  • This numerical study was intended to evaluate the applicability of the half charge blasting to mining and tunnelling. The half charge blasting is a method that two separate rounds are sequentially blasted for the rock burdens in which long blast holes have already been drilled at one operation. The aim of the method is to decrease the construction cost and period in mining and tunnelling projects as well as to increase the blasting efficiency. Several numerical analyses were conducted by using the Euler-Lagrange solver on ANSYS AUTODYN to identify the effects of the suggested method on the blasting results in underground excavations. The overall performance of the suggested method was also compared to an ordinary blasting method. The analysis model was comprised of the Eulerian parts (explosive, air, and stemming materials) and the Lagrangian parts (rock material). As a result, it was found that, owing to the air decks formed in the bottom parts of the long blast holes, the first round of the suggested method presented a higher shock pressure and particle velocities in the vicinity of the blast holes compared to the ordinary blasting method.

  • Most of deep learning model training was proceeded by supervised learning, which is to train labeling data composed by inputs and corresponding outputs. Labeling data was directly generated manually, so labeling accuracy of data is relatively high. However, it requires heavy efforts in securing data because of cost and time. Additionally, the main goal of supervised learning is to improve detection performance for 'True Positive' data but not to reduce occurrence of 'False Positive' data. In this paper, the occurrence of unpredictable 'False Positive' appears by trained modes with labeling data and 'True Positive' data in monitoring of deep learning-based CCTV accident detection system, which is under operation at a tunnel monitoring center. Those types of 'False Positive' to 'fire' or 'person' objects were frequently taking place for lights of working vehicle, reflecting sunlight at tunnel entrance, long black feature which occurs to the part of lane or car, etc. To solve this problem, a deep learning model was developed by simultaneously training the 'False Positive' data generated in the field and the labeling data. As a result, in comparison with the model that was trained only by the existing labeling data, the re-inference performance with respect to the labeling data was improved. In addition, re-inference of the 'False Positive' data shows that the number of 'False Positive' for the persons were more reduced in case of training model including many 'False Positive' data. By training of the 'False Positive' data, the capability of field application of the deep learning model was improved automatically.

  • This study deals with shotcrete reinforcing performance according to the amount of synthetic fiber (PP fiber) and proper evaluation method. The shotcrete compressive strength, flexural strength and flexural toughness were tested by setting the mixing amounts of steel fiber ($37.0kg/m^3$) and synthetic fiber (PP fiber) as parameters ($5.0kg/m^3$, $7.0kg/m^3$ and $9.0kg/m^3$). Particularly, circular panel flexural toughness test (Road and Traffic Authority, RTA) was performed to evaluate the shotcrete energy absorption capacity. As a result, the compressive strength and the bending strength of the steel fiber reinforced shotcrete were large, but the flexural toughness of the synthetic fibe (PP fiber) reinforced shotcrete was large. Therefore, synthetic fiber (PP fiber) reinforced shotcrete is considered to have a reinforcing effect comparable to that of steel fiber reinforced shotcrete. Analysis of the relationship between the flexural toughness and the energy absorption capacity of synthetic fiber (PP fiber) reinforced shotcrete revealed that the energy absorbing ability is exhibited at a flexural toughness lower than the allowable standard (3.0 MPa). (Class A: 2.55 MPa = 202J, Class B: 2.72 MPa = 282J, Class C: 3.07 MPa = 403J). As a result of this study, it can be concluded that the actual shotcrete support performance can be evaluated by evaluating the support performance of the shotcrete measured at less than the allowable standard (3.0 MPa) at the actual tunnel site.

  • This paper presents a method to predict ground types ahead of a tunnel face utilizing operational data of the earth pressure-balanced (EPB) shield tunnel boring machine (TBM) when running through soil ground. The time series analysis model which was applicable to predict the mixed ground composed of soils and rocks was modified to be applicable to soil tunnels. Using the modified model, the feasibility on the choice of the soil conditioning materials dependent upon soil types was studied. To do this, a self-organizing map (SOM) clustering was performed. Firstly, it was confirmed that the ground types should be classified based on the percentage of 35% passing through the #200 sieve. Then, the possibility of predicting the ground types by employing the modified model, in which the TBM operational data were analyzed, was studied. The efficacy of the modified model is demonstrated by its 98% accuracy in predicting ground types ten rings ahead of the tunnel face. Especially, the average prediction accuracy was approximately 93% in areas where ground type variations occur.

