency of coagulants dose after backwashing. The turbidity of initial effluent was high after backwashing in the rapid sand filtration and the high turbidity was almost removed by coagulants dose into filter-sand after backwashing. It was found that the turbidity of initial effluent was well removed by all kinds of the coagulants used in this study. When filtration was performed input water with differentiated pH's, the turbidity of effluent was low at the range of pH 5 - pH 7. But the removal was not good about over pH 9. This result was considered into the existence forms of aluminium, $Al(OH)^{2+}\;and\;{Al(OH)_2}^+$ at pH 5. Cryptosporidiums of effluent were 4/ml for ten minutes immediately after back washing and 3/ml until sixty minutes. However, the case of coagulant dose after backwashing, Cryptosporidiums of effluent were 0.5/ml for ten minutes with no detection after twenty minutes.
Experimental investigations on the removal of protein, total suspended solids and turbidity from aquacultural water were carried out by using three types of foam separator: counter current air driven type foam separator (CCADFS), high speed aeration type foam separator (HSAFS) and venturi type foam separator (VFS). The decrease of flow rate by CCADFS, HSAFS and VFS were $0.4,\;66.1,\;77.2 {\%}$ respectively. Protein removal rates by three types foam separator were decreased with the increased hydraulic residence time (HRT). Bellw 0.32 minute and 0.21 minute of hydraulic residence times, protein removal rate of HSAFS and YES was higher than that of CCADFS, respectively. Protein removal rate of VFS was lower than that of HSAFS at any HRT. As increasing the HRT, protein removal efficiency of CCADFS was increased, but that of HSAFS and VES were decreased. The changes of removal rates and efficiencies of total suspended solid and turbidity were similar to proteins.

Sawdust is considered one of the cheapest and abundantly available adsorbents, and it is not necessary to regenerate. The spent sawdust can be incinerated or reused as a fuel. The sawdust adsorption can be applied to the removal of color and metal cations from the wastewater. The aim of this study was to evaluate the adsorptive capacities of sawdust with respect to color, COD, SS, turbidity, metal cation from textile wastewater. Langmuir, Freundlich, BET and Sips adsorption isotherm were obtained for the sawdust adsorption of Fe(III). The effects of particle size and amount of sawdust on the adsorption of Fe(III) were also studied. COD, SS, color, turbidity and Fe(III) removal efficiencies were examined at the continuous fixed-bed adsorption test. It was showed the removal efficiencies of SS 50.0%, Fe(III) 25.0%, turbidity 79.4%, color 48.6% and COD 50.9%. In addition, the changes of surface structure between before and after adsorption were investigated through SEM analysis. It is confirmed that the waste sawdust can be successfully used as an adsorbent for wastewater treatment.