  • For the construction of a large underground space with a complex plant installed, it is necessary to analyze the stability considering the ground conditions and various load conditions. In this paper, finite element analysis was performed to analyze the support load that can be used in the design of a large underground space for high-density arrangement of complex plant. An analysis of underground continuous wall (D-wall) was performed considering the load and horizontal earth pressure in the large underground space. In addition, foundation ground analysis was carried out according to the load condition of the complex plant. In order to shorten the construction period, increase the space layout utilization, and secure the stability of the plant structure when installing the complex plant underground, the pipe rack module structure analysis was conducted. This study proposes a design and construction method for the optimal arrangement of underground complex plants using the analysis results.

  • In general, segment lining tunnel refers to a tunnel formed by connecting precast concrete segments as a ring and connecting such rings to each other in the longitudinal direction of the tunnel. As the structural properties of the segment lining is highly dependent on the behavior of the segment joints, thus correct modelling of joint behavior is crucial to understand and design the segment tunnel lining. When the tunnel is subjected to ground loads, the segment joint behaves like a hinge that resists rotation, and when the induced moment exceeds a certain limit of the rotation then it may enter into non-linear field. In understanding the effect of the segment joint on the lining behavior, a moment-rotation relationship of the segment joint was explored based on the Japanese practice and Janssen's approach commonly used in the actual design. This study also presents a method to determine the rotational stiffness of joint refer to the bearing strength. The rotation of the segment joint was estimated in virtual design conditions based on the existing models and the proposed method. And the sectional force of the segment lining and joint were calculated along with the estimated rotation. As the rotation at the segment joint increases, the joint contact area decreases, so the designer have to verify the segment joint for bearing strength as well. This paper suggests a consistent method to determine the rotational stiffness and bearing strength of joints.

  • Railway projects have been consistently increasing in Korea. In relation to this trend, the mechanized tunneling using Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) is preferably applied for mining urban areas and passing under rivers. The TBM tunneling under difficult grounds like mixed faces with high water pressure could require ground improvements for stable TBM advance or safe cutter head intervention (CHI). In this study, pre-grouting works for CHI in Daegok-Sosa railway project are presented in terms of the grouting zone design, the executions and the results, the lessons learned from the experience. It should be mentioned that the grouting from inside TBM was carried out several times and turned out to be inefficient in the project. Therefore, grouting experiences from the surface are highlighted in this study. Jet grouting was implemented on CHI points on land, while permeation grouting off shore in the Han River, which mostly allow to access the cutter head of TBM in free air with stable faces. The results of CHI works have been analyzed and the lesson learned are suggested.

  • With the high quality/high stiffness/high strength of segment lining, segment lining is increasingly used as the final lining of the tunnel. Precast concrete lining has higher quality and strength than field concrete. Paradoxically, this contributes to greater damage to concrete in the event of a fire in a tunnel. In this study, tests were conducted to determine the fire resistance performance of segment linings according to fiber content in fire resistance methods using synthetic fibers such as PP fibers. As a result, it was confirmed that fire resistance performance required by the relevant project can be secured when using 1.5 kg/m3 of PP fiber. In addition, comparison of the results of PP fibers with PET, a similar synthetic fiber, showed better fire resistance performance than when PP fibers were used.

  • Duct slabs, which are used to build ventilation facilities in underground spaces with transverse ventilation system, need to secure fire resistance according to longitudinal and heavy vehicle traffic of tunnels. This study measured the temperature change at the construction joint of the precast fireproof duct slab which integrates fire resistance material and duct slab under the RWS fire scenario. As a result, it was confirmed that if there is no reinforcement of the construction joint, damage will occur in concrete inside the construction joint, leading to damage to the fireproofing layer. On the other hand, when one side of the construction joint was reinforced with fireproofing materials, it showed more than three times the fire resistance performance compared to when there was no reinforcement. At this time, cross-sectional losses of concrete and fireproofing layer were shown in blocks without reinforcement, but no damage was seen in the reinforced blocks.

  • New type of rock excavation method using a waterjet system is being developed to secure economic feasibility and to reduce vibrations during excavation. In waterjet rock excavation, overlapping of cutting width is essential for high efficiency. In this study, cutting experiments for granite specimens were performed using abrasive waterjet system according to the overlapping ratio and standoff distance. Based on the experimental results, the granite cutting performance was analyzed according to the overlapping ratio. In addition, removal shapes of the cross-section were analyzed in terms of the cutting depth, width, and volume after waterjet cutting. When the overlapping ratio is less than 58%, rock specimens are partially removed due to the insufficient overlapping ratio. However, when the overlapping ratio exceeds 67%, overcutting phenomenon is observed. For the partial overlapping ratio (i.e., 25~75%), cutting efficiency is increased in the removal volume. This study is expected to be used as the important basic data for determining the optimum overlapping ratio when the waterjet system is applied for rock excavation.
